I dont think the club needs sorting out root and branch like some of the over the top posts Ive been reading since last night.
I think Randy is the best possible custodian of the club at this present time. You dont pay £60 million for something and then dont care about it. I think he is doing the best he can under the circumstances of the ever changing football climate.
I think he is doing the right thing by cutting down and getting rid of the players that dont want to be here and shouldnt be here - the spending that MON did isnt sustainable long term without results. MON wasnt getting that and made some bad decisions so here we are.
Thankfully, Houllier granted us his own exit strategy before too much damage was done. Im CERTAIN the board interviewed higher calibre candidates than Mcleish but wanted the purse strings open and not work under the financial constraints that Mcleish accepted. Im pleased that we got SOMEBODY that has managed Rangers and at International level.
I dont think nothing needs to change at board level.
Manager wise, well we are playing more defensive is one way of putting it, I think 5 games in and we've had some inspid displays which has reflected in attendances. I think 12 or 15 games in we will have a better picture of where we are heading this season. You can tell that Albrighton and Delph have been told to become more defensive and not play with as much freedom as they are used to. Perhaps he will change that. He wont keep playing the same team, Delph and Zog both dropped last night after poor displays against Newcastle. I think Mcleish needs time. Time to change it around, diff formations, motivation techniques, different games.
Players wise I think the last remanants of the deadwood we should get rid of in January and replaced (except if they do well from now) is Beye, Ireland and Heskey. We will then have a core of players in Hutton, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Delph, Petrov, Zog, Bannan, Albrighton,Bent, Gabby, Fonz to be supplemented by a few signings in January.
I dont think Mcleish should go as he is not going to lose the dressing room. He may lose the fans if everything he tries fails by Christmas but its too early to get on his back. And would somebody PLEASE tell the press to give the Birmingham City link a rest. Nobdoy F***ing cares.
I think the prices at Villa Park are too high. Ive been quoted £72 for me and my 2 sons to attend at home to Wigan. This is in the Holte end corner lower. I think it should be £20 for me and £10 for the kids. I think the Manchester clubs, North London clubs, Chelski, Liverpool and the Black Country games should be premium priced but the rest should be more sensible. With a lower price we will get increase revenue, more noise, more backing and this transfers to the players on the pitch getting behind the team.
I think we need evolution not revolution here.
-
The problem is our options are limited. Sack Mcliesh and replace him with whom? We tried a manager who liked to pass and it got us nowhere, now we gone the other way and its panning out the same. Lerner doesn't seem committed in anyway apart from clawing back as much dough as possible. I'd like to see 3 or 4 of the current first team shipped out but thats not going to happen either.
Wait and see what happens seems the only option currently i'm afraid.
-
Honest answer, i dont know
-
We need Albrighton & NZogbia to start finding some form & we need to get the right players with Petrov in the middle.
-
Remy,
Reducing the prices does not mean increased attendance [last night for example was £5-£15 and we only got 22,000]
If you reduce all the prices then you will have to pass on the saving to the season ticket holders or they may decide that they are being ripped off and then don't renew
-
Whatever happens on the pitch (and Mcleish's style is being debated widely elsewhere) the one thing we need to do is get a football man back on the board, who seemed pretty clueless in the summer and now we are reaping the consequences. SGT or Steve Stride would be ideal but Taylor is committed to Watford and don't know why Stride quit.
-
Bring back Big Ron.
-
Without a change of board and some cash coming in, which isn't likely, it is a case of crossing fingers and hoping for better results.
The big problem in the team is lack of midfield bite, but there is no player in the squad that can come in and rectify that. So nothing doing till January. Sacking McLeish now would cost several million, and who would come in to replace him?
-
Anybody on a free, no contract etc we could snap up?

Wages still a problem. He was looking at McFadden but had to rule him out.

