I don't expect that we will win but I'm happy so long as we are trying.

Phew Heskey and Petrov out.  Would like to have seen Clark in the side but let's not get too greedy, AM is not that bright.  Should be exciting to see them go forward.

Come lads get into em.

N'Zogbia injured?

Really hope Jenas, Albrighton and Bannan step up today and cement places in the side. Most pleasing selection of the season so far for me, but then will go and get thumped.

This is what we have been calling for, now let's not blame the manager if it goes tits up.

Looks like a very exciting line-up, one to have a real go at them.    My only concern is it probably means Bannan on the left, which I don't like.

Surprised Albrighton came straight into the team having not featured for a while - Zog not even on the bench?  Must be injured, or very much out of favour.

I rather get hammered 4-0 with the line up selected today than 2-0 with the lineup seen at Spurs.

Really hope Albrighton plays well.  In this game last season he was outstanding.

Bannan could be most advanced of three in the middle, with Marc and Gabby out wide.

Jones will start in midfield for them.

Gabby could be on the Left and Bannan behind Bent. Although the team looks good, it will all decide on how the manager sends them out. 10 behind the ball and Bent isolated up front to chase forlorn hoofs means it doesn't matter which 10 he picks.

It's a passing team alright. Just slightly worried that there's only one tackler in the front 6 (Herd). He might be in for a busy afternoon unless he gets sent off.

I'll be behind the settee if anyone needs me.

After seeing the team selection I am actually looking forward to this.

We may well get striped - again - but at least we appear to be approaching it with a positive frame of mind.

That should really have been the team, more or less, for our last two games.

Just read this.. hopefully he just overslept or something minor and didn't rebel because of his circumstances in the squad.

edit, Charlie skipped treatment earlier in the week. Does the punishment fit the crime, I think not.

Just in, looks like we've made a half-decent start. I'm happy with that starting line-up (well, maybe not the defence....) so I hope it comes off. It's certainly worth trying against teams poorer than Man Utd, anyway.

We've picked a more positive line up but we're still being quite negative on the pitch. The defence really is not very good at all, sadly and that's what tends to cost us.

Sitting back and defending and hitting teams on the break is a decent tactic if you can:

a) defend
b) pass the ball quickly and accurately forwards towards the opponents goal.

Unfortunately we can do neither.

You're right, he was, and then chasing back as though he were running through treacle. I know there is a case for letting defenders play themselves into some sort of form, but they have surely, surely got to be changed, haven't they? They're just rubbish, and it's not like we don;t have the option to replace one or two of them.

Waddle is dead right. He can see Bent is useless on his own. We can all see it. So why can't McLeish? FFS stick Gabby up front and tell him to turn Vidic at every possible opportunity. Every time Vidic finds himself faced with a pacey attacker he gets himself sent off*.

*well, NEARLY every time.

We back off.  We don't press.  That means that we often rely on the other team making mistakes to get the ball, which means possession is a rare quantity so should be precious when we get it.  So what do we do?  Give the ball away usually within 30 seconds of getting it.  We simply cannot get into games that way, will never build pressure.

We seem so very poor. No class, no vitality.
Worst of all for me is playing Bent up front alone. It doesn't work and we all know it.
He'll be off at the end of the season - I just hope we haven't been relegated by then.

There is nothing from Villa at all. 42 minutes, not even a fucking shot.

We've had an attempt on target, it was a header from about 12 yards that looked more like a backpass than a shot.

I'm actually not so sure. Without all of the players we;ve sold over the past 2 or 3 years it's fairly terrible. Bent, Gabby, and a couple of others are good, but then even under O'Leary we had the likes of Laursen, Mellberg and Barry.

I don't think that's the case at all. A few of the players have come out and praised him, saying to trust him and support the club. His tactics just won't cut it at this level. He can't design an efficient offensive attack that allows for a balance in the midfield so our defending is proper.

Its been an observation for a few months but I believe we have the poorest midfield and the worst full backs in the league...coupled with the worst manager!

We are giving it a go.  Keep it on the deck, we have the players who can cope.  And if Guzan gets it, I want to see players sprinting rather than ambling, away from him, to give him some options.  Come on Villa!

Full backs give us poor defending and nothing going forward.

They reckon the Holte End at Villa Park is Villa's 12th man. It's certainly more mobile than Emile Heskey.

Looks to me like hes lost the dressing room in much the same way that houllier did- lets hope whoever comes next unloads dunne and collins .

Dunne and Collins aren't the problem.

Agree with the dressing room being lost. It was clear in the Swansea game that the players hadn't a clue about what McLeish wanted them to do. Hs is an utter buffoon. Worse than Houllier and DOL.

We're so awful it's embarrassing. It's not just the cluelessness, lack of goals, and total derth in anything remotely close to attractive football, it's the fact that almost every match we've played this season, we've gone about ruining the game. Grinding every ounce of possible enjoyment for our fans, the opposition fans and offering absolutely fuck all for any passing neutrals.

Get rid of this clown managing the club! Furthermore, Randy can bugger off and all. It's just horrible.

Clueless, utterly clueless.

That was a very ordinary Man Utd team, if they played like that the other night v Palace no wonder Palace did them.

AM, I'm lost for words as to what you tried to do in the 2nd half, you pulled Gabby inside and up front and we started to threaten, as everybody and his uncle knows Vidic can't live with Gabby, next minute Gabby is wide left again.

Bent do yourself one big favour mate, get yourself transferred out, under this manager you goals tally will go through the floor, soon you'll start to suffer withdrawal and wonder what you have done to justify solitary confinement.

RL, if you can't act on this we are lost in time as a club.

I haven't been interested all season - No money, Blues manager coming in, selling off our prize assets, etc, etc.....but I thought I'd give em a chance today to see how they're getting on.

That is the worst Villa side I've seen in decades. We are in serious trouble.

Teams tend to either have creativity or fight - We have neither. I think we're fooked.

My thoughts exactly. This clown in charge of our club is going to be the cause of you missing the Euro's next summer.

I thought I'd give McLeish a go and give him a little time..... But he has surpassed even my low expectations as to how shit he is.

Me too. A deafeat to Man u is virtually what you sign up to as a Villa fan now, but I would appreciate a bit of fight, giving it a go, rousing the crowd a bit. When that header came to Heskey at the end - I knew it would end badly.

I am Holte End lower ST and at half time 8 ST holders got up and left and never came back, I wished I had joined them. Heskey spending 5 minutes looking away from play tieing his laces then having a shot that went out for a throw in. That was absolute shite. Man u never got out of 2nd gear we had 1 shot on target. I do not look forward to my football at the moment.
