Breaking news on TalkSport.
We really have dodged a bullet by not hiring him here, and I'm ashamed to say I was in the small majority that genuinely wanted him quite badly at the Villa during the big managerial debate this summer.
No idea what he's gonna do now, back to Holland? Punditry?
-
I clearly remember the Talkshite pundits saying what a mistake we'd made not appointing Schteve. Idiots.
-
Repalcement...MON ??
-
Repalcement...MON ??
Crackin' shout, given that he's got both History with them, and a proven managerial record in that division.
-
Repalcement...MON ??
Nailed on....
-
He'd have found his level, again.
-
Poor Schteve, well I guess not so poor really!
-
Useless c**t.
-
Lose 1-3 at home to small heath and you deserve to pick up your P45.
-
And can we all have a quick round of applause for whoever it was decided against appointing him, when the media had made up their mind we should be grateful to have him.
They might not get a lot of praise these days, but credit where it's due.
-
To be fair I said he was one who was better than McLeish and based on his track record he is (Dutch Title, League Cup, UEFA Final with Boro), but from what I have heard he has been let down badly by the Forest board who promised him cash and didn't deliver. That said, Billy 'Arm Up' Davis did get the same bunch of players to the play offs.
-
Arguably the right man, but with the wrong board.
-
The bloke wasn't backed and apparently was made promises on appointment. For all the flack he gets McLaren is probably still the best English coach/manager in the game.
-
Repalcement...MON ??
I reckon he's got his eye on the Sunderland job - big spending owners and the chance to be the latest Messiah.

With the added advantage that the sorts of donkeys he gets to play are already in place thanks to Bruce's ludicrous transfer plunge in the summer.
-
Genuinly feel sorry for him. He was promised money but they refused his transfers. It speaks volumes that the fans were singing sack the board today not singing about Steve
And mon won't go there, they have no money and the board won't give him the free ride he needs
-
The Forest chairman has gone as well

Not quite.

Coach yes, manager no. The trouble is you can't see him going back to being a coach now due to his previous career.
-
From Auntie:
Manager Steve McClaren and chairman Nigel Doughty have both resigned from their roles at Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest.
McClaren held a two-hour meeting with Doughty, who will remain as the club's owner, after Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Birmingham at the City Ground.
-
Repalcement...MON ??
I reckon he's off back to Celtic.
-
Even if he hasn't been backed he's still done a spectacularly poor job for a team that has been in the play offs two years in a row. He's a bit crap, so glad we weren't bounced into appointing him.
-
Regardless of any capability he MAY have as a coach he's just a complete dickhead. At Watford a couple of weeks ago he decided to take to a partly built stand roof rather than watch the game from the dugout - then there's the accent, the brolly..... He always seems a bit desperate to do something to make himself look and sound terribly interesting. I was hugely relieved when we didn't get him.
Wouldn't be at all surprised to see MON roll up there
-
I don't really like the man but I feel a bit sorry for him with the unkept promises. He does appear to have destroyed his reputation in England all pver again though. It seems the only way is down from here.
-

Next stop SHA then?
-
I don't think MON will go there, unless he gets the sort of guarantees I don't think the current board are able to give.
In terms of ex-Forest players, Roy Keane might be up for the challenge and to restore his rather tarnished managerial reputation.
-
If McLaren has gone because he was misled about the money available, then there's no way in a million years O'Neill is going to go there.
-
This is fast becoming another MON thread!!! As for Mclaren, so glad we didn't go for him. Never rated him. At Middlesborough there was a lot of fans who couldn't stand him. For England he became a laughing stock. Probably the best thing he can do now is to lie low or maybe look for work abroad. In the same way that Alex Mcleish will never be accepted by some Villa fans, Mclaren will never be accepted by most English/British fans.
-
Stuart Pearce says he isn't yet ready for the England job, so this could be just the preparation he needs.

That's a good shout

Stuart Pearce isn't ready for the U21 job!

Since when did he become crap? Since he won the treble with Manure in their most successful period? Since he had the England job? Since he lead Boro (a shit team) to the League Cup? Since he lead them to a UEFA Final? Since he won the Dutch League? We haven't been in too many League Cup Final's/UEFA Finals in recent years.
-
McClaren's club record is pretty decent, good even.
He's just too much of a clownlike figure to be taken seriously. All his own fault though, no one made him pretend to be Dutch.
-

Its hard to point the finger of blame at the board when the previous manager was capable of getting more out of the players and more points in the bag.
As soon as I saw MON last week covering one of the CL games, I thought its only a small matter of time until he resurfaces at another club soon, but Pearce would be a good shout for the Forest job given the circumstances.

