Anyone else not impressed so far? I know he's slightly behind in terms that he hasn't had a pre season but he's greedy and sulky and he keeps trying to do it all himself.
He hasn't clapped the fans once and when he was subbed today he just trudged off. So far looks like £9.5m wasted.
Thoughts?
-
He looks a bit lazy tracking back and hasn't offered much going forward either.
-
A handful of games to settle doesn't seem over-generous to me.
-
I think he's still finding his feet, and like a few other players still trying to find his role within this squad. He is quite greedy if I say so myself.. more of a dribble first, pass second kind of player. He needs to focus on serving the ball whether it be a neat pass or an over the top ball. I'd like to see him beat his defender and take it to the endline for a backward ball to the always waiting Bent. Yet to see anything really wow me, but I'm confident he'll come good in the next few weeks.
I expect him to have a big game against Toon.
-
I've still got faith, he's very talented.
-
If that strop he showed when he came off is symptomatic of his behaviour, the management staff need to have a word. At least he cares (about himself) I suppose.
-
It is well known that he has an attitude problem so this was always the risk when he was bought and why I always said we should have bought Matt Jarvis
-
He's shown some good stuff in flashes but as others have said he's still settling in. As for being pissed off about being subbed I take that as a good sign, I wouldn't expect any player to be happy about it.
-
Didn't he piss off to Dubai when he was in the midst of his transfer speculation? He's still settling and he's not had much of a pre-season.
He's undoubted quality but will come good. However he doesn't seem to have the same hunger and drive that Ashley had.
-
Poor reaction to being substituted and he was very poor today as were several others , let's hope he improves against his old club next week.
-
I rate him.
Did'nt show an attitude at Wigan, has a good touch, and was looking to be positive today, if Bent would have been fully fit today, a couple of them balls he tried might have worked.
We need him and Bannan in the team , they are the most creative players we have.
-
He's shown some good stuff in patches, and been poor at other times, hopefully it's just a case of him settling into a new club and getting up to speed. And i'd much prefer a player be pissed at being subbed rather than not seem bothered.
-
The reaction bothered me, yes he does need some time, he is used to the Premiership, can't see any reason why he isn't by now starting to show something of what everybody hopes is there, put it this way Ashley Young has a much bigger step up to get used to Man Utd and Downing to get used to Liverpool than N'Zogbia does at Villa, that said give him a few more games, for me i didn't have any great expectations for the player because this is a player that has played for Wigan (struggle) and Newcastle who was second choice to Duff so not quite sure what we should expect.
His attitude on leaving the pitch, was that frustration or was that something else, did he really think he'd played well.
-
I've seen him in two games this season (BBurn and Wolves) and thought he looked good in both. Nothing amazing but tidy and skillful.
We need to get behind the players, especially those who have only worn the shirt 4 times for us.

Fair enough, but the only thing that would concern me is when he looked a bit pee'd of when leaving the pitch did he think his standard was good enough and why are you taking me of boss, or, was it, I could have done a lot better against this crap, I'm better than this, this is the question surely and something that the back room boys need to sort.

How concerned would you be if he looked delighted to be subbed?
-
New signing in taking a few games to settle in shocker.
Young, Downing and Milner all took a fair number of games to settle in.

True but they didnt sulk when they got substituted...........not that Ashley got subbed often

Think he was allowed to go on holiday by Wigan as he'd played over the summer for France
-
Lazy, sullen and overpaid is the job description for many PL footballers.
-
I'm not sayin he's shit or not good enough or not gettin behind him. I'm just sayin thus far he hasn't shown much. I mean he got subbed we clapped him and he didn't even acknowledge us its not hard is it? It's not just today either

I dont think he did mate
-
He'll be just fine. He proved it playing for a much smaller team last season that he'll come good. Give the bloke a chance.
Also, why am I so looking forward to seeing Jenas play?

Im sorry I doubted you mate, cheers for the link, could have been a U21 tourno I suppose as the BBC profile for him shows 2 full caps and 2 U21 caps
-
I think he was playing well at Wigan as to advertise himself to bigger clubs.
Now he's (arguably) at one, he has nothing to prove.
-
He will come good I'm sure of it.
-
I was expecting a bit more than what i've seen so far. It's not as if he's come from another country and needs to settle in. Maybe a game or two on the bench for Albrighton might do him and us some good.
-
Also, why am I so looking forward to seeing Jenas play?
Masochistic tendencies?
-
The old man made an interesting point during the game today. Reckoned that people seeing how Young is getting on at the mancs, and how good a player Downing was for us last season, that we're coming to realise the quality of players that we've lost, and expecting N'zogbia to be able to replace that quality is maybe a bit much. He's definately got talent, but I'm not sure he's as good as either of them if i'm honest.
-
Plays with a smile on his face, is not a term you will hear about NZOG.
If the coaches can integrate him into the club and team, he could be very effective.

