Just received an official text message saying Aston Villa have signed Enda Stevens, a 21 year defender from Shamrock Rovers who will join Villa in January 2012.
Welcome Enda!
-
Sounds like a name for a planet. Anyway, welcome to Aston Villa.
-
way.
Welcome Enda.
-
Headline writer's dream:
Enda the road
Enda the window
Enda the big spending
But, welcome Enda. I hope you're the Enda the search for a decent left back.
-
There's always a bit of romance about signing a player for peanuts from a lower league team or from a lower ranking league, if he's anywhere near as good as the last full back we signed that was'nt a recognised premier league player then i'll be happy.
-
I'll have to keep an eye on Rovers games between here and January to see how he's getting on.

And if he's as good as the last deadline day signing punt on an unknown from one of Europe's crappier leagues (ie Salifou) then I won't.

As optmistic as ever I see!

There's nothing to be optimistic about under Lerner's ownership.
-
Welcome to Villa.
-
He's not the one who scored that amazing goal in Europe is he? Either way, welcome.
-
If he's not joining till January, why announce it now? It's not as if we've signed him and loaned him back, is it?
-
Welcome Edna, about as exciting as it gets
-
I'm giddy as **** about this. Welcome Edna, and good luck with the Shamrock Rovers euro adventure.

Welcome to the villa Enda!
-
It's the enda the world as we know it.
What a depressing summer for all Villa fans. The worse since the close season of 1985.
We're going one way and one way only.
Good luck Enda, but this club ain't what it used to be.
-
Kevin Doyle, Shane Long and Wes Hoolihan of Norwich were all bought from Irish league clubs for pittance and then sold on at a huge profit. Long in particular only cost Reading 60,000 pounds a few years ago, they sold him to West Brom for 7m. Paul McGrath started his career at St. Patrick's Athletic so don't be too sceptical!
-
Welcome to the villa Enda!
Welcome to the Holte Enda!
-
Welcome to the villa Enda!
Welcome to the Holte Enda!
Very good DeKuip!
-
If we start being linked with a player called Ontil next I am going to start getting suspicious.
-
Welcome to the villa Enda!
Welcome to the Holte Enda!
Very good DeKuip!
Good quip from dekuip!
-
Get out Enda while you still can....
-
This window is the enda of the road for randy !
-
''He sounds like he should be Prime Minister of New Zealand'', mate of mine sent me that when I told him who we signed.
-
Sounds like a Sun headline for Shakin' Steven's retirement. If he becomes as big a cult hero as Eamonn Deacy that will do for me.
-
Enda Enda Stevens...with a namee like that he is eminently qualified to be a future General Secretary of the UN.
-
I am fairly confident that "there's only one Enda Stevens" may have an element of truth in it.
I'm still working on a quip about getting our Enda away.
-
Yippee I ay, yippee I oh, Holte Enda in the sky
-
He wanted to finish the season at Shamrock and play in there europa league run before coming to us.
-
Great! Champions League here we come!
-
No idea whether he is any good or not, but at least I can see a logic with this one.
We don't have any obvious candidates for the position emerging from the ranks, nor do we have the money to buy quality off the peg.
Worth the punt though. I just wish we had made a few more deals like this.
-
Why not?!
-
"Keep right on to the enda the road ..."?
No, I thought not.
Great to see us taking a punt on a potential star (the last one we punted on - the Togolese Zidane - cost us a small fortune in wages, I suppose): Will Enda be the Irish Roberto Carlos?
-
If it doesn't work it's not like we're spending £40k a week on him (BEYE)
-
This lad is gonna be bloody brilliant. I'll never forget how awesome the ewoks were against those legions of imperial stormtroopers...
-
I think this is the sort of 'out of the box' low risk scouting and signing a lot said we should have done more of under MON.
I'm pretty neutral about it and I guess we'll just see if he works out or not.
-
The barman in my local is called Enda. The jokes lasted about 2 minutes before you realised he must have heard them thousands of times and he was serving you your beer!
-
''He sounds like he should be Prime Minister of New Zealand'', mate of mine sent me that when I told him who we signed.
He sounds even more like a potential Taoiseach of Ireland. (Current Irish leader is Enda Kenny).
-

No, that'll come around November time I reckon when those loveable scouse rougues start asking "£20m, but he won't put a tackle in???"