I think undoubtedly Randy has to stay and rumours of him totally losing interest in Villa are, I suspect, very wide of the mark. He’s clearly a realistic who has assessed the way football is heading and decided that the best long term policy is to reign in and maintain equilibrium. Herein to me lies the root of the problem. I suspect that the actions of the club are valid and business savvy, however, the PR at Villa is nothing short of shocking.
When Randy first took over, there was a palpable sense that the club valued the fans and many things were done to make us feel that the club truly valued us. However, ever since the departure of MON, the club has been stepping backwards at a frightening pace, leaving fans bewildered and the press seeing an easy target for the tedious ‘Villa in crisis’ banner. They have got to address this sharpish and give us the fans a clear picture of the actions we are taking so that we get a sense of why we are doing what we are doing and what the long term goal is.
-
I know what I'd have done four months ago, not so sure now.
It's as we are until January, at least.
-
If we get nothing out of the next two games and with a sure hiding awaiting at Eastlands the Board will need to make some tough decisions.
-
I thought getting Kevin Mcdonald in to the first team coaching team was a good move. The other thing as CJ pointed out would be to get a football man in on the board.
I was hoping for some sort of announcement from Aston Villa as to what their future hopes and ambitions were in the current climate. What I got was that dreadful letter they sent out.
-
If we get nothing out of the next two games and with a sure hiding awaiting at Eastlands the Board will need to make some tough decisions.
Like what? The board will do nothing, because no matter what occurs in the next few weeks, they have made it abundantly clear that there will be no change in policy. We could get utterly spanked at Eastlands (which we won't of course) and on the following Monday morning it will be business as usual at VP - On here I suspect many of our posters will be hanging from the beams.
-
You're right. I think the board are probably quite satisfied with the season so far. Wage bill being significantly reduced, squad size the same, transfer activity generating a profit, steady start to the season, unbeaten and in a reasonably sound position in the PL. They may have concerns over attendances at this point, but other than that I believe they'd be quite happy.
-
Is Randy attending games ?
He's obviously still interested but I would imagine, waiting for the bubble to burst until Villa can truly compete.
But the bubble won't burst, the rich get richer somehow, and the only way we are going to be 'up there' is if Randy sells.
This isn't easy, Everton are struggling to find a buyer and have a 'For Sale' sign outside the ground.
Our youth aren't as good as it was hoped they'd be ( Fonz in particular) and we're in the same situation as all the other mid table clubs - not enough money, recession affecting gates, payroll too high against t/o ... and the list goes on.
I guess there is no one answer, other than making the team we have play to the max.
This is where McLeish and team come in - they must start to get the team playing as a team, running off the ball, passing, moving, passing moving.
Stopping the 'hoof and hope' from the back Sunday league football style of play has to be first on the agenda at BH this week.
If certain players are lacking in confidence, get Mr Motivator in ( money i.e.wages doesn't come into this) and let's see some football AM, then, and only then will the fans come back and maybe, we will see some decent results.
People knock Harry R all the time, but he knows how to get a team playing; he knows how to create a brand of football that's easy on the eye.
If we can achieve that and move forward then many Villa fans will be far far happier, and we may even see some goals, some wins, some 3 pointers.
It aint easy, there's no quick fix.
-
I know we sold some big players this summer, but in the last 13 months the board has paid £8 mill for Ireland, £6mill on Makoun, £24 Mill on Bent and £9.5 mill on N'Zogbia, none of whom are living up to their price tags. Delph, Petrov and Cuellar are hardly looking like £8 mill players these days either. When you consider the money spent on the likes of Given, Collins, Warnock and Dunne as well it is a hellishly expensively assembled squad, so I can't really fault the board. It's a little early to slate the new manager, but positive results in the next 2 games are crucial.
-
On the pitch - McLeish is going nowhere, we have to keep calm and carry on.
Off the pitch - Getting someone who has been around the English game for years like David Dein onboard in an advisory capacity might not be a bad idea.

Yup.
-
Was Stride not offered any position at all during the takeover?
-
I honestly think Alan Curbishley could do a better job than this mug!!
-
The scary thing about our useless board is if we are in relegation by new year then they'll either not do anything, another panic buy (where it would have been better just giving McLeish the money in the summer) or sack McLeish (very unlikely) where we'll be stuck with Kev Mac until the end (don't want) or they'll hire another poor manager. I trust Ireland's football ability more than the board's ability to find the right manager that's how terrible they are.
We're stuck in a hole at the moment and we won't be able to get out until the core is destroyed. That is, for the board to do one and allow us to start again.
-

I know what you mean. If Mcleish was sacked tomorrow the sense of dread at who they might choose to replace him would be unbearable.

