Just heard on the Beeb that Carling are no longer going to sponsor the League Cup. Also reported in Guardian Sport (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/sep/27/carling-cup-sponsorship-league-molson)
They obviously concluded that if Bloose could win it no-one was taking it seriously
-
I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for the competition?
Shame if it is.
-
I don't think it has to be the end, it's been sponsored by coca-cola and worthington's
-
Somebody else will take up its sponsorship I'm sure.
-
Will be weird not calling it the Carling Cup.
-
Should be called the League Cup.
-
Why
Will be weird not calling it the Carling Cup.
Why? It's proper title is the Football League Cup, just stick with that and can't go wrong.
It's a competition that's provided me with far more happy memories than than its older sister, and as much as I'd like to give the older sister a go once in my lifetime, I've enjoyed many a romantic Wednesday night with the younger one. And a few memorable weekends in London too!

Nobody calls it the Football League Cup.
Nobody under the age of 40. Villa have only won the Football League Cup & the Coca Cola Cup.
Milk Cup (1982 to 1986)
Littlewoods Challenge Cup (1986 to 1990)
Rumbelows Cup (1990 to 1992)
Coca-Cola Cup (1992 to 1998)
Worthington Cup (1998 to 2003)
Carling Cup (2003 to 2012)

It'll be gone, or given a revamp soon.
-
They'll make it have group stages next.
-
I seem to remember when it was The Milk Cup, the milk marketing board commissioned a new trophy and the winners got presented with that as well as the traditional league cup. The noses would have loved that, they would have counted it as two trophy wins. There also used to be an eight foot tall plastic milk bottle in the centre circle before kick off in case you had forgotten what the competition was called or what milk looked like.

I've been hearing that for the last 20 years.

The Milk free, Littlewoods deficient, Rumbelows absent, Coca Cola missing, Worthingtonless, Carling no more LEAGUE CUP !
-
It is in need of an overhaul.
How about:
Teams playing European competition are ineligible for that season, matches played on the same weeks as European group stages. Winners still get qualification to Europe, ensuring at least one different participant each year.
Remaining teams put into seeded, but regional groups: more local derbies, more chances for the smaller league clubs to have a big home gate. Top two in each group then drawn to play straight knock-out - group winners have home advantage.
Final played at Wembley before end of February.
Condition of entry is the requirement to play strongest available team.
-
I refer to it as the League Cup, but I'm old.
-
I call it the League Cup too, or sometimes the Milk Cup if I'm feeling a bit silly. Too many name changes over the years hasn't helped.
-
More a sign of the times than the prominence of the competition IMO.
-
Maybe Carlsberg can take over the sponsorship, and see if they can live up to their advert claims and make it the best cup competition in the world....
-
I refer to it as the League Cup, but I'm old.
Me too. It's always been the League Cup, regardless who was sponsoring it.
-
With a subject line of Carling Dropping League Cup, I expected a video like this.
-
B & M are the new sponsors

Same as.
