I am not suggesting we are ripping up any trees at present but contrast that with the shit spouted about King Kenny's Anfield revolution and it boils my piss
For all the money he has spent i would be expecting a much better return
Henderson - £20mil - hardly getting a regular game
Downing - £20 million - hardly ripping up trees
Carrol - £35 mil - laughable
Adams - a poor mans Barry @ £9.5 mil
I am sure the media and our own fans would be spitting blood if AM had spunked that much on those players with the poor return they have had
-
Henderson is Lee Hendrie the second.
Downing is never worth £20mil, he had half a good season in a very poor Villa side.
Carroll? Only priced at that price because of deadline day, Torres money and because he's English. He's probably no better than Dion Dublin was.
Adam, interesting one. Was a good player in a very attacking team last season. Different role for him this season.

The latest scapegoat if you are to believe the scousers....
My biggest beef with im is that he's a squad player when we needed a match-winner. He's a good player and he brings us something different but on current form he's woeful and why he's getting the nod ahead of Maxi, Bellamy and Downing is completely beyond me. For all the good he does, he's just not a game changer. I mean can anyone honestly say that if we were a goal down, playing averagely and were to bring on Downing that you'd feel a boost in moral and a new-found belief we might just win it.
I'm glad it's working out so well for the weasel.
-
Couldnt care less what they do or dont do, apart from when they play us, or how the media treat them.
Do we get a raw deal off the national media ? You hear fans from lots of clubs saying they do not get the attention they deserve. I never hear fans from anywhere saying they are getting more media attention than deserve.

I'm confused. If they're talking about Downing, how can he get the nod ahead of himself?
-
King Kenny, the poor mans MON.
-
Why. Why get so upset about the press. In '94 ManUre were dead certs for a treble. We were given NO chance. did I give a feck...Not really 'cos it helped the odds go up on a Villa win, (I also got score correct). the press don't give a feck about Villa and midland clubs in general unless it's negative - relegation.
Thats just one example of many i could give you.

Here's one from one of their forums after Saturdays game.........
Shit again. Consistent in his 1 good cross per game tho.
Thing is about him, i don't see him improving. Cos before he joined us i thought he was absolute shit. So i have no reason to believe he will improve.
20m down the drain. Could of bought 3 good players from abroad at that pirce. We already got Carroled, why get Carrolled again in the summer with Downing and Henderson. Ridiculous.
-
Agent Kenny...
-
Ah i'm loving that they hate downing, Thank you very much for £20m la la la
-
Have to admit i found the Carrol fee hilarious. 35m for basically the 2011 version of Mark Hately is pushing it. It sort of got lost in the fuss over the Torres fee and his lack of goals but i notice Torres has now managed more goals than Carrol has since his transfer
-
Although I go along with the whole 'who gives a fuck?' thought process on this one, I do wonder what the reaction would be, both from the fans and media, had Roy Hodgson made those signings at those fees.
-

Would be nice if we had invested some more of the cash in the current squad....

Well read this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/nov/04/aston-villa-falling-crowds
Although, as states, Villa's attendances are down as well as a number of other clubs, yet Villa are still the team to get it in the neck. Why?
Their site hits for threads on games when Manure/Arse etc are playing are very high. This either shows A. Those kind of fans are attracted to this paper, or B. A lot of fans of these particular teams are not actually at games, and go to the paper that is unashamedly pro these teams.
(Also, read the comments, some are hilarious).
-
I've always thought of Downing that, if you're 1-0 or 2-0 down, or even when the game's tight and level and you need something special, he's not the man to do it. Not hindsight, I think I posted the same in the summer when we were talking about him leaving. I read a stat last week on Downing - zero goals and zero assists so far. I'm sure he'll turn it around at some point and contribute well enough in time, but don't think he'll hit the levels Liverpool were hoping for. I thought we paid too much for him at £10m, let alone the £20m they spent.
I think Adam's been good though. Trying not to think how our midfield would look if we'd signed him and also Cabaye, who Houllier had reportedly targeted.
-
Have to say I'm not really sure what Liverpool fans expect. Outside of Man United, City and Chelsea, surely the best they can expect is a battle for 4th to 6th place alongside Arsenal and Spurs? Which discounting Newcastle's freakish run of form is exactly what they've got.