That kind of sums it up for me. A lot of Villa fans where saying Young was useless last season and Downing is an ungrateful arsehole. So, get N'zogbia in, play Albrighton and Bannon and job done. Sadly it's not going to be as easy as that.
How much of a pre-season does he need, has he had a broken leg for 3 months?
To me, I think he is uncomfortable in his position. He wants a free role behind the striker. Perhaps he should have discussed this before signing for us.
-
was singing Charles' praises when he joined us but im yet to feel justified in that! Will give him time but wish he'd have the same impact our outgoing wingers have had at their clubs.
-
He is utter rubbish get rid of him!
I really don't see why a player has to clap all around when he is subbed?
-
put it this way Ashley Young has a much bigger step up to get used to Man Utd and Downing to get used to Liverpool than N'Zogbia does at Villa,
Can you explain exactly how it was a much bigger step for Young and Downing?

I was thinking the same???
-
He's been dreadful, and was absolutely rotten today. He may turn out to be a good buy of course, but so far he's a million miles away from being as good as Downing, let alone Young.
-
Poor so far with a pretty dismal attitude. Will forgive the latter as soon as he stops being shit. I mean how difficulty is it to raise two fucking arms and put your hands together twice for people who've travelled far and paid loads to watch you?
-

Is exactly what I was going to say. It cost me £50 yesterday for coach & ticket not including beer & burger and he's too busy to care he's earnt probably 100 times that but were only supporters fuck us
-

Things is Eastie, he desperately wants to impress, to do the business in other words, and that means being on the pitch.
Managers like it when a player is pissed off when pulled off, it demonstrates commitment and a genuine desire to do well.
Give him time, think Downing.
-
i think a few on here are being a little precious. The guy is obviously pissed at himself for underperforming - as im no longer 7years old i couldnt give a rats ass whether he does a daft little gesture, just do the business on the pitch and ill be happy
-

Yes but he isnt doing the business................and we cant afford him to take 6 months to settle into the team
-
Isn't this just typical, he's had 5 games must be shite kind of thing we're famous for. If he'd high fived Mcleish for taking him off and said after the game he was desperate to get on the bench and fuck about with his i-Pad i'd have been a bit more upset. He's settling in and getting fit at the same time, how about cutting one of our own some slack FFS.

If he had put the same eagerness on the pitch which he put into throwing his moody strop going off it, he might be looked on more favourably.

Agree and if he was as good as A.Young or Downing Mancs or 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' would have bought him instead. Especially at the 9.5M price we are led to believe he cost us.
Let there be no doubt, If we keep selling our best players every summer, there will be a period of games where we will have to "make do" with what else is available at the prices we can afford on our payroll. Ashley Young was always going to be a hard act to follow. At times I think he was under appreciated by us fans. Fans often don't know what they have until it's gone.
I am sure Zoggy will be worth the fees as soon as he has had a little time to sort out our playing styles in training. AT the moment it looks like N'Zogbia likes to play inside, whereas AM may be asking him to play wide right. In the game with Everton our stats on attacking showed that most of our attacking options (were there any in the first half?) came mainly through the middle. As soon as Albrighton came on we saw some right wing play , one of which led to Gabby's goal.
The luxury of having Downing and Young on our wings with Bent in the middle for this season would have been awesome.
In the meantime, while N'Zogbia is finding his feet, there is an opening for both Bannan and Ireland to shine.
It should be mentioned that Bent was showing signs of being hampered by his injury and that would alter passes and timing interplay between Bent and Zog. There is a lot of room for improvement as the season moves on.

Rubbish, he had a little mutter to himself. If that's a moody strop to you then you've never been a parent.

So perhaps we could just put a creche on the pitch so he can play with his toys, until he decides to move his arse about a bit more.
-
Ok he's not been great so far but he wouldn't be the first player to take a season to settle into a new club. Lets not get on his back just yet.
And it's a huge reminder for those that thought replacing the 'over-rated' Ashley Young would be a piece of piss.
-
Did you even se the game yesterday? You're making a huge deal out of a very minor incident. There's not much wrong with his effort, he's just not hit top form yet. It happens.
-

Of course it happens, that's not the argument. If he was sweating through his arse through effort, I wouldn't have minded his mutterings.
Surely you have to justify your place on the pitch. At the moment, we seem to be playing him because we have no one else (or the manager doesn't trust anyone else). It's obviously not fair on him to just chuck him in the mix and expect him to create something every touch.
Albrighton has been getting stick recently, but at least he set up our best chance against Wolves, and Gabby's goal aginst Everton.
-
I've said, on this site and a couple of other forums, that this was a worry for me with him signing.
I still feel that Aiden McGeedy would have been a better choice.
However, I'm sure he'll come good and must be given time to settle in.
-
Yesterday during the first half, he got given the ball on the right hand side and had loads of space to run into, but instead decided to try and slip the ball in between two Everton players and lost it. It was very sloppy, he should have been trying to outrun his marker.
He'll come good i'm sure, but he's not much of a goal threat at the moment.

Except nobody has said he's shit?