You beat me to it! I was just going to post that!
Enda is a very common name here but I can see how outside Ireland it must seem hilarious!!
-
There's a piece in today's Irish Independent about this.
Apparently the fee is £250,000 with add ons if he breaks into the first team.
The strange thing is that the Hoops manager is a MON!!

-
There's been a few gems plucked out of the Irish league in recent years, here's hoping young Edna can add to that list.
-
Is Enda really that uncommon a name over there? That said, I've lost count of the amount of people who've had problems with my name........
-
He's certainly a looker..
-

It's a real Irish name. Even some Irish people (especially around Dublin) struggle with it, sure look at the way Enda Kenny used to be ridiculed as Edna for a time? As a name it wouldn't feature anywhere else save the odd Irish community in the UK or the US.
-
Enda Kenny used to be ridiculed because he was (is) easily ridiculed. Strange one, guess when you're so used to a name it's strange to see others find it so odd. I've about 5 or 6 mates called Enda.
-
Is anybody else old and sad enough to remember Cousin Enda played by David Kelly in the late 60's sitcom "Me Mammy" which starred Milo O'Shea?
-
Don't know anything about him, but from McLeish's quotes he's been scouted for a while.
Let's hope he can be our Seamus Coleman.
-
I hope he is our Eamonn Deacey!
-
I like it when we take a punt like this.
Welcome Enda.
-
If you're going to hope he becoomes our whoever why not set the bar higher than Eamon Deacy and Seamus Coleman?
I hope he becomes our Roy Keane.
-
Can we split the difference and say the new Steve Staunton?
-

I remember the programme and my Dad loved Milo O'Shea (I pretended to like it to stay up an extra half hour), but I can't recall Cousin Enda. I think David Kelly later reinvented himself as Dermot Kelly, but I may be wrong in that - it's what my dad used to tell us when he was watching Robin's Nest anyway.

I thought it was Dermot as well. Yootha Joyce and Ray McAnally also featured.
-
For anyone in ireland interested the Rovers Partizan Belgrade game is on Setanta at the moment if you want to have a look at him
-
Paul McGrath started life at St Patricks in the Irish league
-
From the last few minutes at least it look like he has a decent cross on him. Promising.
-

Yup I'm watching it too, he looks like Rovers' best player!
Good deal.
-
They're really singing his praises too! They're saying he has the quality to play at a higher level now! Very impressive!
-
Why do I keep seeing the name Edna whenever I see the title of this thread?
I know nothing about the lad but would like to wish him all the best for the future.
-
He should be called Edna. From the moment I saw the link I have called him Edna, and I still vision him as the little mad woman from Incredibles.
-
If you're going to hope he becoomes our whoever why not set the bar higher than Eamon Deacy and Seamus Coleman?
Cos they're all full backs I suppose.
-
That said, I've lost count of the amount of people who've had problems with my name........
Do they give the 'G' a hard sound as opposed to 'J'? That would do my head in. Lauren Laverne went down in my estimation when she was talking to the singer from the Sultans of Ping a few months back on 6 Music and pronounced his bandmate ''Grrr''. The singer had to stifle a laugh.
-
Can we split the difference and say the new Steve Staunton?
Rather have the new Paul McGrath
-
the new Keith Fahey perhaps - McLeish brought in Fahey from the relative obscurity of St Pats to be a key player in Bham's promotion a couple of years back. Fahey had got rave reviews from a performance against Hertha Berlin is some Europa League qualifier and Enda Stevens seems to have followed the same path into McLeish's radar.
Fahey is a derided player on here but I've always found him a tidy player though certainly lightweight. Has done well for Ireland too in this campaign with the winner off the bench in Armenia and other tidy appearances in Slovakia where he made the goal for St.Ledger and a decent cameo at home to Macedonia. He is out for the game tomorrow though.
-

I tend to think of the evil television in Willo o' the wisp.

