Should be a routine win but important not to get too complacent about this. According to Hereford's website (http://www.herefordunited.co.uk/page/AwayTicketsDetail/0,,10835~2421773,00.html) they've got the Upper North stand with an initial allocation of 3,700 tickets so it will be a bit of a cup final for them. I'd still go:

Guzan
Lichaj Dunne(c) Clark Warnock
Ireland Gardner Makoun Bannan
N'Zogbia
Fonz

Subs: Marshall Young Collins Petrov Albrighton Gabby Bent

6-1 go as strong as possible apart from Given, Gabby and anybody else with knocks. Guzan, Lichaj, Collins, Clark, Warnock, Makoun, Delph, N'zogbia, Bannan, Albrighton, Bent

Guzan, Lichaj, Baker, Clark, Collins, N'Zogbia, Bannan, Makoun, Albrighton, Ireland, Delfouneso... is what I'd pick, with Bent and some other stars on the bench in case we find ourselves in trouble.

I worry he might pick Beye and play him at left-back, where he is even more useless than at right back, to accomodate Lichaj and rest Collins.

After an edgy first half, we'll beat them in the second.

Three-nil... Delfouneso (48), Bannan (55), Clark (87).

I would like to crow-bar Ireland, Bannan and the fonz into the team whilst keeping the same formation.  This might be difficult as Ireland and Bannan are both best in that central role in my opinion.  I'll go:

---------------Guzan--------------
Licaj---Collins-----Clark---Warnock
------Makoun-----Delph------------
Albrighton---Ireland---Nzogbia---
---------------Fonz---------------

Planned subs:
1. Heskey for Fonz
2. Bannan for Ireland (Ireland to play versus Wolves)
3. Gardner/Burke for someone

FW: Delfouneso

Hope to see Ireland, Bannan, Albrighton, Makoun and a few fringe players given some much needed game time. If they can get their names on the scoresheet then would give them a great confidence boost.

A comfortable no fuss win please to build the momentum.

Delfouneso

4-0 win.

I'd like to see Gabby start this one to continue his confidence building.  No point in keeping Fonz in the side IMO as I seriously doubt he will never make it, how many seasons as 4th/5th choice forward before he steps up? Sell him as soon as I say. Anyway, I wouldn't go too 2nd string as Hereford will be up for this and I'd like us to do well in the CC this year.

2-1 to us.

Bent

I think Given, Young and Gabby are all carrying knocks so would rest them all.

How about:
                  Guzan

Lichaj - Beye - Clark - Baker

Albrighton - Hogg - Makoun - Bannan

                  Ireland

                 Delfouneso

SUBS: Marshall, Warnock, Collins, Gardner, Herd, Weimann, Heskey

The fonz is only just 20. 20!! Give him a chance. Albrighton and bannan had never even played before they were 21, never mind got something like 6 goals in 9 starts.

I'd play :

Guzan- lichaj, Collins, Clark, warnock - Ireland, makoun, bannan - albrighton, fonz, n'zogbia

               Delfoneuso

                          Guzan

Lichaj             Beye           Clark              Baker

                     Makoun        Gardner

Albrighton                                         Bannan

                             Ireland

                           Fonz

Beye needs game time, he might have a role this season. L Young is carrying a knock. So is Gabby and Heskey. wouldnt like to risk Bent/Collins/Dunne or Delph in a match like this.

Five nil win to the Villa.

Think a few of the squad players will get a runout here, and still think we will have more than enough for a comfortable win.

I would rest Petrov, Heskey and Bent but bring them on if needed. Would like to see Ireland, Bannan, Delfouneso, Clarke and Hogg get a start. I would also start Beye (might as well make him work at least on day a year).

Think we need to keep Given in goal though, not a fan of resting goalies. N'Zogbia needs to start so as to get more match fitness.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Hereford Pre-Match Thread
Post by: PeterWithesShin on August 21, 2011, 08:18:58 PM
I'd 100% rest Given as in both league games he's had to stop taking goal kicks.

I reckon we should play our youth reserve team to make it fair on Hereford.

9-0. They lost 0-4 at home to Macclesfield last week for pete's sake and had Russell Hoult in goal, he must be in his fifties. We'll take them to the cleaners.

Our next tie is hereford and i believe that despite expected changes to line up the formation to stay same.
Against herefords in league cup tie:
guzan at gk
lichaj or herd at right back getting forward.
Beye and clarke central.
With baker at left back
MIDFIELD of the 4-2-3-1
the two of gardener and makoun
In front of this bannan come in as one of the 3 AM along with albirghton and the ireland.
The fonz upfront.

With this can look at alternative options in these roles.

That said i wouldnt expect alex mac to make wholesale changes as cup is important competition
ireland or bannan in the 2 of midfield would also be interesting
say heskey albrighton and nzogbia as the 3 and bent up top

If we can't make a few changes and comfortably beat the league's 91st team at present then we are in trouble!

