Title: 70s revisited.
Post by: MAGNAN VILLAIN on June 23, 2011, 08:01:58 AM
Watch a re-run of the Villa - Norwich 1975 League Cup final yesterday, via dvd from the Villa shop, was suprised how many players of both sides kept slipping over during the game and how badly the pitch cut up.
Also had forgotten how good a player Brian Little was at the time, but then again most of the team looked pretty useful.
One thing I did notice, Jim Cumbes and Kevin Keenan (?) the goalkeepers, neither of them wore gloves unlike today when the 'keepers all appear to be wearing oven gloves.
Oh, the villa supporters were in fine voice too!

Kevin Keelan. He played a few games for us in the early '60's.

Got his hand to the pen, then Graydon scored off the post. Perhaps if he'd been wearing gloves, who knows?

Great memories of that game! The club released a vinyl LP of the commentary afterwards, I remember a few of us sitting down with a couple of Party sevens to listen to it

I have an LP commentary of the Villa -Spurs final, was it 1971?  Martin Chivers did the damage I seem to remember.

Yep, first time I went to Wembley with the Villa as a 13 year old. Despite beating an admittedly over the hill Utd over 2 legs in the semi, 3rd division Villa went to Wembley on a wave of emotion. In all honesty we could and should have won the game but what the hell, a Spuds fan friend admitted that although they had won the cup, we won the glory. The scenes at the Council house in Brum afterwards were very emotional too. Villa were on the way back

Little was great in that game.

He was, as was Frank Carrodus, John Robson, it fact, they all played well that day. What a team and what support we had. I recently watched the game on TV for the first time and was just amazed at how loud we were. It was such a brilliant day out, I had my claret and blue top hat my mother made for me, a Villa flag which I still have tucked away somewhere. The love affair with Saunders really took off that day, hearing the Villa fans singing his name and at the end chanting 'We want Saunders!' before he came over to us, big smile and a look of joy having previously lost two League Cup finals with Man City and Norwich.

The two other stand outs from that day, other than the goal and puking on the coach just as we arrived back in Brum was the Villa fans chanting 'Norwich' as their players left the pitch, pure class. The other, which I thought I'd imagined all these years but was confirmed on the DVD, was Ian Ross holding the cup on the shoulders of Jimmy Cumbes with his balls hanging out the side of his shorts.

Nearly had my Hobgoblin Gold all over my keyboard. I think Those incidents deserve a thread of their own.  Anyone remember I think Paul Rideout adjusting his foreskin before he shook some royal hands in 95 FA cup final?

Exactly as I remember it willy.
I was 16 and just old enough to get served in pubs - I was tall for my age! - but young enough to blub like a baby when we lost it in the last 10  minutes after playing like proper heroic underdogs.
Definitely a big part of our climb back to greatness!

I haven't dug it out for a while but I'm sure the vinyl LP of the European Cup final commentary has ads for the LP's of the two seventies league cup wins.

I bought the vinyl 12" of the commentary of the 1977 league cup final reply win v Everton.  It was crap, the entire first side of the recording and half of the second side consisted of only the first half of the game, so that the great moments were either not captured properly or not captured at all.  Such commentary as was on the recording was abysmal, sounding as if it couldn't possibly have been done live at the event.  I was so excited to have bought this recording at the time, and it literally went in the bin after one listening.

Player of the Decade has to have been  Brian Little, followed by Chico and Ray Graydon.

Best player to have worn the Claret and Blue in the 70's (not enough) Andy Gray

Top Manager no doubt Ron Saunders

Highlight of the 10 years - difficult one but I would plummet for promotion back to Division 1

Best following outside of a semi - take your pick from Blackpool, Sheff Wed or Coventry the Saturday after the league cup win

Definitely, I asked the bloke next to me if he'd brought his prayer mat.

My lad (14) said "this is a bit weird"

I told him it was magic !

I agree with all 4 of these. The best Villa normal league away days ever - probably.

My Dad took me to my first Villa Game early 70's probably 73/74 (born 68) all I remember is that Charlie Aitken was playing for the Villa, we were in the old Witton End and I think the other team were wearing white. It really annoys me that I don't know what my first Villa game was. Both my kids went down when they were three and have got the match ticket.I just asked my kids (now grown up ) expecting them not to know "Derby County" "Man City" the correct replies . I don't know whether to be proud or more annoyed that they know their first game and I don't.

another great "away" following was the 2nd replay of the league cup v Palace at Highfield Road, turned into a proper home game for us.

