Our overall performance this evening.
-
Ciaran Clark showing that he should be starting more (hopefully).
-
N'Zogbia and Albrighton having superb games.
-
Taking the game to the opposition.
-
Carlos Cuellar.
-
Carlos Cuellar.
|
Carlos Cuellar running like a girl. Well it always makes me chuckle.
-
I thought he was immense today.
-
Flowing passing football (not hoof).
-
Albrighton constantly hitting those whipped in early crosses across the 6 yard box, when Bents back he'll thrive on them.
-
Albrighton was superb, N'Zogbia much better. Hutton suspended, thank fuck. He really is quite shit...
-
I thought we were superb tonight. Albrighton, N'Zogbia, Clark, Ireland yes Ireland all brilliant. Yes we lost but....
-
The crowd supporting the team throughout.
-
Cannot fault the performance today decent games all round! one major positive to take is that Hutton is suspended!!
-
Carlos Cuellar at centre half - unforunately Huttons red card probably means Collins will get his place back with Carlos filling in at right back again before being dropped again.
The continual re-emergence of Marc Albrighton - just what Bent needs when he is fit and back in the team.
Charles N'Zogbia finally starting to show there is a player in there somewhere - see above reference to Bent.
Stephen Ireland was very good. If he can do it against Arsenal as well as Hereford, then that really does have to bode well.
Ciaran Clarke, did exactly what you knew he would do - should be one of the first names on the team sheet.
Brad Guzan - ensuring we are not missing Shay Given is a migthy achievement.
Succesfully defended 12 Arsenal corners until unlucky 13 - would we have kept the first 12 out with Collins ? (See above re: Carlos Cuellar)
Mcleish has the players with him, certainly more so than the fans - despite some negative tactics and previously below par games at no time have I felt any sense that he may lose the dressing room.
We may have lost but at least we were entertained. I know the next opponents could not be a more different type of proposition, but they give you hope that we could go to Stoke and maybe win ?
-
IT'S CHRISTMAS!!
-
so then, what did I miss?
-
Albrighton was superb, N'Zogbia much better. Hutton suspended, thank fuck. He really is quite shit...
Hutton? - no, he isn't. He's just mindless and a little thuggish.
-
The clear evidence that if we try to play football not hoofball we can compete and the fans appreciate that.
-
Couldn`t make it last night due to a prior engagement in Formby - glad to hear the performance was improved, however, not wishing to pee on your chips Legion but: We played well at home and lost, we conceded too many corners, we conceded a late goal, Hutton got his long awaited red card. We are not exactly in freefall but we are starting the slide down the table which was forecast by many - it does nor auger well for the New Year.
Clearly we are writing off the games against the top 5 or 6 - Lets just hope the "Ginger One" can get the troops rallied for the games against those who we will undoubtedly be close to, come early January. Supporting this club is never easy is it?
-
How can you say we're writing off games against the top6 if you didn't see it last night?
-
I think the last 18 months would have been much less painful if we'd seen more of Carlos and less of James Collins. Last night also showed that N'Zogbia and Albrighton are pretty good replacements for our former first choice wingers.
Clark has a lot of potential and Richard Dunne gets unfair criticism from villa fans. He is still a very solid defender.

Dunne looked a better defender without Collins . Him and Cuelalr looked alot better together

With any luck Chris Herd will be back and he can go into the right back slot and we can offload Collins in Jan.
I've said for some time now that I thought Collins was a liability this season and that I thought his crap performances were affecting Huttons play. I actually thought Hutton was doing ok until the final 5 minutes of madness.
The red card was a booking so it had to be a red given that Van Persie "got" him booked a couple of minutes prior to that.
CN'Z, Albighton were great. I thought Ireland was doing it too until his knock.
Carlos, Clark and Dunne were a great trio and Guzan looks comfortable between the sticks.
It always seems to be, "Blame the manager" when we're bad, but, "Praise the players" when we do well.
I think a nod of approval should go McLeish's way too.
-
I just wish sometimes AMC would say to Collins ' stop fooking hoofing the ball , mindless tit '
I mean , we looked better without JC hoofing it , so why does he do it , why isn't he told not to . Cuellar only played because JC was not 100% fit . It has taken 17 games for AMC to realise that passing the ball and not hoofing is the forward way for this club .

Away with your negativity. There are other threads for that - this is a happy place!
-
Everyone's suspicions that Villa would be a better footballing side without Heskey and Collins were proven correct.
-
How can you say we're writing off games against the top6 if you didn't see it last night?
Easy - by listening to the great ginger twat spouting on about the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool for example.

Ok - I am really pleased that we lost again at home - I am distraught that I missed the opportunity to see us play so well. :)
I shall however, look forward to us playing equally as well at Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford, Anfield and The Emirates !

To be fair mate, he wasn't saying you shouldn't complain, just that there about 1 billion other threads where people are complaining, but it would be nice if there was one thread where we could at least try to look at some of the positives.

