Title: The £$%^ the Summer Olympics Thread
Post by: UK Redsox on July 27, 2011, 08:42:10 AM
The Opening Ceremony is one year today, so here's a thread for the miserable gits like me (well.... I suppose that it might be only me), who don't understand why such a random group of sports (and non-sports) get so much money and attention.

As some gobshyte said on the radio the other day, they are the London olympics...
As far as I am concerned they can shove the olympic flag where the sun don't shine.  I have no interest or desire to watch it, if you do fill ya boots.

I love sport, love the Olympics but hate lots of BBC presenters wasting valuable airtime standing around telling me how great it will be and how impressive the facilities are. There's no value in covering fuck all, wait 'till the blasted thing starts.

And I remember 1986, Dennis Howell and all that.

Fuck off London.

Get rid of any sport where winning the Olympics isn't the pinnacle of the sport, so tennis goes as does football, therefore I wouldn't add golf either.

I'm with you on sports that require judges to decide the winner, I'd scrap boxing, judo and wrestling on that rule as well.

New sports? Darts and snooker (because we'd win medals!), T20 cricket.

The only time I've been interested was the hockey in 1988 and when Redgrave was going for his fifth gold in 2000. I might watch the football this time around seeing as there has been so much talk about it. I've heard it's in London this time around and David Beckham will be the official mascot with cuddly toys and branded merchandise in his honour.

The 2012 Olympic Games could overshoot its £9.3bn budget unless "rigorous action" is taken to curb costs (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16036435)

Because that's the most important bit isn't it? The opening ceremonies.

Well, it kind of is in terms of TV audience and attracting more people to the country to spend money here.

Spend more money here? They will all go to London, they're hardly going to pop up to visit Cadbury's World and the Tamworth Snowdome are they? As usual, the rest of the country pays to line London's pockets.

Don't worry they'll just get rid of a load more public sector workers to pay for the Olympics and the war. So long as they don't pick on the lovely bankers that's what matters.

I'm off tomorrow for my Olympic Orientation. With no football to worry about I'm making a day of it and going to see what the Olympic park looks like.

I'm a bit worried after that Dispatches programme the other night - the officials were supposed to be staying in the Premier Inn next door but they appear to have pulled out of their agreement with LOCOG so it looks like we are fighting over who sleeps on the high jump bed.

Might have to stay at home and commute.

I will be covering for those that have been sent up to Dorset (on PSU duties). I doubt many from down here will be going to London other than those with particular skills i.e. search trained. It appears various forces will operate a shuffle system with those around the Met area going into the Met then the others backfilling if that makes sense.

bt - "if you log in to your account online there is a code that enables you to buy tickets for the opening or closing ceremony of the olympics."
Me - "don't mention the bloody olympics as all my summer leave has been cancelled due to the games."
bt - "They are only £55 each"
Me - "How much will I get for them on ebay?"

M5 North today at the Tewkesbury exit, the sign electronic said something like "Olympic Events. Make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey"

WTF ?  The Olympics are three months away and in any case, heading north on the M5 in Gloucestershire is just about as far away from any of the events as you can get.

A lot of the Matrixes have them all around the country. Three of the four Billboards next to the Bartons now has posters stating that some London roads will be closed during the Olympics.

I hope they don't want me to get involved in the arrival of the Olympic flame when it lands at a well known airbase on my patch. The traffic is going to be a nightmare and my crew mate has booked leave for the date it arrives so I will be on my own. I expect all the PCSO's will be roped in to deal with it. I plan on doing some foot patrol on Lizard point on that date.

the article - well a bit of it:

'Sonic weapon' deployed in London during Olympics

By Gavin Thomas
BBC News

Royal Marines will be operating in patrol craft on the Thames.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed a device which can be used as a "sonic weapon" will be deployed in London during the Olympics.

The American-made Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) can be used to send verbal warnings over a long distance or emit a beam of pain-inducing tones.

The equipment was spotted fixed to a landing craft on the Thames at Westminster this week.

An MoD spokesman said it would be used "primarily in the loud hailer mode".

My first thought was,  'That's a gig for Noddy Holder.'
My second, '...or Alan Carr.'

I know he is obnoxious at times, but this moved me a lot reading it. Maybe because I am really close to my little boy who is 4 and can't imagine what it would be like to say goodbye to him before time, but I really hope Daley can get a medal this summer for his old man. I got lucky in the ticket ballot and ended up with 4 tickets to 3 different events.  Eventually we as a family decided we would only go to 1 event and gave back the tickets for the other events via the official website, although the ballot system was a bit strange we did well out of it and ticket despatch and pack was very good.

We kept tickets for the men's 70 kg Judo at Excel.

Now we have the tickets in hand the full extent of what we actually bought is there to see.

Scamming bastards.

£45 each for a maximum of 2.5 hours in the afternoon.  Didn't say that when we actually bought the tickets, we were buying tickets for a day not an afternoon.

So Chambers won the trial but has not achieved the qualifying time yet. Personally I think the UK athletics are right not to select a former drugs cheat as a policy. I don't understand, in order to keep Chambers out, why they didn't change their rules to say places are available at selectors discretion then just pick the top 2 in the trials as usual except for 100m.

I've seen the highlights - Britain had more chances in that game than the Villa had before Christmas last year and it was nil-nil at half time!

They only scored when the NZ keeper set a wall up for a freekick and then stood behind it so she couldn't see anything.

Local news showing it was chaos at St James Park today. Massive queues of people attempting to collect tickets they had bought online months ago , there were 60 Mexicans who waited 3 hours and saw the last 20 minutes of the game. The ticket office opened nearly an hour late and when the match kicked off there were hundreds still queuing.

For some reason Hope Solo, the American goalie and captain looks quite shaggable on the pitch but is very dodgy looking when dressed normally.

But did you see the cover, it looks like she is just a mass of muscle and appears very masculine. She looks better with her hair tied back in a pony tail otherwise she like a smaller Chyna from the old WWF.

Why is there an oversized miniature golf course in the middle of the stadium?

I've just watched a bit of the women's football.

How can the standard of women's football still be so shite?!  Women have been playing football for decades now and the physical aspect of the game is becoming less of a factor so why the hell is it so bad?  I've played in Sunday teams better than what I've witnessed on telly.

It just makes no sense.

Women have been playing football for ages, but the funding for it worldwide is negligible, no one wants to spend the money on coaches etc for them so therefore the development takes a lot longer. I was talking to one of the Matildas a while back and she told me the funding is based on performance, so with them not qualifying for the Olympics this time round, a big chunk of valuable funding will not be given to a team that desperately needs every dollar possible. I am unsure of what it is like with the UK and USA, but I doubt it would be much better?

The long and short of it is despite being more athletic, the more the women develop, the men develop even further, the gap increases. Sadly the only way I can improve as a referee is to referee men's games as the speed difference is what I need to be able to outperform on the women's leagues.

Pay for performance, UK swimming as with other sports failed to deliver, get over it.  This is elite sport funding where it's about winning, not grass roots small boys jumpers for goal posts.