Martin Petrov can put in a good cross. Every time he crossed it yesterday agsinst Manu it was perfect. He would have been a good purchase I reckon.
-
It's the Clough technique. Get underperforming players angry.

I love the "needs time to settle" argument, just like Aguero and Suarez need time to settle, imagine how good they will be when they have settled. Zog has played in England for years, this excuse of "needs time" is bullcrap, if players have ability they "settle" very quickly.

Are you really trying to compare two world class players playing in teams who are dominating games with possession at 75% and having 20 shots per game against our 1 shot on target and very little ball?

Absolute bollocks.
Ask any Man U fan what they thought of Vidic and Evra for the first 6 months. Most wondered what the hell Fergie had wasted millions on.
I don't know your age or circumstance but I'm assuming you've never had a career change that involved relocating? It takes time to find your feet, and different people will have different timescales to do so.
And that's before you take into account what playing role he's being asked to adapt to. It may be something he's not used to doing, it may be he hasn't quite hit an understanding of the kind of runs Bent will make etc etc.
I accept he hasn't hit form yet, but I can guarantee you one thing - he will perform much better with the Holte getting behind him than he will with you booing every mistake he makes.

goods points, well made - this is the trouble with the prem - we want (or demand) instant results due to the wages that are paid
I think he will be a good player for the Villa given time (how much depend upon results)

The bloke was playing in Wigan and presumably spent his summer hols in France. What time zone would he be needing to get used to exactly apart from GMT?
Appreciate the lad's had an injury which would account for underperformance, so all the more reason to get fans on a hundreth of his salary on board with a brief nod in their direction when he is substituted after a sub-standard performance and they still find it in their hearts to give him a clap because he wears the shirt of the team they love.
Christ, it was the kind of basic PR which bought Nigel Reo Coker 12 months of good grace before we realised he was shit.
By the way, Mr Woo, what will you do with those Chinese laundry blues?

Or Henry and Dzeko? Or Ashley Young and Stewart Downing when they joined us. He's also had to joint a side that are all having to adjust to a new manager and a new way of playing having lost a number of regulars from last season.
-
Unfair to make any definitive judgement until at least christmas- i agree he was disappointing yesterday but it was a poor team display and a quality display against his old club next week would give him a huge boost .

Young, Downing and Milner are all players we would have back in a heartbeat. All three took at least a dozen games to settle in.
-
N'Zogbia is playing too deep in my opinion. We need his skills behind Bent, not behind our attacking midfielders.

It isn't only Villa. Has Carroll settled at Liverpool yet, for example? I'm sure if you look into it you can find examples at all clubs.

Don't be daft Chris, this is modern football with the modern fan. Its got to happen now, in the first five minutes of a game otherwise he's a write off.

I do feel sorry for N'Zogbia getting criticism, but the problem with any Villa signing, is that they are few and far between, so the magnifying glass comes out, and it comes out quickly. Villa have only signed 6 players in the last two seasons (not including loans), Liverpool have, I think signed 21 players in that time.
-
There's also the act that he isn't as good as the players we've sold in the same position.
-
There is obviously that. In a sense, he was one player coming in, replacing two players going out, but that's not his fault.
It reminds me a not like the time when we were going to buy Juninho, and ended up with Steve Stone.
-
The sullen face? From my desktop research on N'Zogbia when we signed him, he rarely smiles, even when he scores, as was demonstrated at Braga. Get used to it.
As for his footballing side, as somebody mentioned earlier, I don't think we've found his best position and as with playing Gabby on the wing and Heskey in the attacking midfield role, AM seems to be accomodating players rather than trying to find the right balance. Martinez at Wigan has a more 'modern' approach to his sides style, whilst we are old school 'battlers'. At the moment we're having to carry Zog but I still believe he'll come good but whether or not we continue to give him a start is open to question.
As we have one of his former clubs next up I'd be tempted to start him and hopefully with Bannan in the team we'll be more adventuous in our play. It's a shame that yesterday it took Dunne and Collins to show the midfield that you can push further up the field, by which time Zog had already been subbed. He needs the link up play with the midfield and can't be expected to do it all by himself.
If he again fails to deliver against Newcastle, I'd be tempted to drop him until we work out how best to use him. I do however think he'll have a cracker against the Geordies and expect him to feature on the list of scorers in a home win.
-
good player in a shit team (wigan)
-
put it this way Ashley Young has a much bigger step up to get used to Man Utd and Downing to get used to Liverpool than N'Zogbia does at Villa,
Can you explain exactly how it was a much bigger step for Young and Downing?
Very easily, Ash Young is going to arguably one of the best teams in the world, going to a team that demands absolute perfection from its players or your out, Berbatov anybody, Ash in response being a quality mature pro, used to the Premiership has responded instantly and slotted in like its the only club he's ever played for, if you turned around to most Man Utd fans and asked them if Ash Young needs to prove himself they'd probably ask what the hell you where on about, Downing is doing Ok but because of where Liverpool aspire to be he's got a lot to do.
N'Zogbia, the step up from Wigan albeit Villa are a bigger club, think its fair to say Villa as we stand are mid-table stuff so any difference between that and 17th is often negligible so if N'Zogbia, mature Premiership player as anything about him should start to show some of what he's got, should start to making his mark on the team, now unless I'm very much mistaken I haven't seen much of that yet but that's not to say its not going to happen.
-
I think the problem is we're playing too narrow.
-
I think the problem is we're playing too narrow.
Could be, I think another problem is players aren't relating to each other in the way we where even last season. Petrov's goal was an opportunistic punt at goal that turned out excellent, Gabby goal was virtually self made, well if we are going to get the best from a brilliant striker like Darren Bent we have to start to get some cohesion surely.
Needs Gabby right at his side IMO.
-
"Needs Gabby right at his side IMO."
I have never understood this Bent needs a partner theory. My recollection of his playing career suggests otherwise.
He got his big move to Spurs having played as a lone striker for Charlton. At spurs he was paired with either Defoe, Keane or Crouch and never really maintained his Charlton form. Admittedly there was a period at Sunderland with K. Jones but he soon left for Stoke and he was back playing on his own with Wellbeck and Gyan (sp?) in a kind of 433.

