Title: Is it wrong.....
Post by: Rick_avfc on January 27, 2012, 10:29:18 AM
....for home fans to bring their mate(s), who support the opposition team, to a game at villa park ?  For example, if you had a mate who was a QPR fan, would you bring them to the game to sit with you and the home fans?

As long as they shut up yes, I took my mate who is a liverpool fan to sit in with the home fans and we won and I made him sing and jumpred all over him when Taylor scored the winner :)

It would depend on who the opposition is TBH. QPR would be easier than Blues or Man Utd.

I work with someone who is a Manchester City fan and as he doesn't live up there anymore, was asking if it would be ok to come to the game with his boy who is 13.  I said it shouldnt be a prob as long as he doesn't stand up and start celebrating should City score to which he replied, he wouldn't dare incase he got the sh*t kicked out of him!

I took my Man Utd supporting cousin a few seasons ago, he got pissed, thrown out, arrested then when he came out of the police station he was run over by a car.

Moral of the story? Don't support Manchester United.

I'd never do it those seasons we were getting packed houses. I'd have thought I was depriving a villa fan of the chance to go see us play. Now though, things are different. I'd probably chance it as it'd be better to have a mate there  quietly supporting the opposition (not shouting, singing or celebrating) than having a plastic seat. I once brought two neutrals to villa park with me. It was a dreadfully inept 1-0 home loss to Sunderland that did nothing to convert them...

I've had opposition supporting mates with me at Villa Park and also sat in the home end at Anfield with Liverpool supporting friends.  I see no problem with it as long as you're respectful and not a twat about it.

It goes both ways,I took my Liverpool supporting friend when Gerrard scored in the last minute,my mate didn't flinch when it went in,last year I sat with my West Ham supporting brother in their end when Gabby scored in the last minute, and I behaved myself.

As long as they don't act like a tool, theres no problem.

It's great having fans of both sides sitting together. My favourite game of the season is always Fulham away. My brother and his wife are Fulham fans me and mine are Villa. It's a shame everywhere isn't like it. The only time i have taken a non Villa supporting mate to VP and sat with home fans was a Wimbledon mate, the game we won 5-0 or 5-1, he took it in good humour.

To be honest, I can't see the point in bringing them if they can't cheer or celebrate their team. If they took the piss, though, I'd thump them myself.
If it was the other way round I'd want to cheer or celebrate if Villa scored.
I sit in the Lower Trinity and some morons were having a go at the disabled away supporters!

I took my mate to the Portsmouth game a couple of years ago and he got chucked out. I never did find out the reason why...

Ive sat in a few 'home' ends and if you behave and keep quiet its fine. I even did it for the cup game last season when that ' lanky streak of piss Zigic' got the winner. Still dont know why I had 200 Lulus running after me down Garrison Lane!

Nervously stood on the Trent End terraces in 93 (1-0 McGrath header) but then it became apparant there were hundreds of Villa fans in there so it was fine. Celebrated the goal as if it was the away end (well maybe not quite) and had a great view of the away support celebrating at the other end.

I often bring friends to VP and watch a good many away games with them in the home end.  Even get away with mild celebrations most of the time too.  Was up at Anfield a couple of years ago when we won 3-1 with my wife's cousin in his corporate seats in the centenary stand and went quite mad when we scored and they were fine!  It's all about being sensible and showing respect I think.

A few of us went in corporate at Liverpool when they were rebuilding the Annie Rd End as no away tickets were sold. Kept ourselves to ourselves, with no colours on, but they were twats in there.
Sat among home fans at West Ham in the mid 80s. The steward had sussed us out but we managed to survive. I hate sitting with the opposition and would only do it if no other option.
Safe enough at Villa Park, depending where you sit. If the away fan celebrates a goal, he will get turned on.

Agree with that - most areas of most grounds are okay and VP is no different, as long as you are sensible. Ive done it myself (Anfield, Selhurst) and cheered when we scored but apart from that kept it low key, no problem.

My brother's mate from work was with us at the Arsenal game this season, but he didn't make any curfuffle, so it was fine.

I would feel a bit dirty if the friend was a Manure fan I think.

I was in the Wolves end last Saturday, first time I'd ever done it. Kept quiet after all 3 goals. I was probably more noticable when getting frustrated at our inept attempts to kill the game off in the 8 mins of injury time. I was sat with a friend of my Dad's. I consider away fans in home end ok if they're with a home fan and show respect. I've had Liverpool and Leeds fans in with me at Villa before now and, strangely, an Everton fan in the away end at Goodison.

Completely agree with this though. Beyond the pale.

Stood on the Anfield Kop in the early 90s with my glory hunting Liverpool supporting cousins. I think it was Kevin Richardson who put us one up, and without realising I'd done it I said "Yes" and clenched my fist. The scouser next to me sussed me but was fine. However two of my mates were stood a bit further back and one of them was spat on by a loveable scouser, so I suppose it just depends on who you're stood/sat next to.