I am confident of a 4-1/5-1 win and would like to see Guzan, Beye, Makoun, Ireland, Albrighton and Delfouneso come in for Given, Young, Petrov, N'Zogbia, Agbonlahor and Bent

Keep Bent and Zoggy on the bench in the (hopefully) unlikely event we need them!

I think AM has seen that we need more bite in midfield hence why he is playing Delph, and we cant accommodate both Petrov and Makoun without losing a forward outlet. Petrov is also the most experienced out of the two of them and has so far deserved his place.

Get a few goals up then take off the key players

Hope we treat the game seriously because i think this will be a really enjoyable game for us to practice and show some good skills and football, I would put out a serious team in order for them to get some game time, I would put out Bent, Gabby (if not injured) Heskey and Delf to get in amongst the goals and ready for Wolves.

Should be a bit of a treat hopefully.

I think it's virtually impossible to predict a team, other than the obvious of saying 'here will be changes'.  Personally, I'd like to see Bannan get a start, but other than that I think Given, Gabby and Young will be rested/not risked.  One of Collins or Dunne to play with Clark.  Think Bent might play and get taken off if we're a few goals to the good.  Albrighton to start and I think he'll play N'Zog for match fitness.  So....

Guzan

Lichaj
Clark
Dunne/Collins
Warnock

Makoun
Hogg

Albrighton
Bannan
N'Zogbia

Bent

Result wise I'll 3or4-1 with them getting a late consolation goal.

I wouldn't risk more than two or three players who will get a start against Wolves and definitely would not pick Given, Luke Young or Gabby who seem to be carrying knocks or Bent as if he gets injured we would be in trouble.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Hereford Pre-Match Thread
Post by: pedro25 on August 22, 2011, 02:24:03 PM
Injuries aside I'd keep the back 5 the same for continuity, but change the front 6, thus;
Given
Young Dunne Collins Warnock
Makoun Clark
Albrighton Ireland Bannan
Delfouneso

The usual front 6 I'd have on the bench, except bent, I'd rest him entirely and get Gardner on the bench and give him 30 mins or so.

One nil Villa, Gardner.

Bent has to play.
Why?

He's our best goal scorer, tomorrow's the sort of game that will get tough if we haven't stuck one in in the first half hour.

They're gonna defend deep, so the first goal will probably be a scrappy one. Start Bent with the kids and hopefully it's 2-0 by half time, we can take him off and the kids can express themselves.

I'm not so sure.  Although I hate pretty much hate the phrase, this is 'their cup final' and the players usually want to prove they can play on such a big stage.  I'd expect them to have a go at us and try and enjoy the game.

Bent needs to start so that we break their spirit with a quick goal. Hopefully up by 2 or more by half time and get him off sharpish at the break. Having won this cup last AM won't be wanting to give it up easily, so I don't expect any more than 5 or 6 changes to the starting line up from Saurday.

Perhaps the authorities thought clubs would be more likely to field a strong team if they have an extra day's recovery period. I agree I'd rather play Wednesday though. It will throw my whole week out, I will wake up Wednesday thinking I only have two days left at work before grim realisation sets in.

Regretably, we don't have the same selection problems.

We have a total of 24 players at The Club.  One is on loan at Gloucester, two are transfer listed and unlikely to be involved and five are injured.

Naturally, we will be full of beer optimism ;)

Tosser of the highest order....and that has nothing to do with his move to Conference Bound Slopbury Town.  Ran The Club into the ground and walked off with full pockets.  If he was on fire and I was bustin' I'd happily water the dandilions instead.

Don't believe the media hype about him saving the Club...the fans raised the money to pay off the pressing debts and he left us in a worse state than when he arrived.

Shrewsbury and Turner....a marriage made in the sewer.  May they rot together.

Well, you did ask ;D

think we'll win 3-1 again.

Just received a phone call from the ticket office asking if I wanted to attend the game (along with the Wolves and Newcastle fixtures) and was encouraged to buy the tickets there and then because they were expecting it to be "quite busy". It was a very informal phone call the type you might receive from a mate. Is it me or does that seem incredibly small time? Trying to drum up business over the phone? Seems like we might have to get used to 32,000 (or less) most weekends this season

Agree with all that Frank.

ExLandlord, was wondering what opinions are on Graham Turner... cos there are some parallels with the McLeish to Villa move! Has supporter opinion to him thawed, or do you consider him to be a "Judas"?

Tosser of the highest order....and that has nothing to do with his move to Conference Bound Slopbury Town.  Ran The Club into the ground and walked off with full pockets.  If he was on fire and I was bustin' I'd happily water the dandilions instead.

Don't believe the media hype about him saving the Club...the fans raised the money to pay off the pressing debts and he left us in a worse state than when he arrived.

Shrewsbury and Turner....a marriage made in the sewer.  May they rot together.

Well, you did ask ;D

If you're curious to know more about HUFC, this site is worth a read ;)

I tipped Heskey to score at the weekend ( of course I wasn't being serious ) so for this one I will predict that Ireland and Jean 2 will get off the mark in a 4-1 win.