I was only thinking this the other day.
That cock Mickey Quinn on talkscouse still seems to think that the bin dippers can win the league!
A caller rang in and pointed out that if you compared the number of games Hodgson had in charge compared to the same number Dalglish had then their record was virtually the same. Quinn could only reply that King Kenny was better because he is errr King Kenny
Any midfield with Adam, Henderson and Downing in it is going to win fuck all

If you look at their squad, then that's a pretty fair assessment. But their fans don't do that, instead they focus on the "We're Liverpool and he's King Kenny" side of things, which leads to the delusion.

Again to be fair, I don't think he's done at all badly given how his managerial career nosedived at the end, and the fact that he was out of management for so long. But bugger me, he's spent an awful lot of money on some shit.
-
I read the article on Saturday and, when you look at the picture, it's of the away section when Wigan came to town. Now, I'm not saying that attendances aren't down, but at least use a more relevant image. We can't do much about Wigan bringing very few fans.
-
My point was two fold
Firstly to dispell the myth of King Kenny
Secondly to highlight that if there is ever a negative aspect about football (key players leaving, crowds down etc) it always seems to be us used as the barometre and i just dont get why
As someone said above - imagine if Woy or any other manager had spunked £100 million on Adam / Carrol / Downing / Henderson they would have been ripped to shreds
It is amazing how the media panders to the scousers faltering ego's
-
Downing can go fuck himself.
-
Downing was crap is crap and always will be crap, anyone who thought he was anything more than average when he played for us needs there head shaking around a bit.
unfortunatly we used around 10 mill of the money to buy in N'Zog who at the moment is just as bad if not worse,
The Liverpool stuff is just incredible [although i think carroll might come good long term] they are just an average side put together at great cost, Dalgliesh is yesterdays man, and Liverpool are doing what they are always doing living in the past, i know we are guilty of that to, but its always nice to have a good laugh at them whenever we get the chance
-
Has Downing's start at 'Liverpool been any worse than N'Zog's for us?
I guess the difference is that N'Zog is likely to get better and better through the season, if last season was anything to go by, whereas Downing has perhaps peaked.
-
Downing can go fuck himself.
Can he? I never knew he was a contortionist as well as a c*nt.

Win the league - Jesus that made me laugh. Obviously all those pies have blurred his vision.
As for Downing, long may the Liverpool fans criticise the vile little weasel-faced scrotum.
-
Wonderful thread on Koptalk..'Missing Person Announcement - Stuart Downing'. It would appear his one decent cross per game is not enough for some. What were they expecting? Saying that, £35m (s)hitman Andy Carroll has problems putting the ball in the net from 2 yards and King Kenny is dividing the ranks with his poor team selections. I guess when you waste £100m you're obliged to pick your signings.
-
Dalglish is exactly like MON in a sense that he likes paying over the odds for average British players, uses outdated tactics, can't do well do at home against lesser teams but can get the 'lads' up for it away. Both of them as players had success. Both of them managed Celtic. They're both media darlings as well. And he'll hit the roof (like MON) where 6th is the best he can do.

not too bothered about the media but I do think its laughable that MotD have Hansen & Lawro on to 'objectively' discuss Liverpool when they wouldnt dare criticise their mate.
-
I'm not sure whether this helps or hinders the "anti villa" theory but this was in the guardian's "5 things we learnt from the weekend" bit:
Villa need fans' backing, not barracking
Perhaps the Aston Villa support were piqued by the Guardian's revelation that they are currently in possession of the Fickle Fans award* because more than 35,000 turned up to watch their team take on Norwich – the club's highest attendance of the season and a solid few thousand up on the average. And they were not disappointed, with five goals and a classy display of Wide Boy and Target Man link-up play between Gabriel Agbonlahor and Darren Bent to take in.
Beating newly promoted Norwich at home by the odd goal in five is not in itself reason to break out the low-alcohol lagers – though the Canaries have already proved themselves to be demanding guests at Stamford Bridge, Old Trafford and Anfield – and Alex McLeish's aesthetic probably does not have your average Villan chirping over his cornflakes come Saturday morning.
But at their most recent zenith, under Martin O'Neill, Villa were a ruthlessly effective counterattacking side built on a solid defence and with pace on the flanks. McLeish's reputation for keeping it tight precedes him and, after the disjointed farrago that was Gérard Houllier's reign, the burgeoning partnership between Agbonlahor and Bent is just one reason that fans of the club should consider whistling a Monty Python number under their breath.
"There is no reason why myself and Gabby cannot get in the England team together and it should help England that we play week in and week out together at club level," said Bent, of his team-mate's call-up for the friendlies against Spain and Sweden. "There is no doubt that Gabby is right on top of his game and he has really stepped forward and up to the mark this season." Agbonlahor, who won the last of his three England caps more than two years ago, has not only rediscovered his goalscoring form but his performances have gone a long way to making up for the shortfall in creativity occasioned by the departures of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, not to mention Charles N'Zogbia's underwhelming start to life at Villa Park.
Villa currently lie eighth, with two more points (and six more goals) from their 11 games than at the same point last year – albeit that start was undermined by the shock resignation of O'Neill and then the baton passing from Kevin McDonald to Houllier. That may be a glass-half-full way of looking at things – and terrace PMA is often rarer than a decent moustache on a Movember fundraiser – but it is more constructive, say, than grousing about your manager's former allegiances. What is certain is that after away trips to Tottenham and Swansea this month, December will be crucial in deciding the direction of Villa's season, as McLeish's side host Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. They will certainly need the fans at their backs, not on their backs, then. AG