Best atmosphere at a home game Sunderland in 75 (closely followed by Birmingham first derby  back  in Div 1 and West Ham Boxing  day game)

A fantastic memory.
Taking over the ground and the sound of Villa fans stamping on the old wooden stand.
Walking to the ground after parking in the street with my Dad and Brother not seeing anything but Villa fans.
George Curtis's nose split by Tony Hateley in the fist few minutes, but big George wouldn't go off despite the 'repeated exhortations' of the ex-Villa striker.
Thinking we were about to rule football.

WW, that Palace game at Coventry was  remarkable in that the crowd  (circa 25k IIRC) was higher than Coventry's average for the season.

The Sunderland game was when the Holte was in its pomp - pre-barrier days. Electrifying.

For me also was the Albion home game in the 1975 promotion year.
3-1 to us roaring back from a goal down if I'm correct and for me the finest tackle ever seen at vp by Ian Ross to stop tony brown putting the Albion 0-2 up at the Holte end.
The roar from the Holte from that tackle was deafening and spurred us on to victory for me that atmosphere was up there with the Albion quater final of this year

Alex Cropley broke his leg  in a Div 1 game against the Albion in 79 if I remember correctly.  Remember it was freezing and there was a bit of rumpus on the train from Witton back to New Street when  Bowie was spotted.

We usually did well at home against the Albion and got a draw at their slum.

That Spurs League Cup final was also my first Villa match at Wembley. All these years later i can still picture the moment when Andy Lochhead should have given us the lead.He went up for the ball with the Spurs centre half Peter Collins and won the tussle and shot towards the Spurs net. It was on its way into the net when from nowhere or so it seemed Steve Perryman manged to clear. We may have lost to two late Martin Chivers goals but that is the day i felt they Villa were on the way back

As it's before my Villa supporting time, it's interesting to read what the press thought of Villa back then and to learn of the numbers of supporters down at Highbury (many more than QPR, it would seem).

One of my favourite nights as a Villa fan. We had 10,000 at Loftus Road for the goalless first leg (despite twice being postponed on the day of the game), I got locked out of the Holte for the second leg and we ran round to the Witton End and went in with the QPR fans. 2-2 and off to Highbury a week later for the replay where the must have been over 20,000 of us down there. Clock End was packed and the sides had loads of Villa in. Brilliant performance and atmosphere. It's where the chant "Wemberlee, Wemberlee, oh we're all pissed up and we're going to Wembley" started. What a season that was.

No one has mentioned the massive support at St Andrews  for the first away Blues v Villa  (we lost 3-2) filled the Tilton and the railway end.

The fall out with John Bond and Norwich - he stated that Norwich were potentially a bigger team than  Villa before the 75 cup final.  Cannery killer Aston Villa.

Chris Nicholl a man mountain.  And don't forget 110% Saunders.

The promotions.

Balloons I still think it began at Southampton in the cup.

Skinhead Neil don't think he ever  missed home or away.

Hole  in the Wall / Aston Tavern.

Easter Monday away at Leeds not  for the faint hearted (and Middlesborough)

Old Trafford 2nd replay.  Winning at Anfield the first  time they had lost for 2 years at  home.  It was Bonfire night and it was definitely bangers rather  than sparklers to and from the  ground.

The Holte End.

Not changing  our kit every year.

Special buses from Corporation Street.

We will get those feelings  back believe me.

I used to go the Hole In The Wall quite a lot. In relation to the Villa however, I have much fonder memories of the Tavern In The Town and The Cabin.

The Cabin was opposite the Bus Special departure point.  Rum and something or other, my mind has blotted it out, was the the preferred tipple for Townies.

A friend of mine used to drink that but she called it a red witch. When she threw up on it - which was quite often - it looked like she was vomiting blood.

Yes, it was rum and black, conman. Even the thought of it is ghastly now.

We won't go into a later student period where you could get pissed up in The Greyhound at Lea Bank on 4 pints of scrumpy cider for 50 pence.