I understand that under normal circumstances, but there was no surrender last night. We had more possession than Arsenal and were on top most of the game and played some really good stuff. The performance was more important than the result last night, because it showed we can perform well and play football. Also the fact the fans were applauding the team off at the end shows how well we played. Even Wenger admitted they didn't deserve to win.

two positives
no Collins and no Heskey

See not hard, was it?
And in order to be fair I'll balance things out be having a bit of a moan:-
I can't believe shit players like Hutton and Ireland upped their game and took away one of our chief outlets of frustration venting. And what was Charles N'-fucking-Zogbia doing looking like a £10m player? Don't these twats know they're crap??
-
I must say I'm feeling better today although we lost because we actually had a go at the opposition and N'zog's and Albrighton's performance were much better happy days.
-
If N'Zogbia continues to improve I won't feel so daft with this user name.
-
Looking forward to playing like we did last night with added Darren Bent to put the chances away.
-

Spot on, but, in fairness to AMcL he probably does tell him not to do it.
Let's just hope this is the start of the begining of a new defensive era.
-
I think one thing about the 'hoof' was playing Clark in that deep midfield role as he was usually available for a pass from the CBs, which hasn't always been the case this season.
-
Brilliant performance.
Big problem though- Bent would have probably scored but we wouldn't have played so well with Bent in the team because we would have had to sacrifice a creative player.
I'd start same 11 against Stoke but with Herd at RB and Bent on the Bench.
-
I'll be more than cheerful if we repeat last nights performance and pick up 3 points at Stoke on Boxing Day. After that I won't complain if we turn over Chelsea.
-
Cuellar in for Collins and Clark in that role are two things I've been waiting for. Getting Albrighton and N'Zogbia playing well is vital too, that will be a massive help to Bent. Hopefully Herd can nail down the right back position as well.
-
It'd be daft to leave Bent on the bench if he's fit. Yes, he is a luxury player, yes we need N'Zogbia, Gabby and Albrighton in the side but he is still one of the most prolific goal scorers in the Premier League over the past 5 or 6 seasons. It's be folly not to play him.
With the players we have, we should be looking to score two or three every game.
Maybe we should go all out for a top class defensive central midfielder? If we had a really solid midfielder to slot in beside any of Petrov, Herd, Clark, Bannan we could play an attacking 4-4-2 with Albrighton and N'Zogbia as wingers and Gabby and Bent up front?
Am I daft?
-
No offence mate but how is Bent a luxury player... apart from his transfer fee and salary? He ought to be first name on the team sheet and our gameplan should be to put the ball on the end of his boot at every available opportunity without question.
-
Bent is a bit of aluxury, although perhaps that isn't quite the right word. He doesn't contribute much to the development of play, and we struggle to play snything but 442 with him in the side when that often isn't the best formation to play
-

Exactly right Matt. Bent is the icing on the cake but the other players have to do a lot of his work in order to let him tap it in from 5 yards. If you look at most the top teams the centre forward is a lot harder to identify, I mean this in the sense that they have at least on other major asset to their game - Messi and Rooney both often play as a false Number 9. Van Persie is equally adept at dropping deep or to the wing. Adebayor is the target man to allow VDV to push forward.
I'd say that Chicarito is probably the only player of Bent's ilk that is playing right at the top level.
-
Error
-
I was tempted to start a new topic as SOMETHING has changed but here will do.
The players first instinct is to pass the ball. They even over egg it sometimes as if to prove the point that they're passing the ball. Watching a winning team is obviously easy but today (v Chelsea) even whilst loosing they played good, watchable football.
Any ideas on what the difference is?
1. Clark in midfield both protecting the back four and being an out ball for Collins and Dunne
2. Ireland's inventiveness
3. Dropping Bent
4. A change of coaching style
5. More power to KMac, less to Grant
I haven't got a clue but I like it.
-
Clark has provided a very calming influence and has allowed Stan and now Ireland to push forward. It's a bit of a shame for Herd who was doing a similar job. Clark is more composed on the ball and reminds me of a young Gaz Baz in possession. These boys can play a bit and they just need to keep believing they can.
-
Someone else mentioned it on the post match thread but the word Hope springs to mind too.
-
I guess today that they pretty much all played to the potential, so it's easy to optimistic but you look at this squad (and formation) and everyone looks comfortable in their position. It's not top 4 but it should play good football and definitely should not get relegated:
---------------------------------------Given(Guzan)-----------------------------------
Hutton(Cuellar)-----Collins(Cuellar)----Dunne(Cuellar)----Warnock(stephens)
-----------------------Petrov(gardner)------Clark(Herd)---------------------------- (also Delph)
-------Albrighton(Nzog)----------Ireland(Bannan)---------Gabby(Nzog)---------
--------------------------------------Bent(Gabby)------------------------------------- (also Fonz)
That's a squad of twenty players wherein all would be involved for pretty much every match. Good stuff.
