Herd starts? interesting. Come on you Villa boys.

Herd in centre mid possibly? a 4-2-3-1 with Gabby and Nzogbia wide, Bannan in behind Bent.  Hopefully anyway.

I quite like that team. Hopefully, his place means that N'Zog has impressed in training.

I take it Delph is injured rather than completely dropped.

I sense the influence of Kevin MacDonald with the selection of Herd. Hopefully KMac's influence will see us passing the ball too.

That team has potentially got a good balance to it as it can work as a 4231, 433 or as a 442 with Gabby drifting wide to the side of the other side of the pitch compared to Nzogbia.

HUGE game for Herd though as there is no obvious replacement on the bench.

huge game for nzogbia this.

both teams going with two up front but neither team has a midfielder capable of getting hold of the ball. id expect a lot of ball hit direct to the frontmen by both teams.

good luck to chris herd in midfield. definitely mobile and combative enough anyway

Post by: Dave on October 22, 2011, 02:58:45 PM
neither team has a midfielder capable of getting hold of the ball.
Mulumbu is one of their best players and he is more or less in the team to do nothing but the above.

Herd's definately the type of player you want in a local derby. He certainly knows how to mix it up. Just hope he doesn't go over the top and get himself sent off.

That's not Gabby's problem. It was a foul in the box. Nothing more to it than that.

It's the linesman's colossal fuck-up.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v The Throstles Match Thread
Post by: Ger Regan on October 22, 2011, 03:43:42 PM
Ok, they replayed it there and he clipped someone in the box, so a penalty was probably deserved, but he in no way denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. The red is utterly undeserved.

Post by: Smithy on October 22, 2011, 03:44:37 PM
WTF - Someone please explain to me the reason for the red card.

The replays APPEAR to show Herd lashing out with his boot at Olsen before the ball is cleared, a good five or six seconds before the incident we THOUGHT led to the penalty.

The replay looks inconclusive to me.  The linesman saw it, and if he did lash out, it's a red card, unfortunately.

From th Beeb:

Quote
Right, I've seen a couple of replays but it is still not immediately obvious what has happened. Chris Herd does tangle with Jonas Olsson as the run in for Chris Brunt's (blocked) free-kick but it is never a red card, not in a million years, even when they tangle as theyget up afterwards. It's a pretty soft penalty too, so perhaps justice is done when Chris Brunt steps up to wildly blast his spot-kick well wide of goal. Think Chris Waddle in Italia 90, but worse.

Tricky old half time coming up for McLeish.

I think I'd take N'Zogbia off and put in Clark to take up Herd's role.

Baffling stuff, and it's ruined the game.

We'd be doing well to draw this now. Siege mentality needed I fear. Hopefully Gabby's pace and Bent's finishing might nab us all three points.

Regarding the penalty, Ollson didn't even appeal for the penalty. It was just a tangle and a pathetic decision by the linesman and an even worse one by Dowd.

Before that, I thought we looked comfortable.

So we are now level due to the ineptitude of the referee and his even more stupid sidekick with a flag in his hand. What a disgrace. If Herd had kicked out at Olsson, he would have been rolling over the floor.

Football is shit, to add a continuous sense of injustice to much of it only serves to make it more unpalatable these days. Had enough of the whole charade.

Right folks, just tuned in as West Brom scored (bad timing or what!).
We got a pen and Bent scored,
They get a pen and miss and Herd sent off for inexplicable reason then they manage an equaliser. Have I missed anything else?

Very precarious next 45 this, we could get easily overrun, we should reshape the front either take N'zog of or Bent and bring Gabby into the middle, he's our only real threat up front anyway (by the way what a footy brain Gabby has on him winning that penalty, absolute magic).

We need to bring Clark into the midfield and hopefully spring them for another goal on the counter, otherwise I fear WBA will fancy this.

Absolutely no doubt that we should be down to 10 men.

Hutton's "tackle" was a disgrace and Shane Long is very lucky not to have a broken leg and a year out of the game.

It is though the most unfathomable awarding of a penalty and sending off I have ever seen.  Did the linesman not wonder why Olsson showed no reaction whatsoever to the coming together?

Can't see us holding out or scoring again now.

linesman shouldnt ever get an EPL game again. How can someone get a decision that wrong?

Thought we were playing some decent stuff up to then and should have been 2 goals up. Herd and Bannan were combining well and Gabby had Reid in trouble.

Cuellar is back from a long lay off but I dont think he can be any worse than Hutton who was diabolical yet again and if a West Brom player committed that karate kick on a Villa player, we would be screaming for red. Disappointing to concede a set piece. Super delivery but both our centre halves were beaten to the jump.

Nzogbia has been disappointing again as has Bent. Id go with Nzogbia for the hook. Clark to come in. Bent might sneak the winner.

The half could be the making or breaking of us this season. Come on Villa.

They are replaying it time and time again. They can zoom into the point where you see the goose bumps on Herd's arm, but you still won't see a penalty. An utter joke of a decision.

That's what I think happened, although I think the 'bad' is a generous description.

I'd say McLeish is taking a bit of a risk here, not changing things around a bit. I hope he's not trying too hard to shed that 'negative' reputation - Alex, we'll be fine about getting a draw out of this one!

I think the fact Olsson stood up and was jogging next to Herd after the incident was a huge fucking clue that Herd didn't do anything. Olsson doesn't shy away from confrontation and I have no doubt if Herd had gone for a stomp, Olsson woulda reacted in some way, not jogged next to him.

This question was asked before the season started, it has been asked repeatedly so far this season, and I fear it will be asked several times more before the season ends:

Where is our midfield?
We sold most of it and let the rest go to seed.

Surely Heskey if he's going to be put on, should be put up front so we can lump it to him.

Why the yellow rubbery FUCK is Heskey playing in midfield?

He's not even very good as a forward, and that's meant to be his specialist position! Stupid ginger fool.

Albrighton on for Bannan.

Heskey in midfield.

I don't really understand what we're trying to achieve, here.

Would normally agree with you but we're finally starting to show that we actually do can pass a ball. Good to see Villa man-ing up, playing with plenty of heart. We just need to maintain the pressure. Can't argue with taking off Bannan, he's not doing enough, especially finding space.

We can still get something from this.

Sarcasm mainly.

It's a bummer we only have 10 players on the field when we should be playing with 11 players (thanks to Phil Dowd you ******)... you can't blame McLeish for that, what's annoyed me is the lack of effort almost looking as if we've completely given up on the game in second half.

I was hoping we'd be going into half time with the lead, them equalising kinda ruined McLeish's gamelpan in the second half.

I blame Phil Dowd for our loss today.

True but I said before the game that it was a huge game for Herd as there was no suitable replacement for him on the bench.  Of the players available he probably has played more than most in midfield.

I suppose Clark is an alternative that was available to him.

I must have missed the bits where we passed the ball well. Mainly, I've seen us squander possession, hit balls into touch, hoof it a lot and fail to retain the football. There may well be statistics to back this up, but I can't be arsed to look for them.

I hope you're right, that we can get something from the game.
