But how the hell can you be 50 today! Makes me feel very old.
If only he hadn't had those injuries. I've always wondered what kind of career he would have had.
-
51 even! Mick Martin on TodayFM commentary just mentioned that he bumped into him doing media duty before the game.
-
Doh! eamonn is indeed correct and he's 51 today.
-
He only looked 12 when he was playing ;D
When you think we've lost some flippin' good players to injury, Gary being 1 plus Brian Little and Keith Leonard another 2 that spring to mind.
-
Gosh, just older than me. Used to love it when him and Geddis played up front as always thought they looked dead cool together...all those blonde flowing locks used to look particularly nice against our all white away strip...
-
My boy-hood hero.
-
Brian and Gary were my first 2 Villa heroes. I started wondering if I was a jinx.
-
Villa legend even if he hasn't accepted my friend request on facebook
-
Saw him in the pub today before the game. Villa legend.
-
My mate's sister really fancied him when I was a lad.
-
My boy-hood hero.
Ditto..what a player he could have been.

Same here, he has a EC and Championship medal which is something, but the most natural finisher in a Villa shirt i have seen, sublime touch
-
Happy birthday, Gary, you boyhood hero of mine you!
-
-
Happy Birthday Mr.Shaw.

Oooh listen to you .................. Chichester close to Brighton is it?

I was just about to post that. How very dare you get there first -:)
-
Many Happy returns to the great man,the reason for me having to endure so much joy and despair the past 30 odd years.

It's Gok to you Clive! I did used to quite fancy them both in a you know, manly sort of way...
Brighton just down the road, as you know very well
-
Same bday as am then
-
My mate's sister really fancied him when I was a lad.
Unfortunately my sister didn't when he tried to chat her up in Bel Air (30 years ago). Still haven't forgiven her.

Congratulated him when we all saw him in the pub. He was hoping for a Villa win as a birthday present
-
When I was 15 i played against Gary Shaw at Jaffray Playing Fields, Erdington. (School match) I was a makeshift Centre Back that day. I didn't have a bad game but a blond headed forward scored three times -you didn't even know he was playing.
It wasn't until after the game they told me he was on Villa's books. Bastards.
-
Thanks for posting that video, great birthday present for Mr Shaw from the current team today, happy birthday Gary!
-
Happy birthday Gary!
-
My first ever footballing hero.
Happy Birthday Gary.

Glad he got it. Glad Alex got it for his birthday as well.
-
When he gets the ball he's bound to score!
Gary, Gary Shaw!
Happy times!
Happy Birthday Mr Shaw!
-
My boy-hood hero.
Snap. I always wanted to be Gary Shaw in the back garden football games with my bothers.
-
Gary must love bein a legend bet he never has to buy a beer
-
A belated happy birthday Gary was one of my heroes too.
-
Belated greetings Gary. Once one of my heroes and now a good friend.
The only problem is, he has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of our club and almost every time we meet he will have a question for me about some really obscure part of the clubs history. Needless to say I've never got an answer right!
-
Happy 51st gary, my boyhood hero, the one of two i always pretended to be in the playground(the other beind Zico) and the man i wrote to jim'll fix it to play football with! true legend in my eyes.
-
I am also in the 'boyhood hero' club,
even had my hair cut in the same style as him, although obviously I was always better looking
-
I went out with a girl once, not because I particularly fancied her, but because she was a neighbour of gary Shaw and I wanted her to get me his autograph.
-
Belated Happy Birthday Gary, Villa legend :)
-
I think Mr Shaw can be genuinely filed under the title legend.
Happy Birthday Gary and thanks for some of the best memories of being a Villa fan over the past fifty years.
-
Indeed Gary is a legend. Unfortunately our great club seem to have forgotten this! Gary has never been given a testimonial by the club! Brian Little did, Sid Cowans did but not Gary. That injury, against Forest virtually finished him. The club have done nothing for him since. He's one of our own....Villa through and through and unlike some of the Championship/European Cup team did not peddle his talent at Small Heath.
I personally feel deep sorrow that one of our greatest players has been treated this way. Only hope H & V can put some pressure on the club to right this wrong!!!!!
-
He was a boyhood hero of mine from when he was about 8 years old - even at that age people were predicting a bright future for him.
Steffo: I think I was at that game. Was it a final?
-
Gary Shaw should be a Club Ambassador.
-
My generation, only 6 weeks younger than me. A very good striker andI often think he would have gone on to great things, the genuine superstar that our youth system never quite produced (with all due respect to the likes of Little and Sid). Possibly not with Villa though, we weren't fashionable enough even when we won the league and EC.
-
my lad who never saw him play asked me what modern player could he be compared to, i said Dennis Bergkamp, but its not really right is it,
so who would it be ?
-
A more skillful version of Sheringham maybe? Thinking about it, it is quite hard to say who he was like, especially as I was young at the time so wasn't massively into the finer aspects of the game.
-
Hernandez?
-
Messi?
-
Belated Happy Birthday Gary, a Villa legend as mentioned many times above.
Do you remember when our quiz team beat yours - other young Villa players were with you- at the Aston Tavern about 30 years ago? Thought not.
One of those pieces of news that makes me feel very old, this!
-
Modern player? I remember a Headline after a match Shaws The Law, he was then the modern day equivilant to Dennis Law.
Other players Butureguano, (The Vulture) Paulo Rossi. For those that did not see him, allways looked like he had time in front of goal, allways seamed to place the ball, could use both feet, perfect balance, great first touch. One can only imagine the player he would have become but for those couple of years I am grateful.
-
Happy birthday Gary!
A real hero for me even though I was older than him.
And once or twice in the Cork and Bottle, Boldmere, a few people thought I was him. The floppy blonde hair did it I think.
It certainly wasn't watching me play!
-
His style of play reminded me of Dalglish as much as anyone. Modern day comparisons are difficult, but something like a cross between Scholes and Berbatov is about all I can think of.
-
Yeah, good one on Berbatov, kt. As mentioned earlier, Denis Law from the past.
-
I went out with a girl once, not because I particularly fancied her, but because she was a neighbour of gary Shaw and I wanted her to get me his autograph.
Did she live at 71 Kingsleigh Drive?
-
Fact: my Mom nursed Gary Shaw's Dad at EBH when he was there and saw him on an almost daily basis. She said he was very charming and pleasant to the staff.
-

Did she live at 71 Kingsleigh Drive?
No. I can only assume Gary had more than one female acquaintance.
-
For those not old enough to remember how good he was.