Graham Turner was one of the worst managers we've ever had. He was completely out of his depth in the old 1st division and was sacked before he managed to get us relegated (leaving Billy McNeill to finish the job).

I think you will find Hereford is in England.

They are Welsh because it annoys them.

You're probably confusing us with Shrewsbury Town boyo.

Them as well!
I support Tamworth as well as The Villa so have been to your fairly horrendous away end a couple of times, but always loved my visits for The Victory and the other pub over the road I can't remember the name of.

Home draws against lower league opposition will help for sure -

Comfortable 3-0 home win with Fonz bagging a brace and Ireland getting 90 mins ?!!!

Hereford have sorted free Coach travel for their fans, so 25 coaches are full.  Suggests that they had sold 1,500 ish by early today and were trying to get their fans to buy tickets up to 4 PM today or face queueing up at VP tomorrow night.

Pretty decent show I'd say.

Been a long time since i've seen us play a Welsh team at VP. A 5-1 stroll for Villa reserves.

Welsh?
Yep, definitely Welsh.

Are you not counting Cardiff two seasons ago then ?

Except it's in England. All this petty crap like Newcastle being Scottish is just plain silly.

Villa team news looks like Agbonlahor/Heskey/Young could be doubtful or at least not starting tonight, restnig on bench

Along with Cuéllar who is still not ready likely back 10th sept  (Knee injury)

Agbonlahor has a Hamstring injury after suffering a kick in the hamstring against Blackburn

Heskey has a Groin Injury against Blackburn.
Alex McLeish was confident in his post-match comments that he had not suffered a major setback.

Young Knee injury a kick to his knee against Blackburn.
Alex McLeish stated in his post-match comments that the injury would be assessed but seemed confident that he had only suffered a minor injury.

Id be amazed if any of Petrov, Bent, Nzogbia, Gabby, Young, or Given play any part in this game.

I think he'll go something like;

Guzan

Lichaj
Clark
Dunne
Warnock

Bannan
Ireland
Makoun
Delph

Delfouneso
Heskey

Not the team I'd go with as I'd like to see Nzog and Gabby (if fit) in the side for confidence purposes but we do have a huge game on sat and AM will be mindful of that.

I think we'll win but it'll be closer than many think I reckon.  2-1.  Heskey with both.

They're bottom but one in the fourth division. If we can't use this as an opportunity to give a few players a chance to impress then we never will.

I like Herd. He's versatile.
I think he could do well on the right of a midfield three and I'd have no problems with seeing him play tonight.

I think he's more promising than Hogg (not that I'm writing him off) for instance and he seems to have put a bit of muscle on over the last year.

I think 3-1 Villa. Delfouneso (2) and Ireland.

I'd go with this...

-------------Marshall--------------
-Herd--Cuellar--Clark--Lichaj--
----Makoun---------Hogg---------
-N'Zogbia--Ireland--Bannan---
------------Delfouneso-----------

Subs - Guzan, Collins, Warnock, Petrov, Albrighton, Bent, Weimann.

Just the one remaining in side from Blackburn being N'Zogbia, with a side full of players who want to prove themselves. Think Hogg and Herd especially can do a solid job, with Bannan, Makoun & Ireland showing what they're made of. Nice mix of experience/inexperience on the bench added to that to see us through.

From the expresss and star

Alex Mac “It would be nice to do it two years in a row, but the big important place for us is the Premier League and trying to get as high up the table as we can.

Hereford, who drew 1-1 with Football League newboys AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, are 23rd in League Two and McLeish will make changes from the weekend’s 3-1 win over Blackburn.

Gabby Agbonlahor is a doubt after being replaced at half-time with a hamstring problem, while Emile Heskey and Luke Young were also withdrawn with abductor muscle and knee injuries respectively.

Brad Guzan could replace Shay Given, after thegoal keeper was troubled by a groin problem against Rovers.

Big game for Ireland, Bannan and Makoun. They have a real chance to stake a claim to a regular starting place.

Baker is suspended after his red for the reserves last night I think. Lichaz over Beye is good, as is Herd - is he playing centre back?

Ta, shame. Would have been nice to see him get 1/2 hour. I said in an earlier post that I expected Bent to start. Hopefully we'll get an early goal or two and by HT be in a position to give him the rest of the night off. I will be interested to see how Lichaj fares. He played very well for the US at the Gold Cup playing LB.

Newcastle said much the same in '72 not realising the potential of Radford and George.

All things considered it should be a walkover but this is Cup football and we cannot make bland assumptions.

Would have been the perfect opportunity tonight for him, shame really. Fairly attacking side tonight would have liked to have seen the Fonz start.

Irony of ironies i'm stuck in Tewkesbury on holiday.  Missus wouldn't stand for me trogging up to VP so i'm stuck listening to Shitkicker FM and trying desperately to find a decent stream. :-(
