Post by: pooligan on August 31, 2011, 02:50:33 AM
Our threadbear squad got even thinner with the news that Eric Lichaj is out injured and is expected to be out at least 4 months. Also i read that Bent missed training with the England squad yesterday with a groin problem. Given is also carrying a injury. If we don't sign a few players by tonight, i can see us in big trouble as the season goes on

Club in injured player shocker. Inevitable this would happen. It always does when you haven't the cover.

What is Eric's injury ?

MLS Soccer (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/08/30/american-exports-lichaj-sidelined-hip-injury) appears to be the source of the story:

Quote
AMSTERDAM — Aston Villa defender Eric Lichaj could miss as much as four months' time after a Tuesday evening exam showed a labral tear in his hip, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

A source explained that the US fullback had carried the injury since making his season debut with the winner in a Carling Cup victory over Hereford United, but an initial check left the club thinking it was simply a standard knock.

After experiencing pain in Monday's reserves tilt, Lichaj was taken back for a closer inspection, which revealed the hip socket cartilage tear.

Meanwhile, MLSsoccer.com has learned from an English source that former loan employers Leeds United were planning to make a transfer offer for Lichaj before the injury diagnosis. Though immaterial at this point, it can be noted that Aston Villa had snubbed all previous approaches made for the 22-year-old American this summer.

I did wonder why Herd was selected ahead of him.

I'm pretty sure a player is just as likely to get injured if you have good cover as if you have no cover.

I hope that Lichaj recovers from his injury quickly and fully. It's tough luck for the lad. It's got to be that old Villa curse again! Just like last season when Andreas Wiemann was showing promise and then injures his leg.

I thought Lichaj had a chance to break into the team this season with Walker back at Spuds. I have no doubt that Hutton and Herd between them will cover the right back position very well which will make it tough for Lichaj on his return.

From all accounts Lichaj was highly appreciated at Leeds and the timing of this injury could not come at a worse time for AVFC and may likely cause another loan spell for EL when he gets back to fitness.
