Anyone know which game it was? If it's an away one, what was our last abandoned game at Villa Park?
I can't remember ever having attended an abandoned game. The only one I can think of in the last forty years is the infamous Rangers friendly but I was thinking more of matches abandoned due to horrendous weather rather than horrendous fans.
-
The one in the late 90's when there were rumours of a protest against Ellis and although the pitch was clear, the surroundings were too dangerous apparently. I think Angel was signed by the next week.
-
That was postponed, not abandoned. Leicester I think.
-
Blackburn semi-final in 2010 was postponed wasn't it?
-
Yes, so was Wigan away. But I want abandoned not postponed!
-
The last game to be abandoned was against Middlesbrough away in season 1968/69.
-
Sorry, I misread the original post. There have been a few that should have but none in my lifetime I believe. The last home ones I remember must have been either Man Citeh at home during the season of the new Witton when the sleet was sideways and I thought the roof was going to be blown out in the new stand it was flexing so much. And obviously I thought the infamous Santa match should have been abandoned after it happened at half time but then I thought the man was dead.
-
I cannot remember any abandoned game for Villa apart from the infamous Rangers friendly.
I was at a Torquay v Mansfield game, would have been about 12/13 years ago . It started getting very very foggy, the Torquay keeper was venturing out his area and reporting back to us standing behind the goal what was going on at the other end. Eventually the referee abandoned the game and we were able to go round the ticket office and get a refund if we didn't think we would get to the rearranged fixture. I had paid for 1 adult and 2 kids, but they refunded me for 3 adults ! Of course, half an hour after abandonment the fog lifted and you could see all the pitch clearly.

Cheers Lee, what was the score and how long was gone?

I want to know that too. All i know is the completed fixture was played 4/3/69 in front of 29,824. 0-0 draw.

That's all I can find aswell.

If a game is ever abandoned at Villa Park, what happens as regards tickets for the rearranged fixture ?
I was quite surprised when I just looked at the official site.
http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/CustomerCharter
Free admission if you are admitted to the ground and game is abandoned before kick-off. (Obviously)
But half price admission to the rearranged fixture if the game has actually kicked off !
-
At home to Livepool this season...abandoned by our players!

The Division 1 fixture between Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa played on Saturday November 26th 1898 was abandoned after 79 minutes due to bad light. Sheffield Wednesday were 3-1 up at the time. Uniquely, rather than let the score stand or order the whole match to be replayed, the League decreed that the two clubs should resume the match at Sheffield and play only the final 11 minutes. This they did nearly four months later on Monday March 13th 1899 when Sheffield Wednesday added one more goal to make the final score 4-1. By the time the match was resumed both clubs had changed their line-ups - Billy Garraty of Aston Villa, and Samuel Bosworth, Bob Ferrier, Ambrose Langley, Jack Pryce and Fred Richards (who scored the final goal) of Wednesday all played in only the final 11 minutes. Surely these players were the first substitutes used in a League match!

I know it wasn't abandoned but wasn't there a game against Racist FC that was called off so late that the coaches with their fans on were arriving at VP when it was announced? About 10 years ago?
-
As far as I can tell, the last home game abandoned was 15/03/1947 versus Stoke City.

The last game to be abandoned was against Middlesbrough away in season 1968/69.
I remember a game round about 64/65 away to the Baggies I stood at the front of the Birmingham Rd end and got absolutely
drenched. As I remember it we were 2-0 up (both from Phil Woosnam) when the ref called it off.

If you've got the season right we lost the re-staged game three-one. Jammy Olbiyun swines.
EDIT: seen other post. It was 65-66 then in which case we drew the eventual game 2-2.
EXTRA EDIT: just looked at the post properly and realised you've already put the scoreline on. Must pay attention.

Man City in the cup last season. Abandoned by Houllier.

Christmas 1995; it was abandoned so late that we'd started selling.

Wasn't that an away match at Manure - I had just parked up at an NCP on Matt Busby Way when I was informed.
I was pissed off but not as pissed off at people behind me who had travelled to see them from Yeovil. Never was I so tempted to laugh in someone's face.

That was 1991. The late home one was definitely 1995. We also had the next Saturday called off then played Gravesend & Northfleet away at Villa Park the following week.

yes I remember now, 20 years ago. Frightening. I had travelled up in a B Reg Orion.

We went to Newton Heath in fancy dress in '91 and only found out when we were on the M56. No mobile phones in those days so we flagged down the other car and I ran along the hard shoulder to tell the lads. Dressed as a nun.
It was only later that we discovered that the game had been called off while we were in the fancy dress shop in Hall Green.
-
did we have a match against sheff utd abandoned because of a frozen pitch,it may have been a friendly tho.im sure peter withe got carried off when he fell over and hurt his back.

Also, wasn't it 1989 when we got all the way to Loftus Road only to find the match was off? That's what you get for playing music in the car instead of listening to the radio. At least we weren't dressed as nuns on that occasion.

It was. We found our halfway down the M1 with a passing car holding an A4 sheet with 'Game Off'.
The benefits of having the scarfs out the windows.

Even better being on a coach that decided to carry on to covent garden. the return was somewhat messy :D

I was at that Albion v Villa match in 65-66 when it was abandoned .I can remember it rained all day and the pitch was like a bog. I also remember the long walk back to the city centre with the rest of the villa fans and being drenched by the time we reached New street. A few weeks later i also remember a home game against West Ham,which i thought was also abandoned after around 30 minutes but my memory is not what it was so maybe it was postponed. Can anyone remember that?

A Calcio Catania V AS Roma match this season was abandoned due to heavy rain recently and the last (21 I think) minutes were finished about 2 1/2 weeks later. It finished 1-1 by the way.