My point would be, At Villa he needs a partner, the past is just that, to me at Villa he seems to be drifting this season, last season he did well but the quality of service he was getting was from the likes of Ash Young, look at the impact on Rooney's game this season with Ash in the side, calling him world class again.
Problem for Benty he hasn't got that in the side any more, that's where N'Zogbia is going to have to kick in and fast, the only other option if for McLiesh to create a partnership, its the old way, but it often works.
-
I think the problem is we're playing too narrow.
I think the problem is we aint giving DB any service whatsoever. Bannans brain in the center of midfield may solve this problem. Petrov and Delph cant give him the service, maybe Ireland could if he gets his finger out of his arse.
Hopefully Jenas can when he's fit.
-
Ok he's not been great so far but he wouldn't be the first player to take a season to settle into a new club. Lets not get on his back just yet.
And it's a huge reminder for those that thought replacing the 'over-rated' Ashley Young would be a piece of piss.
I am pointing out that Zog has played in the top flight in England for years, yet he still needs time to settle when other players can come in from other countries and slot in straight away, why is only at Villa that players need time to settle
It isn't only Villa. Has Carroll settled at Liverpool yet, for example? I'm sure if you look into it you can find examples at all clubs.
Don't be daft Chris, this is modern football with the modern fan. Its got to happen now, in the first five minutes of a game otherwise he's a write off.
was the "modern fan" aimed at me, do you think any modern fan would be pissing their time away on a Villa message board, balls would they, they would be doing it on a manure, city, chelsea, 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' or arse. I'm a bit too long in the tooth to be a modern fan, cant change my club, everyone who knows me knows im Villa, no way i can say it has all been a dream like Bobby Ewing, i have an opinion on Zog, a player who needs time to settle in the same league he has played in for a few years now, whereas other teams can get players in from abroad who fit right in from the off, he needs to buck his ideas up and earn his money, he doesn't need people making excuses for him, he is after all a professional footballer.
-
I think that's right dishy, he has to step up, he's a pro, he should show it and is not a question of getting used to the Premiership which can be a problem.
Fact is we play Newcastle next at Villa park, lets see him do a job.
-
Do we think Stephen Ireland still needs time to settle ? He cant get anymore settled than he is now and he's still ( if he's lucky) getting a few minutes off the bench. At what stage do we say he aint going to do it and consign him to the bin.
N'Zog has to get his finger outta his arse and start performing. We are not in the position where we can carry players in the hope that they will eventually come good.
We can't build our season on ifs and buts. If Charles need a few games coming off the bench then so be it.
-
His place in the team depends on how Marc Albrighton and Ireland progress this season. Ireland really should be making it now and if he is not a regular by Xmas than we really need to throttle him! Marc's personal target should be to keep him out of the team but...

Stephen Ireland, he's so settled he's horizontal, I can't figure this player out, but when you see the none fan of football making statements like millionaire over hyped young blokes that do phuk all for it, then, well, you can't help but think of Stephen Ireland.
For me this is the kind of player we need to get of the wage bill and make room for players that want to give heart and soul to the club or at the very least 90mins or there time each week.

Tend to agree with CN'Z starting on the bench for a couple of games.
On the Stephen Ireland front, I think he needs a couple of 90 games and a goal and his confidence could return.
When he played against Hereford he had a decent game and was getting into some great positions, only a couple of great saves kept him off the score sheet.
I was one of his biggest critics, but it appears he seems 'interested' again. This can only benefit our club.

