Post by: Mark H on August 25, 2011, 12:10:48 PM
According to the world renowned Talksport ! - we have the 3rd loudest fans in the Premeirship , only beaten by Man Ure and The Red Scouse  !

Smethwick fans are actually the loudest, the problem is that only dogs are able to hear them.

These figures appear to have been based on home fans.  Away fans make more noise if measured decibels per fan.  Since when did Manchester United fans make an appreciable noise at Old Trafford.  They are usually drowned by the away end, especially when we are there!

Last seasons sighs, moans and groans must have been pretty audible on the pitch then!

One of the responses to the Talksport article gives a good explanation for just how hopeless the analysis is.

As an aside some of the pictures are priceless.  Check out Geordie Man at No 7, and the tee shirt on one of our erstwhile neighbours at a heady 16th.  Obsessed - nah not too much.

Interesting comment recognising the acoustic issue at Villa Park that we've known ourselves for years:

Quote
I work in Nightclubs & it is definately much easier to fill a smaller venue with noise than a larger one.. you need loads less speakers & Amps in a small venue though it's actually staggering how much more power/speakers you need for a slightly larger venue.. Basically space kills volume which is why it's much easier to have a loud volume from a small football stand with a lower roof etc than a big one with a higher roof.. The exception being Old Trafford as it is acoustically better due to the oval shape & lack of gaps between the stands & roof so no surprise it scored high on the decibel reading. The hardest type of stadium to fill with noise would be somewhere like Villa Park due to its size, high roofs, non continuous roofing & gaps in the corners between stands so the decibel reading there is actually quite exceptional. The smaller stadiums should be louder really especially the oval all enclosed types.

I am surprised by this, did it say what game it's from? Probably the booing after the Wolves games... the only time when all four stands made some noise!

The wraparound grounds lack atmosphere as the previously noisy fans who sat in their old ground's kop/holte equivalent don't congregate in the same sections and get dispersed throughout the ground.

I don't pay any attention to such survey's as they are so ambiguous it really tells us nothing.  How do we know that it's not the away fans making the majority of the noise (which it most likely is) and therefore not a reflection on the loudness of the home fans at said stadium at all?  Also, as mentioned by a previous poster, the lay out of the ground plays a massive role in the noise levels as does the teams performance.  It's a lot easier to be noisy when you're watching your Man U team winning 18 out of 19 home games than it is watching us struggle to win even half as many.

These surveys are completely useless, it's very difficult to assess these things accurately.  I know this because I myself conducted a survey to find out which is the worst, most amateurish radio station in the world with the thickest, most objectionable presenters and the most brain-dead listeners, and the winner - by a country mile - was TalkSport.  This is clearly bollocks, as it would take an improvement of at least 1000% before TalkSport could even compete for that sort of accolade.

I can see you fitting right in here.

Good move by Nasri in seeking atmosphere by moving from 11th loudest to 13th. Somehow I think  size of his wallet will pierce his ear drums!

Did you see his comments about looking forward to playing in front of more passionate fans at Man City? What a way to treat people who helped pay your wages. He's in my official 'twat' book now.

Didnt NASA consider training astronauts at St Andrews so they could acclimatise to working in somewhere with no atmosphere?

I always felt when we get behind our team we produce a noise that most others can't match so I can see why we are third on the list.

I think it's true, last season my ears were ringing from the incessant "For f*cks sake Villa!" that I was shouting!

What a bloody silly 'survey'.

I mean is it sustained noise or a simple decible reading after a home goal for eg?

Which, I assume, it must be. So how can a stadium of 40k make as much noise as 76K ? Where are the microphones? They can't be in the middle of the pitch can they.

We need answers. Actually we need to ignore and forget this tripe.
