Villa v Wolves: Given, Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Clark, Albrighton, Agbonlahor, Gardner, Petrov, Keane, Bent. Subs: Warnock, Guzan, Delfouneso, Bannan, Cuellar, Weimann, Baker.
Ireland must be injured
Great to see Gardner starting

As I said on other thread, It's great to see Gardner get a start and Warnock dropped. I'm less concerned about Ireland not playing if he's injured. Come on you Villa boys!

The mind truly boggles as to how that will line up in a formation!

4-3-3, changing to 4-5-1?

Pleased to see that Warnock has been dropped, Hutton next. Agree about Gardner.

Ah, Ireland injured.  That asnwers my question in the other thread.  Warnock droppped!  About time!

I'm getting worse. In my rush to be first to post the team news I posted on the wrong thread.

Having already ran over my foot with the hoover earlier on it is fair to say I'm having a Warnock.

Im guessing thats a 4-2-3-1, Petrov and Gardner sitting with Gabby left, Marc right, Keane in the hole behind Bent.
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Dave Cooper please on January 21, 2012, 02:20:56 PM
4-4-1-1

Albrighton and Gabby wide, Petrov marshalling the middle leaving Gardner to get stuck in, Keane playing just behind Bent.

Where's N'Zog?

So, Albrighton wide right, Gabby wide left with Petrov/Gardner sitting deep and Keane linking.  Bent goal hanging of course :)

Sounds about right to me.

It'll be interesting to see how young Gardner gets on today.

I do think we look a bit thin in midfield especially as I'd always thought Gardner was a more attacking player. Wolves seem to have set up their mid by fielding as many kickers as possible.

big cheer in the boozer when we saw that team. rather have Neil Warnock at left back.. Gazza Gardner will be ok.
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on January 21, 2012, 02:26:10 PM
Just hope Gardner can grasp this chance, and we can cope with Clark at left back until we can get shot of snivler warnock, the biggest wimp since we had erm... Downing.

Post by: Monty on January 21, 2012, 02:27:05 PM
Looks a 4-2-3-1 to me. Keane needs to make sure he plays close enough to both the midfield and Bent, not leave either isolated or outnumbered.

It'll be very interesting to see how that team goes.

A lot of what we've been asking for has happened - Warnock dropped, Gardner given a chance, very attacking line-up.

Wonder what's happened to N'Zogbia?

Wow what a line up. That is quite an exciting looking team. Fair play to McCleish it is a very bold move. I presume Nzog and Ireland are not available?

This is the moment that many of us have been waiting for. To see Gardner make his full debut. He'll thrive on this in my opinion. Good luck young man.

Can't watch the game today, so cheer them on for me boys. I'll have some good news to announce today from earlier in the week.
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on January 21, 2012, 02:40:14 PM
Decent line up I think. Stan can sit, Gardner provides the energy as well as some attacking ability. Keane can float a little, which is his best role really. We look capable of keeping the ball well, which is imperitive if we're gonna get Benty a lot of service.
Gabby wide left should have a field day against their Right back. We can switch wingers too. Wolves Full-backs are shite so we could have a lot of joy today.

Lets hope we play decent football and take the game to them. I can't take much more dreary, negative football.

Not sure what to make of that. We have five strikers in the squad and four midfielders. At least we'll go for it. Looking forward to seeing Gardner.

Bit worried about the lack of Zog, he's been dropped from the team for disagreements with McLeish before this season, let's hope that's not happened again.

Also haven't heard anything of Ireland's 'injury' before just now...is something going on?

I tell you what you can put any combination of players out on the pitch, but if they are not prepared to be up for the fight and close down the opposition and have a bit of experience of premier league nouse about taking the sting out of games we will get beaten more often than not. At the moment we are lacking the fight and have become a ridiculously soft touch and teams know it.

We're far too soft in midfield. Wolves are absolutely dominating in that area and we need to take someone from outwide or up front off and bring on Bannan to give us another body in there. I might even be tempted to bring Warnock on either in midfield or at left back to bring Clark back into midfield as Wolves are dominating so much in that area.

warnock actually looked useful in midfield when he played there for coventry and blackburn -collins and dunne seem to get picked week in week out whatever performance they give , we really need cuellar and clark to be given a try in their positions.

For a manager whose spent his career in defence you would expect far better organisation than this.

"Fuck off McLeish bring in Clarke instead of Warnock". Fat lot we know about football eh.

TBH, I think our problems here are because he has got things badly wrong tactically. Our midfield of a kid and a tired Petrov are providing little impetus or support for their back four allowing Wolves midfield (which I'd say was shit) to dominate the game.

He should hook Albrighton or Keane for someone who can go in midfield.
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread

Trouble is, none of our midfielders are naturally defensive-minded, with the exception of Clark who's stuck at left-back. Petrov is supposed to be our holding player, but he's more useful in the oppo box. We need a midfield dynamo!

People can blather all they fucking like about "boo hoo, you just don't like the manager because he came from Small Heath", "we're a mid table side in mid table" and so on, but McLeish has got to start to win some fucking games, because anyone who thinks we're not poor enough to get into a relegation scrap is kidding themselves.