How good of him. It's shit or bust for him from now 'till January. Redemption or get rid. He has a chance to get into the team and all going well , stay there, if he still has the heart to play football and earn his money for a change.
-
We did not give Jean II Makoun time to settle. His was a clear case of being a Houllier man he could pack his bags. N'Zogbia is very much McLeish's man and if he does not deliver, McLeish should be and will be held to account.
I do not buy into this mindset of one player being given two seasons to settle in and another given two months. If you hire a top barrister you expect him/her to perform just as well at Southwark Crown Court as at the Old Bailey. They are very highly paid professionals and should perform as such not like part timers who are worried about who is running the family plumbing business on saturday afternoons.
-
I agree with BG, I can understand the bit short of fitness, it is his decision making that is the problem.
-
Spot on. Against Wolves he chose long range pot shots at goal on two or three occasions when he should have realized that his job is to feed Bent whether he likes it or not.
-
He was used to being the 'Main Man' at Wigan, at Villa there are several in front.
You're right, Brian, in saying that his primary role is to supply Bent and Gabby.
-
This time next year we will be millionaires...
-
He's clearly way off in his fitness levels.
-
Didn't see the substitution reaction. What did he do? Boot the dugout, go face to face with Sid and have a rant, chuck his shirt on the floor?
-
He muttered to himself in what looked like frustration at his performance and/or being subbed off.
I reckon you'd have to be wanting to see something to read anything more into it than that.
-
Oh. No wonder I missed it. Cheers Ryu.
-
Too early to write him off but so far he's been very underwhelming.
-
Too early to write him off but so far he's been very underwhelming.
Agree. His body language doesn't seem right to me
Still you never know he may be fit by Xmas
Who would have thought it what with him being a professional athlete
-
I think we bought him because he takes players on rather than passing. At least that would be the sensible thought given that he dribbled twice as often as Downing and Young did last season.
It's inevitable that players like that will lose possession at times isn't it? He needs to get to know a new system and new players which will take a little time but shouldn't take forever.
It's good he was disappointed to be taken off, he probably feels it's a slight against him, who wouldn't in the heat of the moment?
Give him time, how on earth anyone can think he's a waste of money less than a month into his Villa career is beyond me.
-
The fact that anyone French who has turned up at the Villa has flopped massively is a trend that is going to be bucked by N'Zogbia.Starting against Newcastle we'll see a real player.By the way i'm basing this on nothing but blind optimism.........
-
Needs to improve and what better way than v Newcastle Utd...............
Time for him to show.
-
Didn't he score twice at St James last season? Whilst being booed by the Newcastle fans all game. A bit of abuse from the travelling geordies might spur him on to reach the top of his game.
Here's hoping!

Lets hope ;) May the geordies boo him at will, at least until he slams in the second.
-
Nzog has only played a handful of games judge him on a season if at all. Scored against braga people loving it and now this!
People here need to understand football better.
He was delayed in pre season fitness and is getting upto speed plus another poster has made good and obvious point hes adapting to new team and style. At the end of day hes not ash young but he is charles nzogbia.
-
Can see him having a big impact on Saturday.
-
He needs time. Remember that fairy that left to go to some club near Everton that play in red. Well he was frankly a large pile of shiny shite for best part of 7 months before he got it together. Gets a couple of goals and his confidence will send him into form, think he is a quality player, BUT we need to get him higher up the pitch IMO. He seems to be getting the ball very deep and rarely being played into positions to isolate the full back.
-
That's true, he's a very attacking midfielder, almost an auxillary forward, even more so than Ash Young probably. I certainly didn't expect to see him in the same team as well as 3 strikers as we have been playing,
-
I fancy him to have a good game tommorrow, maybe even score as no doubt the Geordies will give him a bit of stick and he's the sort that i can see getting fired up by the abuse.
-
As for the thread, he's been poor so far but needs time to settle. Merson, Young, Downing and Milner all needed a while to start showing their best form here remember.
-
Going by the rules that normally apply for us when former players play against us N'Zogbia should be due a goal tomorrow.
-
Villa 1 - Barcodes o Nzogbia .....
-
Woeful.
-
He really was awful today. I can think of only one decent run he made all game. Maybe he thought he still played for Newcastle the amount of times he passed to them?
-
No evidence whatsoever the guy is up to it, how many game is he in now, and I personally haven't seen 1 glimmer of talent, we waited until about the 67minute today before he successfully went past a player, he's a wide player, attacking, what does that tell you.
ozzjim: You mean Downing, as much as this hurts to say in his defence, those 7 months, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he have a broken leg or something like that.
-
Poorly foot.
-

aaarh, so how did that happen.......

I have to agree with you PWS. We played with 10 men and a liability called N'Zogbia. He was truely dreadful.
-
the apologists will be out in a minute, saying he needs time to settle, screw that, he needs to grow a pair and man up, earn his over-inflated wages and stop being a pussy.
-
Another truly dreadful performance today. I think we've spunked £10m on the basis of the half a dozen good games he had for Wigan.
-

That is the point, he had 1 good season at Newcastle before being sidelined in favour of Duff, then when he refused to substituted under i thin Glen Roder he was dropped from the squad altogether, then transfer listed himself.
Moody sod, petulant if he don't get his way, gets very frustrated, and won't put up with being continually taken of.
-
How the hell was he not taken off, he was awful, i dont mind a player having a bad game but he does not give a toss. Albrighton did more in 20 mins than Zog did for the whole match. His attitude stinks.
-
Looked to me as though he was trying to hard today. Ashley Young syndrome but with half the ability.
He certainly didn't look like 'he does not give a toss'.