He didn't lead Man Utd to the treble, that Boro side was crap mostly because of the crap players he'd paid fortunes for, he won the Dutch League yes, but then has died on his arse within a couple of months at both Wolfsburg and Forest, and was a fucking joke as England manager, JT this and Stevie G that.
He's one of the luckiest men alive, a smarmy lickspittle with his cheese-eating grin and a weetabix head.
-
I have a bit of a theory about this. Most of the kids here are coached from a very early age, by the time they reach the Eredivisie they are light years away from most of the young players in England, especially when it comes to technical skills and motivation. Anyone with good coaching skills would be a great success as they could simply focus on how to organise a team to win. There is no real old style managerial requirement as most of the players come through the youth system and are then flogged at the moment they reach a level where they get noticed.
In the case of McClaren, he picked up a Twente side who were already well advanced through a good youth system and had played together for years. His coaching skills were the final piece in the jigsaw. The Twente fans hold him in huge stead as he was able to lift a provincial team to a league title.
Where he came cropper was the move to Wolfsburg. At Wolfsburg he was required to be a manager once more for a team with a huge expectation, his lack of language and his inability to be anything other than a coach led him to die on his arse..... At Forest it is the same deal.
As much as I had been a champion of him as a possible Villa manager, his failure at Forest and Wolfsburg indicates to me that he’s nothing better than a coach and in among the politics of our club, it could have been a disaster.
-
Doubt whether mon would be tempted back there with the finances as such , i think roy keane would be ideal for the role but it seems the hot favourite is the milton keynes boss.

Are you related to Pat Murphy?

Agree with you. We seem to be one of the few countries that condemns a manager for life once they have managed the national team. Only Bobby Robson was able to break this mould from all of those managers from the last 20 odd years. Yet even when this great man came back to coach in England, he was treated shabbily by Newcastle.
McClaren did a poor job at Forest, but was obviously sold the job on false pretences. He wanted to rebuild the team, but was unable to buy any players.
-
Curbs for Forest I reckon.

Since he got sacked from his last two jobs after a crap spell at England. In the last five or six years his one good season in the Dutch league is looking like a bit of a fluke.
He finally hit an all time low yesterday.

So why didn't he concentrate on using his alleged coaching abilities to get the best out players at his disposal in order to attain a respectable league position and demonstate to the sceptics that he is after all a reasonable manager?
The truth is that Mclaren is utterly clueless as both coach and manager. He knew where things were headed at Forest due to his incompetence and ran away like a coward in order to protect the reputation that exists only in his own mind and that of his dwindling band of media disciples, or in other words Pat Murphy.

You could apply your first sentence to virtually any manager, including the current Villa one. I think he was looking for a Premier League team, but accepted the Forest job so he could make the team his own and take them, which would have taken a few years. Why do that if in a few years you are still dabbling with loan and free signings.

KMac to Forest ?
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Ex-Aston-Villa-boss-Kevin-MacDonald-is-shock-target-for-Nottingham-Forest-article807878.html
-
I hope we don't lose KMac we need to keep him.
-
If he didn't want to be our manager I can't see him wanting the Forest job.
-

He was promised money and signed a few players for reasonable fees and on big wages. He got his money and he wanted more. I doubt Jonathan Greening, Ishmael Miller, George Boateng, Andy Reid and Matt Derbyshire are playing for free. I'm sure he's a good coach but he is a rank rotten manager. We really did dodge a massive bullet.
I thought at the time they were wrong to get rid of Billy Davies who seemed to have done a decent enough job there in spite of his difficulties with the board.

Its not "Notts Forest".
Nottingham Forest, if you want to speak about Notts just look towards Meadow Lane.
Sorry, my mate is a big forest fan and he bangs on about it, now I'm doing the same as him!

I have had the same treatment too, pig. In Nottingham, "Notts" refers only to one club and they play in black and white.

Yes, I couldn't really work out why he was constantly bleating about no backing when he'd brought those players in - in to a club which made the play-offs last season anyway. Not like the team needed a huge overhaul in the first place.

Who cares, it's easier to type Notts.
-
Don't see MON going there as he'll not be able to have it all his own way, too restricted for him - he'll end up at Celtic or Sunderland.
-
I reckon he's hanging around for Sunderland. The natives are getting restless with Bruce and with Niall Quinn no longer chairman maybe it is time for change there. Sunderland will be about as good as it gets for MON and a big step down from us.

Nah; Ive just got that feeling that Sunderland is where MON will end-up and it seems that things maybe moving in that direction.
-
The forest chairman has said that he will leave at the end of the season so MON could, if he plays it right, end up with quite a lot of power at forest.
As much as I cannot stand the bloke for what he did to us, I'd like to see what he could do with them. They seem a good match for whatever reason.

Yes, but it's like when French people ask me how "Aston" are doing. It's just wrong.

Or Germans asking about `Willar'. Generally I thrust a bayonet into their abdomen

Or the few Italians who do not seem to be aware of the prestigious history of Aston Villa. I tell them we wank as high as any in Wome.

Here you go Archie...
Which leads to the "wanks as high as any in Wome" quote.

Thank you mate, quite difficult to understand by myself. . . ;)

By rights, they should be called West Bridgeford Forest, as they are not actually within Nottingham.

If Villa stopped existing tomorrow, I think I would become a Nottingham Forest supporter.
I've always liked them.

Always preferred County myself. Remind me of Star Soccer back in the 80s.

Only since I've lived here, ie five years.
And I've never liked them.

I keep intending to start a thread asking that question. If Villa ceased to exist in any form, not even a fans club, who would you follow? I may try and do it later.

I only said Italians so I could squeeze in that line from the Life of Brian. ;-)
