Is it time for a change? Week after week we are giving away sloppy goals, look at yesterday, the smallest man on the pitch scores a header in the 6 yard box. Mcleish said before the Albion match he would make changes if they failed to defend. They didn't they didn't lose their place again yesterday they didn't.
Will they play next week? I bet they do.
Is it time for Clark Cuellar Herd & warnock?
-
I'd definitely get Cuellar into the team, and Herd moved to Right back.
Not too sure that Clark would help our set piece problems too much.
-
Honest question, if Cuellar is as good a centre half as a few on here seem to think, why is he still sat on our bench? My own opinion is that he's solid, dependable and won't let you down too often. So why is that none of the managers (inc the one who bought him) trusts him at centre half for more than a game or two?
-
Other than set pieces they're defending well (Man City aside). There's clearly an issue now with corners in particular but I'm struggling to work out why as up until the last three games it hadn't been a problem.
Cuellar for Collins would be the one I'd consider but I'm not sure it as simple as that.
-
No idea Rigadon. I cannot honestly think of a bad game Cuellar has had at centre half for us. Granted his distribution isn't the best, but its no worse than Collins.
-
Maybe it's something to do with the fact that centre halves tend to be about partnerships. Maybe he doesn't gel well? I don't think we'll see any defensive changes anytime soon.
-
I'd get Collins out of the team like a bullet, he doesn't give us anything imo. He dives into tackles, gets turned far too easily, mis-judges the flight of the ball and keeps trying to hit the ball up to bent to header, giving the ball away every time. Carlos doesn't have the presence of Collins, but his judgment, reading the game and not diving into tackles means he waits for the opportune moment to tackle. I haven't seen him play a bad game.
I'd keep Dunne in, so long as he behaves well, repeats of last season can't be tolerated
-
I'd personally like to see Clark and Cuellar start a game, if anything just to light a fire under Dunne and Collins asses. The defence has been a problem for a while, there was all that talk of MON's zonal system and GH saying he wouldn't rock the boat with it until he got to pre season, then he left and now it doesn't look like Eck wants to change it either.
Back in my playing days, it was go man to man, don't let them goal side, but give them about a foot of space so they can't turn you. That was the basic rule and it worked pretty well.
-
I believe it's more to do with defensive tactics than personnel. The two CBs are regarded as being good in the air so it makes no sense to be shit a set pieces. I still can't work out if we man mark or do zones and I think the players are unsure too by the looks of it. Needs a shake up but I don't think Cuellar or Clark are going to transform us into clean sheet specialists.
-
Got to bring Cuellar back into the team. Good in the air and a great tackler of the ball.
Really annoyed with Mcleish comments when he congratulated Larsson for a great free kick "i tought him well" he said!
Well he wants to teah the defence how to defend against a 5 foot 6 striker! Back to the O'leary days of congratulating opposition players, never heard O'neil doing that!
10 games in and he still doesn't know his best midfield, Heskey just doesn't look right doing a job in there.
Got to sort it out Mr Mcleish, if you lose the remainder of the fans who are still backing you then your days will be numbered.
-

As mentioned by Mat Kendrick on Twitter, the inclusion of Heskey in midfield probably says more about McLeish's opinion of Ireland than his opinion of Heskey. Maybe he's coming to the same conclusion as Mancini, Houllier and (possibly) Pardew.

If I could second guess managers I would, I can't think of another manager that would play Heskey and Hutton in our team.

So you've already forgot that MON and Houllier both picked Heskey. I'd get yourself down the doctors as your memory is fucked.
-
Heskey did some good things yesterday, but also gave the ball away a lot, one of which led to their first goal i think. The fancy back flick he tried in the last minute in the middle of the pitch was stupid, and not what a man of his experience should be doing.
As for the defence, the one i'd leave out if i could would be Warnock. I wonder if Clark would be any beter there
.

You can't blame him for wanting to block out those two.