RL has to stay? He and his joke side-kick The General have lurched from one crisis to another since August 2010. They haven't a clue and have made a series of disastrous decisions over the last year or so. You need Football men on the Board and these two haven't any idea whatsoever. I can't believe that people on here still support a part-time regime that's rapidly sending us down to the Championship - WAKE UP!!

And who do you propose should takeover? Perhaps we ought to give Doug a call back and say all is forgiven, or perhaps give Bill Gates a tinkle and ask him if he fancies taking on a middling Premier League club who’s fans have the patience of a six year old with a bag of sweets and are prone to turn on him the moment he chooses not to spunk another 10M away on a fruitless exercise.

I think they would because last night was an evening cup game compared to the saturday traditional 3pm kick off time. (Which are few and far between now because of Sky).

I really think they would top McLeish. I mean look at McLaren right now at Forest, he's probably gonna walk out and if our board were to sack McLeish, they would probably go for McLaren.
Really don't know what went in their mind when they hired McLeish this summer. Hughes was available to take the job or if they really wanted someone to work in these ridiculous restrictions then someone like Curbs would have been better. Not a man who has 2 Premier League relegations and finished 3rd in a 2 horse race. I think they're mentally ill and it's a nightmare they remain charge of our club.

**ring ring** Hello is that the Kumar Brothers, yes this is Randy Lerner here. Are you looking for a new football challenge, well have I got a great proposition for you.
Believe me, you don't want Randy walking away right now.

No over-reaction there at all.

I think they're mentally ill and it's a nightmare they remain charge of our club.

Really isn't an over reaction. To do this day, it still makes no logical sense why they hired him. Fans protested for so many reasons and it's not just because he was the Small Heath manager. He hasn't got a good Premier League record, he is known for one of the worst football dross (makes Big Sam football look good), he isn't good in the transfer market, he has no Plan A, he isn't even good at relegation battles.
The performances we've played under him so far have been truly shocking. You would think seeing as he has got better tools to work with he would improve his tactics from Small Heath, but it's exactly the same. No vision. No passion. No idea. Not only are we not winning enough games, but the draws we've managed to get (don't be fooled, the unbeaten Premier League run is a blessing in disguise) we didn't even deserve. Now we're not even improving. We're going backwards at a extreme rate and the majority of fans think QPR, a newly promoted team who hasn't been in the PL for over a decade will beat us easily and they're right. We have no idea what we're doing on the pitch.
The worst part is the protests were there as a warning. Due to the board's arrogance, they thought they knew best when it's clear they don't. Now seats are affected and I can see it getting worse as time goes by if the performance doesn't improve soon, which it won't because this is all McLeish knows.
Surely you must understand these concerns? I mean what positives could you take yesterday from last night match? We had our first shot on target at home against Bolton reserves nearly the 90th min? What else. Why is McLeish a good manager for us? How can you be saracstic and think it's an over reaction? It seems McLeish could be immune from a sacking (the board won't have the guts to admit they were wrong) and this could finish us a Premier League club.

If randy feels he no longer has the resources or desire to take the club onwards to the next level then id like him to say so and look for new investors -he has given it his best shot and got very close but the dream is now over.
I thank him for all hes done in the past but if he cannot any longer afford it then come clean and leave with his head held high- and yes i know its not easy to find someone who would want to invest in aston villa but i dont want us to be happy to just stay up and exist.

Ridiculous over reaction -we had our first shot in the 87th minute not the 90th (smiley.)
-
it still makes no logical sense why they hired him.
Makes perfect sense. Think about the new strategy/policy in place - a manager who would accept certain limitations was the aim. That's why McLeish isn't going anywhere for a while. Results on the pitch are only part of his job description.
-

Mcleish certainly wasnt my top choice but was by no means as bad a choice as some portrayed, i was happy to welcome him here and give him a chance and the jury is still out to an extent-i beleive he was sold down the river having sold players for £40m to only be given a quarter of that to bring new players in -any manager would struggle having lost his best creative players and im more inclined to blame randy than mcleish at present.
No doubt though the sort of dire football being served up by mcleish at the moment is not acceptable and he needs to make changes to his sytle of football and fast -in all honesty i think the club is in a real mess at the top and randys biggest mistake was in not appointing the right manager when mon left and the club were still relatively attractive.
-