And a big a twat as his predecessor! You've upset me now just by mentioning him the lying bastard!
-

Bingo. When I was working in London, my director called me Grrr, and it went on too long that I was too embarrassed to correct him on the pronunciation. I've now started to pre-empt any problems during introductions when I'm abroad by explaining that it's the shortened version of Gerard.
cdvillafan said that he first thought that it was some reference to Rangers!
-

Keane has played in every outfield position I think, so, I still live in hope.
Re: the unusual to some first names for Irish footballers. I think this will continue for the forseeable future as it seems to be the fashion over there now to bestow upon offspring the most authentic hard to pronounce Irish name possible.

Have a go at pronouncing the following: Fiachra, Meadhbh, Ailbhe, Conchubhar, Oisin, Proinsias, Beibhinn, Blathnaid, Caoimhe, Orlaith.
-
It's quite a middle class thing here to give your child an authentic Gaelic name. You don't see too many people called Niamh, Ferdia, Stiofán, Ailín or Risteard in working class areas!
-

As well as sending your kids to the local Gaelscoil (Irish speaking schools) just so they don't have to mix with kids of different ethnic backgrounds.

cynic alert and urban myth - the gaelscoileanna also tend to be secular which is a big reason why they are popular. People from places like the Netherlands can easily speak two languages so I dont think the rise of the Irish speaking schools is some middle class conspiracy anyway.
The hardcore gaelic names might be the preserve of the Gaeilge snobs but names like Sean, Enda and Niamh are as common as muck in Ireland.
think thats 5 Irish players at Villa now.

Hands up on the cynic call I'm very good at it and sadly the thing about cynics in my humble opinion, that I've learned over a lifetime is that they're seldom wrong. It comes from being lied to by so many different people about so many different things. Back to to real reason for posting about the Gaelscoil thing whilst agreeing that they tend to be secular in the main it's a contentious subject where I live. I have friends and relatives that are teachers in mainstream schools and my daughter is a teacher in an underprivelaged area in Dublin, and while I accept your opinion on the urban myth scenario most of the people I have spoken to around here are of the opinion that I have quoted. I'm sorry if I can't see it your way but as you quite rightly point out I'm a cynic. At my age I think I've earned the right.

Six pages and he's not even here yet...........he'd better be good. ;D
-

Given, Dunne, Clark (sort of), Ireland, Lowry (sort of) and now Stevens = 6!
I think we also have a few more youngsters who are Irish - Devine, Burke and Drennan and possibly others.
-
Gaelscoil - Good band-whatever happened to the heavy metal gals?
-
Is Enda really that uncommon a name over there? That said, I've lost count of the amount of people who've had problems with my name........
Is it Ger with a soft G - as in jer.
OR
Ger with a hard G - as in Grrrr?
-
Right first time!
And as a matter of interest, who on here thought it was the latter?
-
Right first time!
And as a matter of interest, who on here thought it was the latter?
Must admit, I thought your first name was Regan and you were a Rangers fan. Shows how on the ball I am at times!
Oh and Welcome Enda Wiggin.
-
Right first time!
And as a matter of interest, who on here thought it was the latter?
I thought it was short for Gerard, and therefore Jer. Although that doesn't stop me reading it as Ger!
-
Every time I see the lads name I think of Edna Krabappel from the Simpsons. Certainly hope he's a better footballer than her though.
-
Right first time!
And as a matter of interest, who on here thought it was the latter?
I wasn't sure either way, but howdy Jer!
-
Definitely Jer. Grrr would have been distinctly odd!
-
Aussies also cant pronounce Ger properly. I settled for being called Jarred over there. It was close enough for me.
I usually tackle it by saying its Ger, short for German. That normally does the trick.I have also been questioned about being a Rangers fan on here, considering my location says Co. Cork does make me wonder a little do people know anything about Ireland and Irish politics ?
I'm not a Celtic fan either by the way.
-
Maybe ''Ger'' is phonetically too close to ''Jerry'' (as in ze Germans) for the name to have caught on too much in Britain?
Ger (Regan) you should have pronounced ''Germany'' with a hard 'g' anytime the country came up in conversation when working in London.
-
I read somewhere as part of the deal, we're playing Shamrock at their ground at some point, presumably pre-season. Not sure how true it is though.

