Yep. Win is a must.

Guzan, Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; N’Zogbia, Petrov, Herd, Albrighton, Agbonlahor, Bent.

Looks like 4-4-2. Might be good for a rapid counter-attacking strategy, but we're relying on Petrov to play the outball like Barry used to, and I'm not sure he's got it in him anymore. Still, there's hope.

This is essentially a must win, so win Villa.

Guzan - Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock - Albrighton, Petrov, Herd, N'Zogbia - Gabby, Bent.

Subs: Marshall, Cuellar, Ireland, Heskey, Weimann, Delfouneso

The team's not far off what I would have played, though I'd play Bannan not Albrighton. I reckon that side will struggle to keep the ball.

Bench extremely attacking too.

Over all, I'd have thought McLeish is trying to demonstrate that he is an attacking manager. I'd rather he coached the side to pass the ball properly than stick an almost ridiculous amount of attacking players in the 16. We could get caught out if we need to bolster the backline through injury.

Who's this Cahill bloke?

BOLTON: Jaaskelainen, Robinson, Cahill, Tuncay, Knight, K Davies, M Davies, Klasnic, Eagles, Pratley, Boyata. Subs: Bogdan, Steinsson, Muamba, Petrov, Kakuta, O'Halloran, N'Gog.

14:09
Paul AVFC: VILLA: Guzan, Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; N’Zogbia, Petrov, Herd, Albrighton, Agbonlahor, Bent. Subs: Ireland, Marshall, Clark, Weimann, Delfouneso, Bannan, Heskey.

Come on you Villa boys!  Not convinced with Albrighton either, didn't do a great deal last week (who did?).  Decent options from the bench though.

Sorry, you're right, I meant Bannan (hence the 'very attacking bench' comment!)

It looks promising but then so did last weeks selection. Hopefully, they will be let of the leash as Bolton are poop and we should be able to at least get a draw and probably a win.

Delph not even on the bench? Is he injured?

Well set up to play on the break, but let's see if we can keep the bloody football. I'm not generally a fan of outright 442 with two wingers and two out and out fwds, though Gabby does now seem better able to drop deeper and link play than he used to be. I think it's probably right to play 2 up top, as Bent can only really play there if he's playing in a side that passes through midfield. He's not great if you play hoof ball.

Jesus, I've just heard Pat Murphy wiht his tongue so far up West Broms arse on 5Live he was tickling Woy's tonsils.  Fair assessment of the Villa though maybe a touch too pro-McLeish.

Strangely looking forward to what will most likely be a turgid match. Surely can't play any worse than the man u/spurs games.... and if we do then hopefully it could lead to parting ways with AM.

We must NOT spend the entire game hoofing the ball. We'll win very few headers against their defence.

That's about as an attacking line up he could have used.   If we play anything other than 4-4-2, it's a crime.

Title: Re: Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on December 10, 2011, 02:57:43 PM
Bent will like seeing Albrighton in the side anyway. Big game for him. Paul Robinson is utter dirge so he needs to get the better of him. He showed what he is capable of last season and hopefully this will be a day when he kicks back into gear.

Regardless of the personnel though, the philosophy of how we play is more important. If in doubt hoof it out must stop.

Dont think Petrov is able to play in a midfield 2 anymore. Also will be interesting to see Gabby and Bent up front together as both of them prefer playing up top alone or with a playmaker behind them.

That Bolton side is shocking.

Really iffy against a side with pace.

I wonder if McLeish is actually telling those oafs to do that or if they are doing it of their own accord.

Increasingly, my money is on the latter though I guess you cannot play passing football with Dullins in much the same way as you cannot play cricket with golf clubs.

This is good stuff. Our best performance of the season. Bolton are not all that but if we can use that to draw confidence and show the manager how we can play if we think positively it will increase our hopes of picking up some more points.