We have to remember that The Guardian was once based in Manchester, and now in London. As such it has good coverage of the North West i.e. The Pool and manure, and the London teams, but that's it.

Saw this article earlier and thought it was a bit strange - why Villa and why now? As someone else has pointed out on the original fickle fans article, the picture of an empty stadium is (apparently) from one of the youth Champions League games, and is of the away end. I don't think there's any special bias against Villa but this is pretty lazy journalism.
Also I've never seen a good winger described as a 'Wide-Boy' before - bit of a cheap/baseless dig?
-
Said it before, say it again, the bindippers are us from about 3 seasons ago
Wealthy american owner, had to spend way over the odds for good'ish players to persuade them to join and because the clubs they were leaving knew they had cash to burn, a stack of ok players who look good on paper and if you say their names quickly, it sounds quite impressive but who don't really stand up that well to individual scrutiny and who, with the odd exception, will never make it in a Sky 4 team. Their results mirror us from that period too in that they win more than they lose but are never quite good enough to escape the thought that a turkey of a result is just around the next corner. Suarez will go as soon as anyone decent comes in for him, and like us, the process starts all over again but in an ever decreasing spiral. Glad they like Downing so much though, I could have told them all that for far less than £20m....
-

He'll have do do a lot, lot more to be considered as a quarter of the player that Dion was.

To be honest i dont actually argue with most of that - the original point is the way they fawn over King Kenny whilst deriding everyone else who is of similar ilk - and i do qualify us as being the same level as Liverpool apart from world wide support
Not sure if this is true but i heard a stat recently that said this season we yet again have the honour of being the team that has dropped most points from winning positions - and if we had held on we would have had an extra 12 points and be 3/4th
Interesting we had the same stat in MON's first season so i guess its not a bad place to steadily start
I can actually see this team getting stronger and better as the season goes on
-
There's been a few grumbles from the Kopites about Mr Downing.
KOPITES ARE GOBSHITES!
I read a few of their forums when they signed DJ Stew and they seemed to think that they had signed Messi.
One even posted that he had scored 17 goals for us!?!
Downing is a slightly above average player at best and 20 million was nothing short of a miracle
Very good comparison of King Kenny to MON
Oh and our Stevie gets some dirt in a cut and is in plaster for a month with an "infection"? yeah right

A recent article in the paper on the Electric Cinema also painted a lovely picture of Birmingham; how they were shocked to find a bit of culture in such a dirge hole of a city.

I wonder if they heard the 5T0KE fans calling for Tony Pulis head during the Bolton game on Sunday. It may only have been a few of them but thats all it takes, and if it had been us calling for the managers head (what possible reason would we have for that?) we would have been slaughtered for it. When you consider all thast Pulis has done for them, that makes them the most fickle bunch I have known
-