Same here.

Shame, I thought he'd be brilliant for us. I hope he does improve and show why we paid that sort of money, but if that doesn't happen soon, he can't continue to hold down a place in the starting XI.
-

I was watching him pretty closely and cant think of another reason why he was poor and lacking in desire.
-
Lacking in desire is something that is pretty difficult to tell. It's not like he was strolling around not putting any effort in. The few times he was involved it seemed to be shooting when he shouldn't have, tracking back and supporting Warnock and giving away free kicks. Not really the sign of someone who isn't bothered.
He was poor today, I don't think anyone would disagree with that. And there could be any number of reasons why he isn't playing very well beyond "he doesn't care".
-

Agreed again.

Such as "he isn't very good".
-
What initially strikes me though is that when Ash wasn't on form for whatever reason, you could always tell he was there. It never stopped him having an influence on the game or looking like he could still produce something. As yet I'm unconvinced he's half the player Young is/was.
-

Possibly.
I'd say that he has shown enough at other clubs that suggests that he can dribble, shoot, pass and cross which suggests that the above isn't very likely.
But I'd still say it's a more likely possibility that "he doesn't give a toss"
-
he's awesome once in every 10 games and like this most of the rest of time.. Thats why manu and liverpool went for Young and Downing and not the cheaper Nzogbia. Can only hope AM can up the ratio to 2 in 10 games
-
He knew he was leaving Wigan, so what does he do? Use pre-season to get himself as fit as possible for his new club or sit on the beach until a deal is done.
Is it any surprise he's been shit with that attitude?

spot on mate, you thought we might have learnt after the Ireland fiasco.
-
Is he not fit?
-
Can somebody please confirm he actually is a winger?
-
Can somebody please confirm he actually is a winger?
No. Hutton was our winger yesterday.
-
He's been very very disapointing so far, i hope he improves. I said during the transfer window that we needed another winger as well as Zoggy and SWP would have been my choice, who aparantley has been very good so far for QPR.
In the meantime, either give him a few games in the reserves to get his fitness up and give his place to Albrighton. Ferguson would'nt think twice about dropping players who was'nt doing it, however much he paid for them.
-
I think he's A) Not fit and B) Low on confidence. Can't see us getting anything from him pre-Xmas. Problem is do you keep playing him and hope he comes good or do you drop him for a couple of games to get some confidence in the reserves?
-
Out of shape? Out of form? Or just out of sorts?
We have no real way of telling, but McLeish, who sees and assesses him every day in training, SHOULD be on his case by now. There's no way his performances are justifying his starting place so far.
FWIW I think he's a decent footballer and will come good in time, but for those who ever thought he was going to fill Ashley Youngs boots, well I would call your football knowledge into question.
-

That's the £10 million question.
The N'Zogbia who played for Wigan is not the N'Zogbia who's been playing for Villa.
Is our 'style of play' so different ??
-
He was very poor yesterday I thought, don't think he could be surprised if he's dropped. That shouldn't be the end of him of course but he hasn't made a good start
-
Can somebody please confirm he actually is a winger?
No. Hutton was our winger yesterday.
What I meant and it was a serious question, is at Wigan, did he play on the wing or behind the main striker. Are we asking him to play a role he's not used to?
-
Only my opinion but I'd drop N'Zog and bring in Ireland to sit behind the front two. There is little or no service coming from the flanks so we need to try something different.
-
Can somebody please confirm he actually is a winger?
I have seen him live in 5 of our 6 games (inc CC) this season and I have no evidence to help you here.
-
Looked to me as though he was trying to hard today. Ashley Young syndrome but with half the ability.
He certainly didn't look like 'he does not give a toss'.
That ball played in for Bent was sublime. There's a player in there somewhere if McLeish can unlock it.
-

I'd go with that too, Des. Plus you have Hutton and Bannan that can put in a good cross. What excites me more is the thought of Ireland and Bannan playing in the same side, though only based on the few minutes they played together at Braga, they really clicked, both completely on the same wavelength.
-
Whatever people say about Ireland, he will always try to put people in and be positive. If he's in the team to do that then there's no problem. If people are expecting him to charge all round the pitch making block tackles then we need someone else. FWIW, I'd give him ago and give other midfielders the job of mopping up. Perhaps N'Zogbia needs a game out.
-
I would include Ireland and Zog, I really feel if we start to drop Zog from the squad you will see a very bad attitude from him.
-
N'Zog looked shite yesterday. I've no idea why but what I do know is that I could've contributed just as much, which as far as I could tell was limited to either running straight at the nearest defender or misplacing a pass (through-ball to Gabby for Bent's open goal miss aside).
-

Would you except a 3 year contract with a pay scale remuneration tied into performance of 50k a week , if so, turn up with your boots on Tuesday night.....thang yow!!!!