So, so, so much better. Mitigated of course by the fact that Bolton are absolutely abominable (no team has ever deserved to be booed off at half-time quite so much), but you can only beat what's in front of you and we're taking full advantage. If only we'd stop bloody hoofing it, we might have even more joy!

Much, much better. Let's not get too excited - it's not over yet and Bolton look horrendous. But we're looking bright aren't we?

N'Zogbia looking bright if his final touch / ball  is still poor. Albrighton looking good too as is Gabby. Bent still doesn't really look at the races.

Herd is doing quite well, though I still think he gives the ball away a fair bit. I also think Warnock is doing well as is Dunne.

Nervous about Guzan still. I reckon he's got another mistake in him today.

For me its not about the opposition its about our mentality and this has been how we wanted our team to start against spurs, Swansea, man utd despite what the score may be.
Title: Re: Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread

We look much much better balanced playing 442.

Stans had a great game (apart from his terrible miss) shows how important he is to us still.
Title: Re: Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on December 10, 2011, 03:58:39 PM
even warnock is playing well. dunne has been excellent defensively but is taking too much responsibility on the ball. Just pass it to one of the midfielders. It is their job to create. Bent is hopeless at holding the ball up so its fairly pointless hitting it long to him (in his general direction).

petrov is maybe on a hefty wedge every week but no way should he be allowed leave in jan.

only negative has been bent really. he has been really poor. His movement is dire. hernandez plays a similar role at united but offers so much more. bent is only getting in gabby's way at the moment.

In an attempt to change our luck I decided to stay away from streams, radio and here apart from pre kick-off and HT. And stick to watching darts on ITV4 with just an occasional flick onto Final Score to see how we're doing. And it seems to be working! You may thank me at FT when I return and we have won 5-0!

Come on you Villa boys!!!!
Title: Re: Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on December 10, 2011, 03:59:10 PM
I know Bolton are dire, but give our lads some credit. I think our overall play has really stifled Bolton, and having proper width is helping a lot. N'Zogbia looks a different player, and the goal from Marco will do him so much good. Yes, Bolton are mince but I think we've contributed to that. Let's get an early 3rd in the 2nd half and enjoy a game for once. It will give the lads a lot of confidence.

Very encouraging, but the next goal is crucial. Bolton get it and suddenly we'll be on the backfoot. Keep calm and getting the ball to Marc and Chaz and we can continue to run riot.

Great to see Warnock in such advanced (even central at times!) positions too.

Agree about Warnock but wouldn't say Bent's been that bad. Always there or thereabouts in the box, decent shot from the Albrighton pull back and almost flicked Gabby's cross in before it reached Albrighton and helped make space for the run and finish. Fancy him to score second half

If he took Bent off he'd bring Heskey on and we'd be back to hoof-flick-chase football

Are the black armbands for Gary Speed still?

It's Bolton's first match since it happened, by all accounts. Or first home match.

Thanks Paulie, that makes sense.

Bolton haven't drawn yet this season, we have seven of them. Couple that with the huge amount of injury time to be added and you have that sinking feeling.

This isn't a bad way to use Heskey, to hold the ball up while we defend a lead. It's sitll not inspiring to see him walking on to the pitch though...And he's already fell over, ffs.

We just need to keep the fucking ball. It's not that diffuclt against a team this shit, but we keep hoofing it 50 yards up field and giving it back to them.

Brainless.

In the Premier League, against whichever opposition you play, if you give the ball back to them on a consistent basis it's going to hurt you. We never, ever learn that.

Agreed, I thought the whole point of bringing HEskey on was to hold up the ball and help us keep posession. Apparently not.

once again shocking 'safety first' shit.  We should've come out in the 2nd half and kept the ball for 10mins, taken them out of thwe game and then gone on for a big win.  Instead we've done the same thing we've done all season under mcliesh and gone ultra defensive, just hoofing it away.

Even if we do win this it's yet another example of why we need to get a better manager who's willing to be positive.

i think it's aimed more at there being a larger chance of one of our hoofs hitting one of our own players.