I count it as 8 points dropped from winning positions (against Newcastle, QPR, West Brom and Sunderland) with 4 points gained from losing positions (coming back twice to draw at Everton, and coming from behind to beat Norwich).
But it as an affliction that as you say, has dogged us for a while. Last season I think our record for giving up leads was the worst. Remember this time last season when our good work against Fulham and ManUre was undone by the late concession of equalisers?
-
Downing is a pretty solid midfielder, but he's certainly not worth anything near £20 million.
-
I wonder how many Guardian journalists have to pay £40 for their match ticket?
My thoughts exactly.
Where has this modern obsession with ranking fans come from? Turn on the TV or radio (or even visit a messageboard) and it's 'Wolves fans bad', 'Villa fans bad', 'Norwich fans good' ad nauseum.
If we are nothing more than TV extras, then I think we should at least get paid to cheer and clap.
-
The Daily Mirror plumbed new depths of Villa hating today. I thought with their line up of Oliver Holt, James Nursey and Savage their paranoid hatred of Aston Villa had got about as far as it could get but this morning Derek McGovern writes and I quote "Darren Bent is 1-5 with Hills to start against the World and European champions, while Gabriel Agbonlahor is 2-5. Yet, if they were Spanish neither man would be allowed anywhere near a Spain international - not even as fans." How's that for balanced, objective reporting? McGovern makes John Terry's alleged opinion of Anton Ferdinand seem positively good natured.
All this venom aimed at Bent and Agbonlahor to big up Wayne Rooney and how vital he is to England in international tournaments. Yes, the very same Rooney who uses prostitutes, fucks and blinds into TV microphones, gets himself red carded against Montenegro, slags off England fans and did absolutely fuck all in the last international tournament.

That is outrageous. Frankly it's pretty pitiful and ill informed journalism as well.

Look at it logically rather than with your "Everyone hates Villa" hat on and he's right, Spain would never pick Gabby or Benty, they have a wealth of talent at their disposal, and as much as I love the both of them, they would not get anywhere near a Spain squad. Bent or Villa? Gabby or Messi?
It's more a comment on the paucity of English talent than an anti-Villa tirade I think.

Messi plays for Argentina, but I agree with your post.

McGovern makes John Terry's alleged opinion of Anton Ferdinand seem positively good natured.

the Mcgovern column in the Mirror is a piss take from start to finish, by that i mean he takes the pee out of everybody not just Villa, in fact his best stuff is about the top clubs he's a bit like the frankie Boyle of sports journalism where he sails pretty close to the wind,
i wouldnt take that bit about Bent and Gabby to seriously as his whole column is tongue in cheek

It is nothing about whether Darren or Gabby would get into the Spain side. It is a cheap shot and personally and gratuitously insulting to the players concerned. Later in the same piece he writes that Sandra Redknapp would be a better selection than Darren Bent for England. And please do not tell me that I have no sense of humour I am not in the mood to provide a target for contradiction for the sake of contradiction.

Precisely whether Gabby or Bent would be in the squad for Spain or not, it's the disrespect in the article that's the problem. I wonder if the same would be written about Danny Welbeck? who is not as good as both the two above.

yep, but it is written as a joke column, and should be read as such

I have a theory. Are the Guardian anti us because Cameron is a fan and because the future King is a fan. It might not be the case but if you were a writer, even a sports writer for such a publication there's a good chance that you are anti tory and anti monarchy.
Anyway, today I have heard our club mentioned quite a lot today on the radio. radio 2 specifically. The winner of Popmaster was a Villa fan from Stirchley. Then, in the afternoon Jeremy Vine had a guest on whose son was killed some years ago in Basra Iraq, a big Villa fan who by all accounts as Sargent made all his men watch the Villa when he picked their game up on TV. Vine even played the 'Bells are Ringing', it didn't sound crap and I'm not ashamed to admit in the context it was quite moving. Then this evening on radio 5 Cameron and Wills were announced as two Villa fans who helped FIFA change their mind.
They'll still write shit about us at any given opportunity in the future but today was a good day.

The Guardian aren't anti-Villa any more than they are anti any other club.

No, they are. They used to be based in Manchester and now they're in London.
As someone who has visited both cities, I can confirm that everyone who lives in either city does nothing but rock back and forth, foaming at the mouth with jealousy about Aston Villa in particular, and Birmingham generally.
They've never forgiven us for our meek, docile mediocrity.

I think everyone knows the score. Any national newspaper is full of stories about the mancs, arsenal, chelsea liverpool because thats their reader base. they can say what they like about us because we're not that important in the big scheme of newspaper circulation, and frankly there's more manc chelsea, arsenal liverpool fans locally than there is villa or blose or wba or wolves - Walk through birmingham on any saturday and count the shirts. Personally i don't give a shit if some london based journo wants to ridicule Bent or Gabby. No doubt in a year or two's time he'll be thraping himself sore about them once they're wearing the right shirt.