I don't know what you were watching but the 'misplaced' pass was a sublime pass to Stan who put it on a plate for Bent to miss. Also, he set Gabby up for a shot early in the second-half which whistled just wide and he got to the bye-line late on and crossed and it was almost turned in by Bent (he got the groin injury at that point) I know he doesn't look up to speed yet but the guy's quality who can turn a match with a piece of magic. Ironically, he played his best game against Braga in the pre-season friendly and scored the equaliser. He'll come good soon.

I've got the same agent as NRC and he tells me there are Champions League clubs queueing up to sign me, so double it to £100k per week and we're talking!

Subline pass? You should be @Adam's agent. It was a good pass, an even better run by Petrov. As for his late on cross from the bye-line, it's argueable he should have put the ball in earlier. I think he suffered yesterday with the lack of space down the right side, it was very congested. Albrighton when he came on had acres to himself down the left.
-
He looks to be enjoying himself about as much as I've enjoyed his contribution to our team so far this season.
He looks totally out of sorts.
Hopefully this indifferent form won't last too much longer as we really need what he can offer to the team when he is on form.
-
He is a very talented player as we have all seen having watched him for Newcastle and Wigan over the years he usually makes life hell for us. He is just a typical signing once they sign for us they suddenly change and become different players - for the worse.
-
If he's not fit, why is he playing ? When we have a better option in Albrighton on the bench.
-

Exactly
I mean fuck me how long does it take for a professional footballer to get fit???
-
Was complete garbage on saturday apart from that good ball to Petrov.
I thought playing against Newcastle might have inspired him to play a bit better but it didn't.
Really disappointed in him so far.
-
Anyone worried this could be the managers version of MON's Petrov signing?
Petrov was the first big name MON signed, and was probably part of the agreement for MON coming, as he was signed just before the transfer window closed that season.
The current manager states to the board that we have to get N'zogbia. And he is played regardless of how he performs.
(I am obviously discounting Given's signing, as we didn't actually have a first choice goalkeeper).
-
It hasn't been good so far, but give the guy a chance.
-
Absolute tripe today he was. He can't seem to run with the ball, can't go past players, cant cross, can't tackle and gave away a stupid free kick from which in the second phse of play Herd was sent off.
Waste of £10m IMO.
-
Jenas has been more effective than N'Zogbia so far
-
I'd have been more use in the #10 shirt today, and i'm shit these days.
-

Some sign of progress would be nice but Zog seems to be getting worse with each game
-
Faceless performance today, once again. I would be ecstatic if he could find his form, but there just doesn't seem to be the willingness from him to get involved. I would be happier to see Marc playing every week, he has his faults but at least he would play with passion.

Agree. When a player is struggling confidence wise, the minimum is to work hard and tough it out. He doesn't do that and that is shameful. I thought he was an embarrassment today and rather too keen to get off the pitch.

I agree about Albrighton (although criticised by certain quarters). However, some plebs stated before the season that it was a 'job done' mentality signing N'zogbia to replace Downing, with Albrighton replacing Young.
The fact that we have played at times with neither on the pitch this season, means we haven't properly replaced either of those players, and it shows.
-
He's a piss poor replacment for any of the players we lost this summer. I said he had 1 good game in 10 but i'm beginning to think i seriously overestimated his consistency
-
I'm sure we are going to get the "well it took Downing x amount of time to settle in" fact is N'Zogbia will never be the player that Young or Downing are and in fact its unfair to the player to brandish him with that level, he simply hasn't got it in him, not every wide player out there is an Ashley Young some blokes are just very average players, Newcastle, Wigan, if he was anywhere near as good as some imagined he would already be in top flight.
-
Shocking again, I wasn't wrong when I started this thread, I'm hoping we'll all be singing his praises come may but I doubt it
-
N'Zogbia is shit. A shit sandwich without the bread. Shit. Shit. Shit.
-

Correct. He has been a total waste of money and needs to sort it. I don't want to see his transfer fee / wages pissed down the drain. He must come good soon.
-
He doesn't look arsed to me Dave, he's going to collect his £60k a week regardless so why does he give a fuck
-
I've seen him be a good player at other clubs, so I won't write him off yet. But the reality is replacing Young and Downing with N'Zogbia is unacceptable.
-
I've been out in Wigan tonight with three Wigan fans (hence the language), and none of them had a good word to say about him.
-
Despite the fact they would have gone down last season without him and that their fans at VP the other week game him a fair ovation when he came on?
That said, I still think he's been dismal for us so far.
edited because I cant spell!

He was outstanding for much of the season last year for them, so agreed. I think he can be an asset but he needs to start performing.

A night out in Wigan eh Risso ? - must have taken at least 20 minutes to cover the night spots?

