Went to see him at a sportsman's evening in Rugeley on Monday, seems a nice bloke.
Could do with him having a chat with our Barry I reckon along the lines of 'don't do what I did off the pitch, do it on the pitch'
What did you think of him as a player?

As a player I loved the bloke, he's one of the last people i'd want to have a word with wee Barry though.

I have met Merse socially, and a thoroughly nice bloke he was, friendly, and happy to chat.
Asking him to advise Barry Bannan would be like asking Vince Cable to advise on VAT matters.
-
I really like Merson I think he his a nice bloke top player.

We got a couple of magical seasons out of him. He really entertained us.

His last minute skill in one of the worst Everton Villa matches I have seen was tremendous. And although Benni Carbone got the goals, Merson pretty much won us the FA cup match against Leeds in 2000. It's just a shame he couldn't conjure the same magic in the final.

One of my favourite players down the Villa a class act. Also, he loves us.

The most over-rated player I have ever seen.

Even more than Ginola?

At Villa, definitely. Nobody rated Ginola here, but Merson has been elevated to icon status based on some good performances in ordinary games and going missing in the big ones.

Great performance against Leeds in the cup, a great goal against Watford on Sir Graham's return and he was the reason we came from two behind to beat Coventry and send them down. Ginola got the credit from the press on the basis that he came on as sub when we were losing two nil and Merson had been on from the start. Also admits in his book that one of his ways of relaxing in his room before a game was by 'Waxing the dolphin'. I'd never heard it called that before.

i wouldnt say most overated player ever,i wouldnt put him anywhere near the mcgrath, cowans, platt or yorke standard either.
but i would say he was 1 of the main reasons we got to the fa cup final in 2000 turning it on in the leeds & everton games but like dave said when we needed him most in the final he hid.

I thought I was only who had that view of him. How anyone considers him a legend is beyond me.

Ginola just wasn't bothered. Merse was and he stood out in a very mediocre team.

Nice to hear.

It wasn't until today I learned Paul Merson is older than Dalian Atkinson would have been by one day. Merson was 56 yesterday and Dalian would have been 56 today. Somehow I thought Merson was quite a bit older.

Dalian also in the news, in a nice way:
