My first prediction of a defeat this season. Let's hope it's as accurate as my prediction we would win at City.

And lets face it Sunderland are no task at this time, out of form, inconsistent, rumours around the manager.

can't see them not scoring in this one, still we should have enough for at least another draw. however a heavy defeat will completely bring the doom and gloom merchants out and Mcleish will be hung.

Can't see us losing this, watched Sunderland the other week and they where worse then we have ever been this season, I've only seen 1 team worse this far, although Bolton are having a good attempt at it.

Minimum draw, i think we will claw back some bonus points at the weekend.

Why do people still think N'Zogbia will score? He's been by far our worse player and that's saying something considering the majority of players who have been poor for us. He struggles bringing the ball forward let alone finding the net. No doubt this is the fault of the manager because he wasn't this bad at Wigan and Newcastle, even spells when he went missing.

I'm not sure about this tbh. Sunderland haven't been that great this season and they pratically have no decent strikers. We have to get something out of this game. I won't be surprised if we lose this match considering we have a manager who can't set up a team to get enough chances at home nevermind away. Then that will be 3 matches lost in a row and Norwich will be make or break for McLeish. Lose that and the negative chants will be so strong at Villa Park that the atmosphere when Houllier lost against Wolves at VP will seem like heaven.

If we lost to Sunderland and then went onto lose to Norwich with Spurs, Man Utd and Liverpool coming thick and fast McLiesh would be a fool to even consider turning up at the club for work..

Can't see it happening TBH.

I must have accidentally slipped into a parallel universe where the mighty Aston Villa once used to routinely collect an easy 3 points from an away fixture at Sunderland. Sorry but I dont think coming away from there with a point is depressing at all

Id go with

Given
Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Warnock
----Herd,---------Clark
----------Petrov--------------
Ireland, Bent, Gabby

Pressure will be on McLeish if we lose this. After the shit with Bannan this week, he needs a performance and a result. His reign hasnt kicked off yet at all. The only two games we have won have been at home to Blackburn and Wigan. A win at Sunderland would be very welcome indeed.

A final thing - No Emile fucking Heskey please

               Petrov
       Delph         Ireland

I think we'll take it. Though there will be a late scare.

Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Mr Diggles on October 26, 2011, 08:27:49 AM
Unfortunately I think this is the start of the long and rocky road to January, that's not me being incredibly downbeat (well, it is) because I just don't think we can compete against some of the better teams nor away from home. I honestly think we'll only pick up 7-10 points between now and the Swansea match in January.

So in that spirit, Sunderland will spawn a win, even though Villa put up a decent fight. Bent will not score and will be pilloried by the home fans. The lack of any creative spark in the midfield will cost us massively.

It's my 30th on Sunday and it was a straight choice between a weekend in brum and Sunderland on the lash or a weekend with wife and kids in London. I really didn't think i would opt for London but i have, so no doubt we will win 6-2. 2 down after 15 mins followed by the best football we have played for years. Bent to score 4 Gabby and Collins with the others.

3-1 defeat and Larsson to show why we should have signed him. Oh i forgot we got Jenas, yay.

Realistically we need to win both of our next two games with Swansea a, Spurs a, Man Utd h, Arsenal h, Bolton a, Liverpool h, Stoke a, Chelsea a coming up. The only one of those i could see us possibly winning is Bolton away.

Would be good to get Herd back in the team, looked promising in the midfield. Maybe not just him and Petrov in the centre, bit lightweight. Think Ireland will break his duck and turn in a top performance, other than that, Bendtner is nailed on to score against us, probably late on to prevent a victory....

Sunderland 1              Aston Villa 1
Bendtner (90+3)         Ireland (73)

Couple of beers after the game reflecting on a top day out and what a shame it is we had to watch the Villa in the middle.......!

I agree, but would throwing Ireland or Delph in improve it at the moment. Sunderland might play Gardner and Cattermole. They'd both be too strong for either of them, therefore Herd and Petrov would be better. Would putting Sidwell and Reo-Coker in there improve it? ;)

I sense a defeat sadly. To be honest, the most depressing thing about the Villa right now is the midfield. Putting aside the loss of Young and Downing on either flank, I look at our centre and there's no player I genuinely rate.
Petrovs had it.
Jenas is bobbins.
Delph isn't good enough.
Bannan isn't consistent enough and IMO has to play in front of a solid midfield 2 anyhow.
Ireland, as above.
Herd isn't good enough and it says it all that many are calling for him to play. That's what it's come to.

I think we'll get turned over personally.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Merv on October 27, 2011, 02:52:29 PM
Agree, Tom. Midfield's been significantly weakened over the last two seasons and even further in the summer - that area of the team completely neglected. We're really suffering now because of it, no wonder we can't get a foothold in games. Chuck in the fact that Bannan's not available for the Sunderland game and we're light there. Jenas supposedly training today but the game's probably too soon for him.

Personally, I think I'd just go for a solid three v Sunderland - Clark, Delph, Herd - to combat the likes of Cattermole (whoever thinks Hutton plays rough, watch this guy) and keep things tight and us in the game. Albrighton-Bent-Gabby as a front three.

I am gutted as i was thinking about the team for Sunderland that i would prefer Herd in the midfield to Nzogbia !! As a team we are playing at about 60% of individuals real potential. Ireland barely average, Bent limited service leading to not expecting passes so lacking sharpness and Nzogbia is on another planet. Where is the management and coaching ?? Not confident about any points for this :-(

Well, this thread is a bit pessimistic, isn't it?  I find it strange that some people were genuinely thinking we'd get something at Man City, which was after a win and decent performance against Wigan, yet lose the last game and we're no match for Sunderland.  What's that 'F' word again?

Difficult one to call. You never know what you're going to get with Sunderland, but they are one of those teams I always feel you can get a result against.

Then again, they beat us home and away last season.

I've got a feeling it'll be a rather dismal 1-1 draw, Larsson scoring for them.

Troublesome game this one. You don't want to play a team who has just 'turned a corner'. Actually at the moment, I don't want us to play anyone. Can we use FIFA 12 to just generate a result?

Disagree, we'd get totally overrun in midfield, barely have the ball all game (as usual), and even when we do get it we'll have no options in centre midfield, meaning passing back to Collins who boofs the ball to the opposition.

I think H&V should approach Sunderland about the use of its name.

----------------Given------------------
-Hutton-Collins-Dunne-Warnock-
------------Herd--Petrov-------------
---------------Ireland-----------------
-------N'Zogbia----Agbonlahor-----
-----------------Bent-------------------

Think N'Zogbia will perform, as you may remember Sunderland wanted him in the Summer. Time for Ireland to continue improving, other than that it seems the team picks itself, the squad is that small. Think we will see Heskey though. They've got Gardner, Bendtner and Larsson, all of whom I would not be surprised to see score, just because it's sods law. The optimist in me says 2-1 but now thinking a 2-2 draw is probably the best we'll get. Looking forward to it all the same.

Oh I don't know. We were robbed by these twice last year with Heskey missing a sitter at home and Dunne doing what he does better than anyone else at the Stadium of Light. Then again we mugged em 3 times the year before.
I'm just going to have a few beers, enjoy the day out and relax.
Lol Like the result doesn't matter. Us to win....somehow...I don't care how.

I don't know if I am kidding myself, wouldn't be the first time, but I think we will win tomorrow and don't care if it's pretty or not. We need to give Darren the service he needs to get the goals we demand of him, and we need to stop the opposition over running us in midfeld.
No idea on team, but Charlie really must start enjoying his football, he plays like he has forgotten all that made us buy him and looks dejected. Can Albrighton turn it round? And if Steven Ireland is ever going to make it we need to give him a run in the side.
Good luck lads, just make my week a happier one!

A modest improvement on recent weeks: 1-1 with Bent scoring on his return to the Stadium of Light.

This is the sort of game that shows where we're going - after a couple of defeats and off field shenanigans, they either regroup and deliver the goods or... not.
Hopefully the former but with Villa it's hard to get enthusiastic!

So Mcleish has admitted he tried to sign Seb Larssen... What a dick admitting that just before we play them.

I was really impressed with Herd before his Red, he looks a battler we've missed in midfield, I am actually quite confident of a win today.

0-2 Gabby, Bent

I want to say a win, and I want bent to net it. But its heading for a 1 1 draw I think. Gabby gives us the lead, we sit back, they score and they get a few chances to win it. We come away lucky with a point

I really don't get you people who are seize on every little thing to abuse our manager. It makes no difference to anything that he's said he tried to sign him.

Sunderland 2 (Larsson pen 45+2, C. Gardner 90+6)
Villa 1 (Bent 23, Bent missed pen 88)

It's been that sort of month.

Other than, of course, begging the question why, having worked with McLeish once, Larsson would choose to relocate 200 miles away above working with him again...

McLeish explained why, the deal with Sunderland was all but done by the time he was appointed at Villa.

It's dull and depressing up here in Newcastle (no doubt it'll be the same when we get to sunderland).  I hope my mood is better than the weather come 5 pm.

0-4. Collins 29, Agbonlahor 64, 70, Bent pen 89.
No not Bent as we will be 3-0 up by the time this last min penalty is awarded Gabby will take it to get his hat-trick unless of course he is replaced straight after his second by Heskey.

Expecting a Villa win is like doing the lottery. You have the winning ticket up til the moment the balls are drawn!
Villa have to have the winning no's today! Must have!?

Sky showing the stat, Villa have won only 1 of their last 8 games in all competitions.

If we dont play well today, AM out anyone?

As long as we don't end up lower than 4th from bottom then AM ain't going nowhere. He is a holding action in a faustian pact with Randy that essentially ignores the needs and wants of the fans.
Randy will do nothing until he sorts his fortunes out in the US!
Meantime spend every Saturday in the depths of anticpatory misery awaiting the next last minute defeat or out and out trouncing!
We have to make do with what we've got for the duration of this season at least.
Still I can't hope for a win, and always do, and when they do I am happy! But..But But!?
It is all about money now..you could see it with ex-players during the ManCity game..They laid off us out of pity.
What a state we have ended up in eh?

No, he won't unless it gets really, really bad (i.e. relegation)!