There's the Wigan Casino :)
N'Zogbia is not playing in a passing team, we're a long ball outfit - he's not fitting in with the 'style' of play we have adopted.
-
He's coming to deep, I feel. We need to get him on the ball in the last third where he can take players on but at present he's got 2 or 3 players in from of him every time he gets on the ball.
-
For me he dose'nt get wide enough. I can't remember him crossing the ball into the box from a wide position too many times since he's been here. Young and Downing used to hug the touchline and he needs to start doing that too.
In the meantime though, i'd start giving Albrighton another go.

I've not been in may town centres that size with quite so many pubs crammed in.
-
Even though he pretty much kept them up on his own at the end of last season?
-
It may help if we don't keep trying to put the ball on Bent's head from just in front of our own area, and actually gave N'Zogbia the ball to try and do something.
-

aye. at least with albrighton you know he can get get an accurate cross in.

Can he? I seem to recall everyone of his crosses being overhit on Saturday. Then again he needs to find his range as he'snot getting enough game time at the moment.
-
N'Zogbia has been getting seriously abused on twitter lately.. can't imagine thats helping the situation. I hope he comes good.
-
At previous clubs he used take on players far more particularly one on one. He hasnt the confidence to do that at the moment. His workrate needs to improve too. Didnt he used play left back or wing back for Newcastle at times and he was like a Duracell bunny? battery seems to have gone flat for him so far but wouldnt write him off just yet. A goal would get the self belief kicking again.
-

Maybe his form for the majority of last season doesn't sit well with them?
I've no doubt that he's a talented player, but i'm starting to think he only performs when it suits him.
Its going to be very difficult to get the best out of him.
-
I think he was just a McLeish must have. He got knocked back at Small Heath and the decision to buy him to play for Villa was just a personal thing by our manager to prove a point. Like when your wife gets the hots for a handbag you say she cannot have, it is nailed on she will buy it just to prove she has a mind of her own and money of her own then chuck it in the bottom of the wardrobe.
N'Zogbia looks to be well on his way to the wardrobe.

Not sure about that. We did need to replace Downing and Young, and there wasn't a lot of players we could afford who were available. N'Zogbia was the most obvious candidate.

The cross he put over for Gabby's equaliser at Everton shows he can do it. At least you'll know that he'll stay out wide and take players on, which is what N'Zogbia should be doing.
At the end of the day, we have a striker who's capable of scoring 25 goals a season for us and so far this season, we've created next to nothing for him. If that carries on, we'll be down the wrong end of the table in May.
-
nzogbia is not an out and out winger though like albrighton is , charles likes to come inside often and ply more central whereas marc is undoubtedly a wide man.
He needs to deliver and quickly, its not as if hes come to a different league or country and we need to see much better from him and soon-we cannot carry passengers.
-
We've got one of the best 6yd box strikers in the league in Darren Bent and he's being starved of service.Whether it is an arm around the shoulder or a kick up the arse he needs,Mcleish needs to sort N'Zogbia out quickly. So far he has done nothing for me to think he's good enough.
-
Always looked a good tricky player everywhere else , looks so ordinary for villa ( does he room mate with Stephen Ireland ) hope he comes good , although not to hopeful at present as still got this stigma of him being awkward character .....off the pitch
-
Charles Nzogbia was omitted from the squad for the home match against Manchester United because 'he breached club rules'
Apparently he crossed the half way line in his last match

Why oh why is this signing screaming Sasa Curcic at me?
-
Whatever the reasons, he is still near enough £10 million worth of a player who isn't getting on he pitch, even though we are playing like a team who have just met each other on the morning before each game.
This along with Ireland etc, means we might soon seemingly have spent as much on transfers for players sitting in the stand as on the pitch.
-

Good point well made and just like him we all wanted Charles at the time yet it is panning out to be a right balls up
-
he was never even near the class of say Young or Downing and i did find it odd at the time he was rated so highly on here, but then we do tend to overate players in the immediate glow of signing them. Sadly so far he's not even been the average player i expected
-
I think that's because if we were expecting another Ash or Downing style creator, then we were barking up the wrong tree. Looking at his stats at Wigan, he was always more of a scorer than creator. And was given the freedom to be such as he was their best player. At Villa, he's no longer the big fish and hasn't adjusted yet.
I've mentioned this before, but maybe we need to re-think his position and play him behind Bent, where he'd hopefully get more freedom to get into the box? Something like:-
- Herd - Petrov -
Marc - N'Zog - Gabby
- Bent -
-
He scored from a few free kicks for Wigan. That is where we should try to build his confidence. It is essential that we get the best out of him but that will be difficult while so many of the other players are playing so pathetically.
-
I heard he was left out today due to another breach of club discipline, anyone else heard anything?

Heel injury

Nope, but here's an unoriginal thought ... with SW playing so frequently like one of the muppets that adorns our posts on here, why not try him at left back? It's where he started his career after all!

That's an interesting idea. He'd certainly be useful going forward.
Can't say I've ever seen him make a tackle though..

The best full backs are often wingers like Swaine or Gidman but Zog has no sense of positioning and a tackle with the power of a wilted lettuce.
Albrighton is the type of player more suited to this role IMO but I would bet we have better options if we really put an effort into finding the right solution.
