Pillock (http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10265~2505428,00.html)
-
Better he likes us than one of the usual suspects is the way I look at it.
-
"Well versed in Villa parlance" my arse. A while back I saw him doing an interview or something and he called us "the scarlet and blues".
-
With a bit of luck I won't catch any of his films any time soon.
-
Worth keeping a copy of Hank's letter ready for the next time someone slags off Nigel Kennedy's Villa supporting credentials. Compare and contrast.
-
Its a bit of harmless fun really. He's not actually a 'real' fan, so what?
-

I'm glad he's a Villa fan (however half hearted). Just a bit of harmless fun and a good bit of PR for the club. No need for the inverse snobbery.
-
So what? He's officially a better Villa fan than Black Country Villa.
And not only that but we don't have to read his self important moans on here. Doesn't seem so bad does he?

Yeah Legion you snob.. ;-)
-
Hanks couldīve picked a better season to come and watch us.
-
I note he's used, 'up the Villa' rather than writing 'three cheers for Aston Villa or whatever you Brits say'.
He's a fan. He's said so. He lives a long way away from Birmingham and doesn't get to games. There are people posting here who live nearer and don't get to games, me included. (There are people who post on here who don't get to games and live just down the road compared to me!) There are also people who, like Tom, live thousands of miles away, and describe themselves as Villa fans, with a history of attending or not and why not?
As it says on the intro page to this website, nobody is 'a better fan' than anybody else; here, on this site we all love the Villa. No problem, if Tom turns up to a match then he hopes we'll win. That's good enough for me. That's a fan!
-
Fair play to him I say. As PWS suggests, better us than them.
-
what we desperatley need is a big debate on what is a 'real' fan,
dont think its ever come up before, we could all post for days about how many games we have been to over so many years and try and work out who is a proper fan and who isnt, should be fun
-
I am all for an a list actor saying he is a Villa fan and wants to get to a game. As several have said already, rather it is us than anyone esle.

Yes, I'm a right snob. He's not a Villa fan. Never has been. All contrived soundbites.
-
He has chosen Villa over all the other English clubs... that's OK isn't it?
-
Brian Clough? (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2057554/Tom-Hanks-keen-attend-Aston-Villa-game.html?ito=feeds-newsxml)
-
Perhaps that was sarcasm...
-
I get the feeling that every so often his PA opens another letter and thinks "Jeez, not that soccer club AGAIN! I wish they'd leave us alone."
-
Well I've no problem with it whatsoever. Never that keen on him as an actor so at least he has this going for him.
-
Hollywood A-lister who supports Aston Villa?
Sounds great to me ;)
-
I don't have a problem with it to be honest. Better us than one of the others as others have said. It's not as though he is mouthing of in the press each week about us trying to sound like he attends week in week out.
-
There was an article in The Sunday Independent Review about Lee Child last Sunday. He's just knocked Jk Rowling off top spot of the best seller charts. I haven't read any of his books (or hers for that matter... and in all truth have no inkling to read hers). He is a Villa fan, a big Villa fan, still worries about their 'troubles' from his palatial Manhattan home as the article put it. It also innocently states he's made enough from his books to buy the club, that's Journalists for you.
I don't mind Hanks being associated with us, in fact, I quite like it. We could do with some positivity at the moment and his message is a sort of.

Shimmy shimmy coco pop
Shimmy shimmy rock
-
I'm really struggling to see why some have a problem with him saying he is a villa fan.
-
Meh.
-
No harm in it really!
-

Is the correct answer.
-
Isn't Michael Palin a Villa fan as well? There's 2 empty seats every home game.
-
Legion I have 2 questions...
1) Why is he a pillock ?
2) What in your opinion, are the credentials for being a Villa fan ? I thought that as long as you had some affection for the club, for whatever reason, then that was good enough to call yourself a fan but maybe I am wrong. I just want to make sure I really am a Villa fan before I tell anyone else
-
Michael Palin isn't a Villa fan, he's a very naughty boy who supports a team named after a day of the week.
As for Tom Hanks, he's never seen the Villa play and I've never seen any of his films so that's me and him sorted.
As long as he keeps on walking along red carpets in front of the worlds media holding a Villa scarf above his head he'll do for me.
If you read this Tom, when you book your ticket at Villa Park make sure it's in L1 and we'll teach you some of our songs.
-
Before the seasons out there will be plently of times I'd rather be stuck on that desert island with him than sitting in the Holte.
-
Isn't Michael Palin a Villa fan as well?
That's a new one on me. I'm sure I've heard him in the past mention one or other of the Sheffield clubs.
-
Sorry, should have known that about Palin (Hangs head in shame)
To make up for it, I have waved my John Terry at Eric Clapton for being a baggie
-
made some good films to, IMO
-
He comes across as being a really intelligent man when interviewed So it's only natural he'd choose the Villa.
-
Aston Villa has a long and distinguished history as a founding member of the football league. We really should be a bit more choosy about who we allow in to support us.
It is high time we introduced some sort of membership system if people are going to support us, much like the better class golf clubs have if you want to join.
Requirement should be a nomination by an existing member, two references by respected members of the community, then an interview before the fan membership committee before acceptance is even considered.
I have supported our club for many many years and I dont just want any riff-raff turning up. Sniff sniff.

Abergavenny Thursdays?
-

Agreed. Green Mile and Saving Private Ryan are among my favourites
-
Road to Perdition was alright too
sums Villa up at the moment
-
His favourite player is probably Heskey after starring alongside him in The Green Mile.
-
Michael Palin is a Sheffield Wednesday fan, I think he mentioned it a few times on one of his travel shows.
-
I was of the beleif he was a Sheff U fan but by all accounts he follows both Sheffield Clubs. A bit like, well, nobody else realy.
-
Can't we just be pleased that a major Hollywood Movie star wants us to win football matches above everyone else, that he mentions us frequently, Mc Grath knows it's not like he needs us for publicity is it.
It's the same with the slagging that Prince William gets on here. And yes, whoever said it was 'inverted snobbery' got it dead right imo.
-

The Burbs was great.
A story of creepy neighbours who are up to no good and keep there yard in shit state.
Now where does that remind me of...?
-
Lee. You're getting very good at this 'What can I stir them up with next?'
-
Hanks gets to Villa Park about as often as some of his fiercest critics.
Live n let live ffs.

This.