It doesn't make perfect sense at all, especially financial wise. We had to pay extra money to bring him in and he's one of the main reasons why seats are low this year. It's gonna get worse because people don't wanna pay for this pile of crap. So the board can keep cutting all they want, they won't see much revenue when the season finishes compared to previous ones and it's their fault alone for not realising this could happen.
Oh, and there were other managers available even if we ignore Mark Hughes. Alan Curbishley would have been happy enough to do the work in these limitations. Not only that, but his football isn't bad, his Premier League record isn't bad and knows how to win a relegation fight if it did come to that. Yeah, he may been average, but McLeish is levels below average and it doesn't feel safe we'll remain in the Premier League with him as our manager.
There's no justifications and it seems fans are still clutching straws. It was one of the biggest shambolic appointments in history and that alone is why we need a new board because they won't learn from their mistakes. I mean Randy has been here 5 years now and still hasn't got a clue of how football works.

I'll be interested to see the reaction after we beat QPR 4-0.

A very large part of his job description, I would guess
About 99%
-
If you can't see what I'm saying, you can't see it. That's fair enough. I also happen to think it was one of the most shambolic appointments we've ever made; McLeish wouldn't have been anywhere near my shortlist and I refused to believe he was in the running until the day he was appointed.
But I can see why the board appointed him. Because they wanted a manager prepared to accept downsizing the squad, prepared to work within a tight budget in terms of player wages, prepared to accept that he wouldn't be given even half of the transfer funds generated by player sales. There was no point bringing in someone like Benitez, who would have had ideas and plans on a grander scale and would have wanted to bring in players of a certain class.
I don't understand why we didn't go for Hughes, though presumably he would also have expected Villa to be a big job with big potential, whereas the reality now is that we're probably fishing in the same sort of pond as Fulham and therefore not the step up he'd have wanted. Perhaps he was approached and didn't like what he heard. After all, whatever happened with Roberto Martinez, he wasn't sufficiently excited to push through a departure from Wigan.
One final thing, though: I wouldn't have wanted Curbishley anywhere near Villa.
-

Blimey times are bad If SWP is going to rip us apart ;-(

on appointing mcleish the board should have backed him financially as the general implied they would-he has been hung out to dry by the board.

True , and to be fair , there was some good cheap deals out there for us ..

You can't really sort this situation out at the moment. The board are achieving their goal of reducing the wage bill.

Why is that if Lerner sold up, the only possible owners that people can envisage are oil rich Arabs or other Forbes List top 10ers? It would obviously need somebody with a lot of money, but a bit of business acumen also goes a long way, and when it comes to sports ownership, Lerner knows absolutely nothing, and the people around him are no better.

How unexpected. I won't waste any precious time reading this (eastie, nowt against you posting it you understand).

We've had 12 months of being patient - where's the club heading? DOWN perhaps idiots like you enjoy Championship football
And if you call someone an idiot again then you'll be invited to find a new forum to post on.

If Randy has no money, then he needs to seek further investment. Even of it means relenquishing 100% control of the club.
-
Not a fecking clue how you change it!

This is the worst position we've been in since the O'dreary era.
Increasing match prices £43 against Wolves and Newcastle i believe, best players leaving and a boring defensive manager.
Talk to the blues fans and they say Hughton is a breath of fresh air compared to Mcleish.
Sad times ahead, low crowds will get lower when the results go against us. I think Mcdonald is waiting in the wings for when Mcleish gets the bullett!

