From Interview with Ron Saunders (http://www.heroesandvillains.info/forumv3/index.php?topic=45121.0):
I always thought it would be perfect to have in the Villa Park tunnel, as Liverpool have 'This is Anfield', a sign that reads 'The Full Ron Saunders'.
'The Full Ron Saunders'. That's a great idea. Could we get a campaign going or have it mentioned somewhere? Would be in keeping with all the banners that were introduced. We need to make VP a fortress.
Your thoughts?
-
As I said I think it's an idea. It's something that would speak to our players, and their opponents, about our proud history. it would shout 'We have been winners, we have been the very best in Europe, go out there, give the cause 110% and hockey this lot into oblivion'.
Also, unlike the 'bells are ringing' campaign, there is little scope for this to be messed up from the other end. All we want is the quote in the tunnel. It would be more effective than the current, rather bland, 'this is Aston Villa'.
-
I'm afraid most players would say "Who?"

Totally agree.

Then they need educating.
-
How about getting Ron in to give Alex a helping hand?
One things for sure he'd take no s**t from these big time charlies!!
-
Just put a picture of him up - staring - would motivate me!

"Do you want to bet against us?"

That's kind of the point, Ross. If there's one thing Villa fans expect from the team is that each player gives 110%. We can be very forgiving if a player lacks technical finesse but not giving everything you've got for 90 minutes is unforgiveable. Once players realise that and by touching the sign are making 'a promise' to go out there and give their all, it's a timely reminder that they're playing for a great, historical club where the greatest of heights have been reached by giving 110% effort.
-
Can we name a stand after Ron? Witton End or Witton Lane either would do.
-
For starters (https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/110-The-Full-Ron-Saunders/133719960066291)
-
Yes :) to sign and stand :) and he should replace Alex McLeish as manager. :)
-
Not sure I'd go for it if I was the current manager.
And if I was a current player it wouldn't make any difference to how I played.

I was wondering if it might be possible to get him in for a chat with the squad... strictly informal, obviously.
-
No one should under estimate what he did for our club, he should be given the recognition he deserves while he is still alive.
-
agreed

Spot on, agree 110%
-
Not too sure about a sign in the tunnel. As someone has already said it probably wouldn't resonate with today's players.
We can't really push to have the Witton Lane renamed after him because the bloke who it was named after is still alive. As for the Witton End, would you want to have a stand that's earmarked for demolition ( sometime in the near future) named after the great man?
How about "The Holte End Saunders Stand" or "The Ron Saunders Holte End"?
Yes I can see all the "heretic how dare you" posts coming from this but it's worth thinking about. And by the way apart from Mr. McGregor, Ron Saunders is the only other persons name I'd like to see associated with the Holte End.

Ramsay is at least as deserving, and I'd say Rinder too.
-
We could line the tunnel with great quotes. The full Ron Saunders, Rinder about nothing but the best being acceptable for us etc.

'Do you want to bet against us?' being the final one? Or 'This is the Aston Villa football club, and it deserves nothing short of the best.'?
-

Absolutely!
He put a fantastic team together on a budget and made them (almost) invincible.
I consider myself lucky to have been alive to have witnessed it, wallowed in it and still be happy and proud thinking about some of the best times in the club's history.
Ron Saunders. Legend.
-
That's right Lee. Have a montage that builds up to the final one saying what we expect of the players.
-
I'm afraid most players would say "Who?"
Sadly you are right.
In fact I bet most players have to look at the name on their shirt to remember who they are actually playing for nowadays, it means that little to them.
-

Sounds good to me. Hope the club pick up on this.

Fantastic idea. Sounds quite inspirational actually.

Yes.
-
See above. it might be quite nice to hit both teams with some history. Its just that ours would be used to it. Remind all the buggers that play at Villa Park of our importance.
-
From my somewhat limited knowledge of our early years i've always felt the role of Rinder is under appreciated. Does anyone know if there is any kind of tribute to him in VP?
-
Nothing worthwhile.
-
Update: The club really like the idea and are actively looking at implementing something. It will probably not be in the tunnel though, more likely in one of the concourses or the players areas.
-
Thanks for the update Legion. Surprised it wouldn't be in the tunnel though. That's where it'd have a real impact.

That's the quote for me.
Maybe with something from McGregor there, too.

There isn’t a lot of room in the tunnel as it is largely full with interview backdrop boards.

To replace the 'This is Aston Villa' on the actual tunnel under the crest? Fair play to them for getting back to us anyway. Thanks too for your response and the efforts you have made.

In an ideal world this is what needs to be done. Whatever we put up needs to go in the tunnel right before the players go on the pitch otherwise it will lose its impact. It's a great effort, though, regardless of what goes up and where.

The interview backdrops are in a side room off the tunnel as is the room where the 2 managers socialise/have drinks/nibbles and watch the other results on TV. Do the tour and you will see for yourselves.

There are some interview backdrops in the tunnel as well.
-
Thanks for the update Legion. It's nice to know that the club are taking notice.
If as the club says there isn't the space in the tunnel for the quotes can I suggest that the visitors dressing room has a giant Villa badge on one wall with "Do You Want To Bet Against Us?" underneath.
-
I see Troy Eccles has posted on the facebook page - has he been banned from here?
-
Could there be room for NFL style of hall of fame in Villa Park ie Gerry Hitchens and co.
Let say there is 100 players deserve it and have we got space to put all those name up
