Andy Lochhead at Burnley today standing with other former Burnley players, waiting to pay tribute to Jimmy Adamson.
He still looks as hard as nails.

For some of the younger fans, can somebody please tell me what he did. He's mentioned on here a fair bit but i've never heard stories from my dad or other Villa fans about him

Andy Lochhead was a battling centre forward who was key to Villa getting out of the Third Division. He was not afraid to mix it with some rough centre halves; one of whom was whacked in the face one night at York while the ref was looking elsewhere!
He scored critical goals for us against Bournemouth and Man Utd in two games that are among the favourite memories of those who were around at the time. He also scored a hat trick at Oldham away in a 6-0 win. He returned with Oldham to Villa Park, not long after he had left Villa, as coach or assistant manager and received one of the finest standing ovations that I have ever seen.
There is a bit of footage of Andy Lochhead on this memories forum and it is worth seeking out.

Yes DC5 I can confirm that the ovation Andy received that day when he returned as Oldham coach said everything about what he did for Villa at that time, it was the best i have ever heard in fourty years supporting Villa.

I remember the ovation as well and thoroughly deserved. The first Villa number 9 I saw and was a battering ram, not scared of anything and great attitude

One of the few Villa players who fully deserves the now sadly over-used epithet "legend".

There have probably been at least half a dozen or so far better centre-forwards in my time supporting the Villa - lest we forget that he was at the tail end of his career and playing in Division 3 -, but with the exception of the first few years of Andy Gray and Peter Withe, none were as instrumental in moving the club forward or as in tune with the supporters desire for a genuine grafter who wore the shirt with passion.

Chopsticks oops.

Have some respect young man. See the Holte -well THAT  is where we used to stand - and that is how it used to be on the big games. Biggest 'end' in football.  Hear that chant - well THAT  is the whole ground behind the team and that is the noise we used to make. Remember it was only 48K, you should have been there for the Man U semi at 63k! See that pitch well THAT is just crap actually.

Must go and polish the Zimmer..

Andy Lochhead, George Curtis both players coming to the end of distinguished careers when they arrived at the Villa but who gave great service to us.  Andy Lochhead, George Curtis=MEN, the like of which I doubt we will ever see again.  I don't recall seeing either whinge the way todays namby pambies do whenever a gust of wind passes them by.  Retribution springs to mind.  Players the phrase "men of steel" was invented for.

I don't know if Andy's nickname followed him to VP, but in those days if you were discussing Villa players and you said 'The Tank' everyone one knew who you were talking about.
He quite literally was like a human tank. Once he had the ball no opposition defender was going to get it off him, and it was worth the entrance money to see centre halves and full backs bouncing off him like they didn't exist.
Definitely worthy of 'Villa Legend' status.

  My 1st Villa hero.

Remember running on the pitch when about 7 or 8, patting him on the back saying "Well done Andy".Great player, not the most gifted, but gave everything.

Chopper Harris recently said he was the hardest player he had ever played against. Not sure how long he would last in todays game though.

A bit longer than Chopper Harris I would imagine.

Yes. George Curtis broke his nose in the first minute at Notts County away and played the full match. His nose was visibly flattened across his face but Curtis would not come off despite Tony Hateley, the County centre forward, pleading with him to do so. I had the privilege of meeting George at Vic Crowe's funeral.

Tony Morley & Gary Cahill. Tommy Cummings sort-of did it by playing for them and managing us.