Depends on the area of the ground. If I were to bring anyone, it would be in the trinity rather than, say, the holte.

It is all about respect.  I've done it loads, both having mates sitting with me in the Villa end and sitting with them in whatever end of the sh1t team they support.  It's fine as long as you or your mate don't act like an idiot.

I was with a Liverpool fan for that game as well. I was a kid and got offered 3 tickets last minute, I needed someone to take me so asked my mate so his dad could take us.

My weirdest experience of being in with home fans was at Fratton park where I was with Pompey fans with just a rope dividing me from Villa. So it felt i was with Villa but wasn't. I was pretty respectful although bloke next to me did realise & gave me a sly dig as he left after we won.

We did that on boxing day about 98ish when Oakes got sent off, had no problems and it turned out the guys sitting directly in front of us were Villa fans too.

I went on the Chicken Run at West Ham quite a few years ago and though respectful and quiet, the guy next to me accused me of being a Villa fan - I said yes, how do you know - he said you can be as quiet as you like but your body language tells all.  All went well, we had some good hearted, respecful banter.

Sadly, I've had more trouble with some of our own away support.

It would not bother most people, and some good banter can be had with the odd away fan in the home end, never quite understood the vitriol of the odd few who you'd think had just watched their family die in front of them so are so mad that an away fan has snuck in.

I went to the cup game at Old Trafford with my mate in O'Neill's first season, didn't have any trouble.  It was fairly obvious that I was a Villa fan as I sat in stony silence when they scored, but I didn't go mad when Baros scored either.  It's all about being respectful and not doing anything daft.

True.  Ive got tickets for the North stand upper so shouldnt be too bad especially as he has a young lad.  I said to him for a laugh that we will sit in the Holte end and he questioned why and I said because thats where all the died hard fans sit.  He then said no as he would get battered and I said "thats the point!" lol

No it's not wrong but I must know.

Watched from the home end away to Man City in the mid 90s. Almost caused myself a mischief trying to suppress my laughter at Keith Curle's pathetic penalty miss. Tried to look enthusiastic at their late winner.

My first trip to VP as a Villa fan (if you asked me who I supported as an eight-year-old, I'd have said "Liverpool"- I'm not proud of this, but it can be attributed to coming from a town without a league club of its own, and not actually being very interested in football, so I would say I supported the most successful team of the age. My Dad managed to get tickets for Villa v Liverpool in the late 80s, (2-2 draw, they scored in the first minute and that's all I can remember) hence I was supporting the opposition the first time I attended VP! Anyone else got a story like this?) was in 1995 when we were played off the park by West Ham, 0-2. My friends and I were in the upper Witton Lane and it was pretty obvious we were surrounded by West Ham fans. No intervention from the stewards that I noticed, and it was particularly sickening to have to listen to them singing "I'm forever blowing bubbles" as they played us off the park. Luckily, I kept the faith...

Since then, I've attended games against Forest, Spurs and Bolton at home with friends supporting those teams without any aggro, and I've gone undercover at Old Trafford, although I was surrounded by tourists so it pobably wouldn't have made any difference if I'd celebrated our goal then. It's not an issue as long as the fan in the wrong stand shows some respect.

I've taken a Blues fan (I did wash the seat afterwards don't worry) to non-Blues games before, and even with him taking the piss out of us and me trying to out him as a Bluenose no one took a second glance.

Though that was in the very upper reaches of the Trinity against Blackpool last year.

I took my old man to the FA cup match against Utd - the one when they kept going on the pitch from the Witton lane. He's been loads of times with me before in the Holte to watch Villa, so knew to keep shtum if they scored. He couldn't help himself though when the 3rd went in and had to surpress a reactive half cheer. This caught the attention of some idiots behind us who started having a go. I had to make it known I was Villa and he was with me. Don't think he even said another word after that!

I took my son the the semi-final away leg with my Rovers supporting father in law. My son, who was 11 at the time jumped up when Milner scored and he got a load of grief from a 50 year old bald fool who told him to 'f**k off' and then went and told the stewards who thankfully did sod all!

done it loads of times blues and leeds being the worst. Got sussed by other chelmsley blues lads in the kop and had to leave, then was with my dads mate at leeds in their end 80/81. He weren't a trouble maker but didn't give a shit  and went ballistic when we scored!, as u can imagine in the leeds end what happened next. Good old days.

I did it at Leeds once and by some amazing coincidence ended up sitting right in front of the only Leeds fan I knew at the Army base I was at. We went 1-0 up (Saunders) and he spent the rest of the game threatening to dob me in, then Leeds equalised so I was saved!
He wouldn't have done it (I don't think) but there were some scary blokes in there. We both ended up amazingly drunk in Wakefield afterwards.