Cuellar and Dunne was a good combo in the run up to xmas 2009.
I'd get Carlos back in at RB instead of Hutton tbh. I'd also have Clark alongside Dunne.
-
I've a theory on why we can't defend set pieces.
Has anyone else noticed our poor rate at crosses? Either from corners or free kicks the ratio is poor to say the least.
Therefore if we have trouble delivering crosses how on earth are we supposed to practice defending them?
Just a thought :-)
Last season I would have liked to have seen Collins and Cuella, as Dunne was having a hard time. This season it's Dunne who's playing well with Collins seeming to struggle. Let's see Dunne and Cuella have a go together. Cuella and Clark played a couple of games together last season and looked pretty good, if I remember rightly.
One thing's for sure, you can't keep changing the defence willy nilly. The defence work as a unit so the more you tinker the more problems you'll have.
I think Herd has found himself a niche in the team as the defensive midfielder, he's looked good in the 2 games he's played there.
-
perhaps the worlds best defender should play at the back , THE ONE AND ONLY EMILE HESKEY
-
I have always thought that Dunne was a hard working player and what he lacked in skill, he made up with effort. He would put his head and body in where it hurt. Throughout his career, however, he has always been prone to making that one crucial error in a game.
I am starting to see more and more that he is getting caught flat-footed when the ball comes into the penalty area, particulary from the sides. He still looks ok when the ball comes from the way he is facing. If you look at a lot of the goals we have conceeded from set-pieces, it is Dunne that is left with no opposition player near him. They have either made a decoy run off him or the player he should have been marking steals a yard on him to score.
The problem is that I do not think Collins is strong enough or good enough to carry Clark for a few games until he gets up to speed with the position.

Well, IMO Hutton has to be the worst player we have signed in years!! Just about at fault in evry goal we have conceded and could have had loads of pens against him for hand balls. Generally cant run, cant tackle, gets turned constantly every team sees the right side of the defence as our weak spot! Cuellar, Clark or Herd for me at RB. The take either Dunne or Collins out of CB and put in Cuellar or Clark either just to shake things up.
Now the bigger problem Mr Bent!! Doing nothing and missing sitters. Sorry this just cant continue. He is a luxury player who is there to finish moves if he doesnt do that he is a waste of space. After Herd went off we were down to 9 as Bent was anonymous McLeish should have taken him off at half time and played Gabby up front where he should play every week. The Mailman? at present best thing he could do is pack his bags and get on his bike!! New striker in Jan or the summer and lets try and cash in on him, we might get 3 mil if were lucky.
Unfortunately all the HUGE errors Houllier made (there are too many to mention) are coming back to haunt us now. Big Eck needs to find the players that are hungry like Herd not lazy overpaid has beens like Bent.

Bent a "has been"?
Are you serious? The reason he "does nothing" is because he does one thing - scores goals - and we're not getting him the ball. I also don't see how a player you yourself describe as there to finish off moves is a luxury player.
If we hadn't signed Bent, we'd be in the championship now, no two ways about it.
-
Sell Bent for 3 million? And we'll be lucky to get that much for him?

Troll alert..
It's not just set pieces the first goal was terrible as well, if someone had tracked wickham he wouldnt have got a shot in.

Bump
I thought mcleish was the man to sort the defence? Did anyone see Dunne go over to him and have a go? Why are we still zonal marking? We always in a line marking space rather than the man?
-
Clark left back, Herd right back, Cuellar for Collins has to happen ASAP. We have alternatives, and that back 4 would be much better than the clowns in there.
Petrov back into holding midfield, Bannan in front, NZogbia and Albrighton wide with Gabby and Bent up top please.
-
Yeah but man marking or zonal? Has to be man for me
-
The midfield is our biggest problem not the defence, they've tightened up the last 2 games and looked far more solid.

well he probably would finish off moves , but thee ain't any , we created nothing yesterday , bent is the last of the problems .I'm afraid some of stuff your saying is trips

Do you not think Collins is missing the midfield by just pumping it down the pitch?
-
Did anybody in the trinity hear what Dunne said to McLeish?