Quite simply even though we are being defensive we are being over run through the middle of the park as Petrov seems to have been told to attack and Delph is not ready to hold on his own, while Petrov does not have the legs to get back with him. The formation is a mystery to me a little at the moment, there seems to be almost an schizophrenic internal struggle on the pitch between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1/ 4-3-3...
We need to sort it, accept that away from home and even at home against decent sides, that 4-5-1 is a necessary evil. Then the 3 men have to be 2 sitting and 1 foraging, interchanging when necessary to make it fluid. Jenas, Petrov, Delph, Bannan, Ireland give us enough, but of those Jenas and Petrov starting with one of the others would be my selection, probably Ireland for a run of games to finally say yay or nay, ie, you get 5-6 game run, if you are shit you go in Jan, if good then bonus.
Wide for me we should be going Gabby and NZogbia, but both need to be higher up the pitch, working the channels more (NZogbia) and making the 2nd striker when the other is in a crossing position, with the full back overlapping for the over hit ball.
Anyhow, Heskey would not feature.... and Delph playing further forward if Ireland screws up might be interesting, he is a technically gifted player with more physical strength than Bannan, who I worry about, but might be more effective sitting deep and playmaking rather than being in direct combat with the oppositions defensive midfield players when playing further forward.

A breath of fresh air getting stuffed at Southampton, if you're jealous of that then you've lost all sense of reality.

No, but thats where he took them!
Rather play attacking exciting football and lose 4-1 than play 10 behind the ball and lose 2-0
-
We need strong leadership coming from the man in sole charge - and since MON left we haven't had that...
-
Need something to change on the pitch. Clinging on for a draw is a dangerous habit.

You didn't go last night then.
Where did you get the idea that the Noses played exciting attacking football at Southampton? Reports I heard said they were shit and easily beaten.

If you can't see what I'm saying, you can't see it.
Yes that can be a problem...Have you thought about posting an audio file? ;D
-
watched the 'social network' last night,
that fella Mark Zuckerberg, thats who we need, he's got loads a money, and no friends so he wont mind it when we all boo him and call him names when we lose a game.

We did go for Hughes according to one local hack but he didnt want to come to us.
-
Mark Hughes is world class supercoach on par with Lippi, van Gaal, Advacaat, Guardiola Cloughie etc. He awaits Barca obvioulsy after a period of rest following performing miracles with Fulham. How can anyone think of the Great Mark Hughes coaching any team other than Barca is behind my comprehension.

I'd fuck McLeish off before it's too late and go and get Gus Poyet. Has anyone seen Brighton play under him? They play some terrific football, even against Liverpool the other night, so at least we'd play some decent stuff in the battle for the holy grail of 8th.
-
the answer is money and we ain't got none.
beyond that keep we club financially secure and stay in the PL & wait for either
A- FIFA financial fair play to kick in and hopefully work for us
or B - hopefully by being secure and in the PL wait for a very rich person (s) to buy us out.

I agree with you that, if as we did last season, are going through a period of transition, why not stick our necks out and go for an up and coming manager . . . Oh, didn't we try with Martinez, but he didn't want to even turn up for the interview.
Unfortunately the board wanted someone who can stick it out in the mucky end of the Premier League (which Martinez had experience of as well). As it seems no one on the board had any idea who to approach next or have any knowledge/links with English football, they picked the bloke closest to home.
It is all well and good getting good vibes from Dunne about how he is enjoying his football, but when a strong defence goes wobbly, we need to become creative, and that's where we are sadly lacking.
-
I would love to see what actually goes on in training
How can the manager not see our shortcomings?
having said that he thinks Ivanhoe could be a centre half so that just confirms what a fuckwit he is
I would bring in the revolutionary idea of playing people in their normal positions
-
How can the manager not see our shortcomings?
Well he played the same way at Blues for 38 games last season and got them relegated so it just shows he only knows how to play one way, and that one way is fucking shite.
-
heskey as a link up man
Bannan as a winger
Nzogbia on the right instead of the left
I really fear for us this season, every other manager will know how to exploit our weaknesses but it's something we seem totally unable to fathom out.
When I played Sunday league football most of us were still pissed when we played but we all had a basic understanding of what we should be doing.
That twat of a manager was bigging up Warnock getting in behind the Bolton defence at the end of the first haf, he forgot to mention the ball ended up going out for a throw in.
The Board need to take the blame but so does AM, he's getting almost 2 million a year and hasn't got a fucking clue
-
There is a definite playing style starting to develop as each fixture happens, problem is once we hit a brick wall and start losing games, which will happen, how will we respond and how will the players deal with, let alone the fans.
Said when we appointed McLiesh, the board must have known that where this manager is concerned he had a mountain to climb even before the first ball had been kicked at the season start, its how fast it falls apart if we hit a bad patch.