Seconded! Hopefully we don't lose 1-0 this time! As for young Enda, Ireland could have done with him last night. I thought Ward was dreadful at left back.

He was poor, then again alot of them were. Dunne was o.k. Given too but he was lucky to get away with his throwing the ball out,it slipping from his hands and then picking it up again. Silly free kick to give away.

Yup, was a stupid free kick to give away and Dunne was solid but caught badly for pace one in the second half. Given's groin seemed to be troubling him again too. Here's hoping it doesn't cause any problems for club or country this season.

Pedant Alert: Shamrock Rovers are never shortened to ''Shamrock''. It's ''Rovers'' or the full thing.

Sad news for Enda (http://www.shamrockrovers.ie/news/35-news/2160-condolences-to-stevens-family).
Surprised the site isn't more specific than just "a family member".
-
Got a good song for him.
To the tune by Enya
Play away, play away play away, from Anfield to Old Trafford, from Villa Park to Carrowow Play Away play away play away.
-
It'll be "There's Only One Enda Stevens". There's no way our younger fans will allow a quadro-syllabic player to enter the pitch without being serenaded by that repetative drone.
-
the new Keith Fahey perhaps - McLeish brought in Fahey from the relative obscurity of St Pats to be a key player in Bham's promotion a couple of years back. Get the story right.
Agent Fahey was on our books, made one first team appearance before we sent him off to St Pats where he sat tight and waited for his mission. Our 'sleeper' was finally spotted by McLeish where after he kept his head down, not grabbing the headlines, the Noses thought he was a great find.
In May of this year Agent Fahey got this long awaited mission, it was to be carried out in the final day of the season at White Hart Lane. Agent Fahey waited until the 93rd minute before getting a vital touch that deflected the ball into the Rags net, sending them down for what hopefully will be forever.
You say "Fahey is a derided player on here", I'd say he's a bloody legend.

Would be good for us to send him our condolences. I guess we can start that on here, very best wishes at such a difficult time to you and your family Enda.
-
Spurs v Shamrock Rovers live on channel 5 at 1930 this evening.
A chance for us to have a look at our Enda in the flesh.
Come on you Hoops!!
-
When you think of this do you also hear the voice of Brian Blessed shouting 'Edna'!
-
On the bench I think. Related to his sister's death or is he perhaps not a regular?!!
-
I think he started pretty much all the games before his sister died, I noticed he didn't play for them the other day. It's possible that they are breaking him back in gently or maybe whoever took his place has made himself undroppable?
-
He's on.
-
He's on.
Has he scored yet?
-
Not yet...
-
An Irish league outfit winning against a Premiership team in Europe...never thought I would see the day.
-
1-1
Rom Pav.
-
Ah well....good while it lasted.
-
2-1
Defoe
-
Ah Bugger.
-
3-1
Dos Santos
Good goal
-
Good defending there from Stevens
-
Didnt watch the game - what was the general feeling on first look at him ?
-
Could probably have done better for the second goal, Defoe's header.
Nothing special, he'll clearly have to step it up a lot if he's going to compete for Warnock's place.
-

How come Ronnie?
-
There is an interview with Enda in today's Irish Mail on Sunday. Sorry , I can't find the link.
It contains the following...."The challenge of playing alongside his heroes Richard Dunne and Shay Given is one that excites him."If I break in it will be financial security""... Oh well at least he is being honest I suppose .
