OSTRAVA, Czechoslovakia, Nov 15, Reuters - Josef Venglos, Czechoslovak manager of English first division soccer club Aston Villa, did some poaching in his home land to sign Banik Ostrava sweeper Ivo Stas.
The deal, including a two-year contract, is worth 200,000 pounds sterling (390,000 dollars) and was settled at a meeting in Prague earlier this week between Banik officials and Villa chairman Doug Ellis, the Czechoslovak club said on Thursday.
Stas, 25, who is on the fringes of the national team, scored an own goal when Villa eliminated Banik from the UEFA Cup last month.
Stas, who joins fellow Czechoslovaks Ludek Miklosko (West Ham) and Jan Stejskal (Queen's Park Rangers) in the English league, has already left for England and could play in Villa's game at Norwich on Saturday.

..........or maybe not.

The day before I was born.
-
Surely the only Villa player to score a Villa goal and yet never play for us.
-
As if he doesn't have a wikipedia page
-
Shame, he looked a bloody good player as well.
-
An unbeatable goals to games ratio: Appearances 0, Goals 1.
-
I saw him score for us in the flesh! (But never play for us of course)
You're right Chico - 21 years ago, sodding scary!
-
Imagine how confusing this thread is for any young fans.
-
What a player he could have been, did he play again after he left us?
-
I saw him play and score for us in a pre season friendly at Witney Town in 1991. It was quite possibly his only appearance in a Villa shirt unless anyone saw him in a reserve game?
-
Wow.
Ivo Stas is the first search I've ever made on Wikipedia that came back with nowt.

Always remember going to some away game or other later on that season or the next. Whoever the home side was had a 'roll call' of opposition players both past and present that season and their purchase prices and sale prices if they had subsequently left. Under Ivo Stas it just said 'Insurance Settlement'.
