In the Football League alone there are:
15 Uniteds - Carlisle, Colchester, Hartlepool, Hereford, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Peterbrough, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Sheffield, Southend, Torquay and West Ham
12 Citys - Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Exeter, Hull, Leicester, Manchester, Norwich, Stoke and Swansea
10 Towns - Aldershot, Cheltenham, Crawley, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Macclesfield, Northampton, Shrewsbury, Swindon and Yeovil
4 Rovers - Blackburn, Bristol, Doncaster and Tranmere
3 Albions - Brighton & Hove, Burton and West Bromwich
3 Athletics - Charlton, Oldham and Wigan
3 Wanderers - Bolton, Wolverhampton and Wycombe
2 Countys - Derby and Notts
But there is only one Villa ;)
However does anyone know if we are the only Villa in the country?
Are there are Villas in non-league football?
Also where does the name "Villa" come from and what does it actually mean?
-
There's Pelsall, Askern and the one who lost in the cup on Saturday. The origin of the name Aston Villa is explained in the current H&V.
-
There will always be only one 'Villa'
-
Pine Villa are now called Oldham Athletic I think.
-
I think there is a team in the NE called Ashton Villa too - a nice tribute in my eyes.
-
I can only think of a few clubs with unique names: Port Vale, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Crewe Alexandra, MK Dons . Anyone think of anymore? Probably a few in Scotland
-
Stanway Villa
-
Does Villareal count?
-
There is, or used to be, a team called Bulwell Forest Villa, I think.
-
Euxton Villa, up North just south of Preston

Hamilton Academical, Iverness Caledonian Thistle
-
What about that French band ? ;)
-
there was a TV programme called Crapstone Villa once. Always wondered if it was a dig at the name of our club! Bastards.
-
There's a couple of local clubs down the south that were started up by a villa and villa on the end.
-
Hanworth Villa just got knocked out of the FA Cup. If they'd beaten AFC Totton in the 4th Qualifying Round, they'd have been in the 1st round of the FA Cup.
Pelsall Villa are probably the best known other Villa otherwise.
-
You may all recall in a bizarre twist of concidence, John Robson rocked up to manage Pelsall Villa at some point in the early 80's. I've still got his autograph in green felt pen!

Hamilton Academical, Iverness Caledonian Thistle
There's also Partick Thistle in Scotland.
And don't forget Accrington Stanley. Accrington is the town and one of the founders of the league. 'Stanley' is from a working men's club in Accrington who were originally - wait for it - Stanley Villa!
-
I came across a Park Villa in Ireland somewhere once but can't remember if they are like a non league club or if it was just an under-age thing. I'll try to find out.

Isn't their official name still something like Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic Football Club? They just use AFC Bournemouth as a trade name as it's a bit less of a mouthful?
-
Coombs Wood Villa

Yes that is correct. AFC was invented in 1972 by John Bond ...after we beat them in that famous game at VP!
-
Wollescote Villa.
Not sure if they're still around.

-
(Plymouth) Argyle is unique too.
Preston North End (although there's Glossop NE in the non-league),Leyton Orient and (spit) MK Dons.
-
There's a Villa Park in The Hague, Holland.
There's Villa Aston FC in Mauritius.
-
Sevilla FC.
Indeed I believe they named the city after us.
-
As you surely know, Villa is a Latin and now an Italian name as well, so in Italy there are lots of villages, and consequently teams, named: Villa.

Hardly original in the strictest sense.

I went to Elburton Villa's ground yesterday.

Also where does the name "Villa" come from and what does it actually mean?
Okay so it comes from Villa Road/Villa Cross in Handsworth/Lozells.
There was/is a church caled Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel which was known as Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel (according to Wiki.)
I think this is now the George Street New Testament Church of God.
The sad thing is that most people in Handsworth/Lozells don't even support Villa (gloryhunters) even though they have such a famous and magnificent club founded in their area on their doorstep :(
-
No it doesn't.
-
There is Abbey Villa, a junior club in Northern Ireland.
-
Also in Hopkinton and Uxbridge

Aston Villa FC< was founded in March, 1874. It began as an off-shoot of the nearby Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel, which was established in 1850. The origin of the name derives from the area that contained a house of the name Aston Villa that was built in the 1700s, a 'villa' being a type of house. 'Aston' is the name of an ancient area which was adjacent to Birmingham and is now part of Birmingham. The house gave its name to the district where the Chapel was built.
There was no specific founder of the club. The football club has its origins in The Aston Villa Wesleyan Chapel Cricket Club, which had been started two years previously (1872). The "Aston Villa" name, however, is linked to the Chapel which was started years before, and not just to the sporting activities, and that (in turn) was named after a local Georgian house, so the club's name is truly ancient in comparison to other football clubs.