Putting together the odd 15 minute spell of playing well in games like this and many others so far this season is just nowhere near good enough.

Right now we look like a club going backwards very quickly.

I do agree about the football aspect but even before that, in the state we're in at the moment with lots of young players, I'd like to see our two international, experienced centre halves being able to give the players around them confidence through their own calmness, barking out orders - you stand here, you go there. Instead they panic, get pulled out of position constantly and tackle each other at corners.

Petrov may have been ok in general so far this season, but it's evident he's not good enough to take us forward. We need to replace him.

He started the season very well but since Xmas he's looked knackered. He needs a rest.

I think we have much bigger priorities than replacing Petrov.

I would have Warnock on for Keane too, he has done fuck all and not looked a threat.

If McLeish is not banging on Randy's door saying give me the cash for a midfielder and a left back, or we are fucked, then he is inept.

Ridgewell and Craig Gardner would be more use than this!

As I'm watching with no sound, what were the Wolves players getting all pissy with the linesman about prior to taking that corner?

Goal is no surprise about the goal. Our whole defence needs an overhaul. Useless.

Changes badly needed at half-time
Baker on at LB, move Clark back to midfield, Albrighton off.
Put Cuellar on and take one of the clowns in central defence off.

Shuffling the pack hasn't worked.

Oh well, let's just play exactly the same players that have been largely shit for the last season and a half then.

The problem is that we haven't shuffled out the common denominators in our comic defensive perfomances over the last 18 months.

We started really brightly then faded so fast. We are shocking at the back, and its pointless having a midfield if we just lump the ball forward at every opportunity.

They need a bollocking at half time and to get stuck in. Wolves are there for the taking, they will be nervous if we pull one back and their fans will be on their backs.

I'd like to say that AM needs to makes changes to the team, first problem he needs to put right his put together a team.

Making Wolves look like Man Utd, still on the positive side some of the most exciting years I've ever spent at Villa was when we fought our way back up the old divisions to get back into the 1st Division so relegation to the Championship isn't all doom and gloom.

It is really soul destroying how terrible we have become at least in the 2nd half of last season we signed bent in january so it looked like we were turning around and on a positive upward trend again. This year we sign a clearly off the pace Robbie Keane on loan for two months.

I honestly do not know at this present moment if we have the fight to stay up, I think we have the players just not the bottle for the scrap. I just hope there are 3 worse teams than us so we stay up, but it really is unforgivable how bad we have become.

Pointed out earlier, Wolves are not a good side and will be fighting relegation and in spite of the fact that MM made changes the other night he made those changes for seasoned players, players with in a lot of cases double figure appearances under there belt, they didn't use the cup game to blood new players and Blues made them look ordinary.

In contrast Villa are making players like Keightly look world class.

Lets not forget Wolves could easily be 4 or 5 up.

What worries me is that in a dogfight you look to your senior pros to inspire and to scrap to get you out of it. Heskey, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Petrov, Bent, Gabby would I guess be our senior pros. 3 out of the 7 couldn't give a fuck, 1 of them is a laughing stock, Bent isn't really someone who you look to to inspire others so that leaves Petrov and Gabby.

We really need to make a change to the way we're set up. Keane is the obvious candidate to come off as he hasn't been involved at all and we are badly losing the battle in midfield, an extra body in the middle would help us out massively.

Albrighton's not been too effective but i can still see him getting one or two decent balls in. I feel sorry for Clark, he had a couple of decent passes going forward but has been totally exposed by the midfield and Gabby, and his lack of experience in that position has been exposed.

I agree that Frimpongs greater athleticism is telling at the moment. It's not something that any of our midfield options gives us to be fair apart from Gardner maybe.
Title: Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread

Surely we must have changed something at HT?

Keane, Albrighton and Petrov would all be no great loss. We need to get another body into the midfield. McLeish's tactics have been awful today and no mistake. He seems to have tried to accomodate as many attacking players as possible without any thought to team shape.

The midfield has offered no support to the back four. We have nobody covering Clark and neither Petrov nor Gardner are effective defensive midfielders exposing the defence badly.

It appears to me that he is trying to accommodate as many attacking players in the team as possible, to prove he is not a defensive manager. This is without any thought to tactics and how you setup against the opposition. Away from home against a team with a very physical midfield surely you have to have a bit of bite in the middle.

He appears utterly clueless because he can neither instill the fight in the team to win or set the team up to counter the opposition. Its frankly terrible.

Don't me wrong Chas he has alot to do before he convinces me but I think people are far too quick to demonise every decision. Many people (me included) thought we needed to get Warnock on and Clarke in the middle...anyway - seems to have worked.

Come on the Villa!!

Yeah I hope he is not seriously injured, but from the replay he took one almighty whack in the face from Petrov, who in fairness at that height had no idea he was there. Brave or foolish to go for a diving header there?

Anyhow, he is going to be an England player I reckon so I hope he is ok.
