I've heard from a very reliable source from Murray Park (Rangers training ground), that Charlie Adam has been talking to Big Eck over the possibility of playing for Aston Villa.
-
WeeAldo, no disrespect mate, but I think we've seen our fair share of ITK information to last us a lifetime!! Your first post too!!
-
Why on earth would Charlie Adam want to sign for a half-arsed club which used to be famous? Gollum said it so it must be true
-

I know people may have reservations when reading this, but I can assure you the source (a good friend of mine), lets just say he knows Adam personally.
-

yeh, you might not want to use the terms "source" or "ITK" for a while on here. On fact, I wouldn't even use the word "reliable". That should be banned too, or should come with chinny emoticon.
-
This should be in the transfer thread. Also I think he's very overrated
-
I'm not that mad on him but would give him a chance. Would be the end of Wee Barry though... maybe send him there on loan to sweeten the deal? I think Adam could be very good but he has a tendency to try one Hollywood pass too many. I'm sure we'd stamp that out of him and have him tracking back and passing sideways in no time!
-
In defence of WeeAldo I can easily see it happen. Under McLeish Adam first broke through at Rangers and he is by accounts a big fan of Adam.
I'm not 100% sure of Adam. He is definitely overrated especially by the media up here. I prefer the Scottish playmaker we already have.
-
The fuss the Scotland fans were making over him in the friendly against Wales was embarassing. You'd think Lionel Messi had just announced his Caledonian ancestry and taken to the field wearing a Scotland shirt made of shortbread.

Personally, I agree, I think he is a tad overrated and Bannan seems like a vastly superior prospect. Should Bannan get a good run at Villa next season I believe he will displace Adam in the Scotland squad.
-
Good player, I hope it's true.
-
I really don't see Bannan and Adam getting in each others way at Villa. From what I have seen over the past season, Bannan is a tidy midfielder that will keep possession and keep playing one-twos and making space. Adam is a deep-lying playmaker (to coin a FM phrase) that will pick up the ball in midfield and ping it forward to a winger or striker.
In that sense I could vision a midfield looking something like this:
Bannan ------- Makoun/Delph
-----------Adam-------------------
Where Makoun and Bannan are neat and tidy on the ball, neither quite have the creativity to break through a solid defence. I imagine they will play in front of Adam, able to retain possession and shift the ball, whilst giving Adam plenty of time and space to do his hollywood passes when he gets the ball.
One criticism of Adam is that he gets caught on the ball fairly often, which against the Chuckle Brothers would be lethal but I think that Bannan has the spacial awareness to always be open for a pass if Adam is under a lot of pressure that he just doesn't get at Blackpool.
Add in some of his free-kicks and corners and I can see him as a successful buy. Would certainly appease me some way if McLeish signed him.
-
It's an obvious link because he was at Rangers when AM was boss. I think he was over hyped as the main man in the Blackpool 'romantic PL tale'. I'm sure Holloway would agree with me when I say he should go to a great club and manager like Liverpool and King Kenny rather than a tinpot, used to be famous outfit like us. And I'm sure he will stick to his principles even if we offer him more dough. Just like Hong Kong hairdresser of the year 1997 will if we offer more than anyone else for Foster or Johnson or Dann.
-

I think our Board have proved him right this week with their actions!
-
I'd really like us to sign Adam, he'd be very similar to Barry. He would strengthen our midfield. Good at passing, corners, freekicks and getting stuck in. He'd be our playmaker threading those balls into Bent.
-
Well maybe. I thought he was pretty much nailed on for Liverpool though?
-
Would be a good signing. As for the ITK, we've heard enough of that shit over the past 2 weeks to last a lifetime. Can we, from now on, make a note of all this shit and ban everyone who's ITK turns out to be a load of bollocks, (as most of it is)?
-
Adam would be great down the villa, he would be the replacement for barry that we have been waiting for, excellent player great passing and set piece ability! Let's hope its true.
-
He's currently 20/1 to sign for Villa with SkyBet (http://www.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/charlie-adam-specials/club-after-summer-transfer-window), so if you trust this latest ITK, fill yer boots.
I've gone off ITK's, for some reason.
-
From what I've see he's not overrated at all. Strong and skillful midfielder with a cracking shot on him. Was outstanding against Manu last season.
-
Well maybe. I thought he was pretty much nailed on for Liverpool though?
Having just signed Henderson for 20 mill, Gerrard, Lucas, Meirerles, Shelvey etc, I'm not sure they need him at 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'.

-
To be fair he was in a team that was relegated so in no way shape or form is he good enough for the mighty Villa.....
oops.....
post date my remarks to three days ago!!
-
I watched Adam closely after Jan, and he is a frustrating player, but I reckon would get at least 15 assists for Villa, and probably 7-8 goals. Great set pieces, and Bent would thrive on his through balls. It could happen, and would be a good signing IMO.
-
I like him but you have to ask what mcliesh would want with him.. i'm not sure he's much good at hoofing the ball forward at every opportunity.
-

He was effective for him at Rangers, and Gardner got 10 from midfield for Blues. The hoofing came about through having Zigic up there. I don't think it will happen here.
-
Apparently he once kicked the ball 80 yards i heard off an itk so villa bound he must be....

yeah he's bound to abandon all he knows and turn us into a slick passing side :0)

you wonder just by his set pieces and general creativity would he provide as many assists as Ash? Obviously completely different players, but it's not like Ash's freekicks or corners were really that productive. Adam might be limited in some ways, but he's deadly around the box.
And yes greg, McLeish only has one way of playing. In fact I heard he's going to sell all of our midfield players and wingers, sign 9 more 6ft plus defenders and we're just going to pump the ball into the box from our own penalty area to Bent all day. We get it, you don't like McLeish FFS.
-
No from me, it's time to give Delph and Bannan chances. Plus throw in that Clark and Downing could do a job in a three man midfield. I think we have enough lefties.
-

i have no feelings about him one way or the other, I don't care he's from the blose. I just don't like his football and you kidding yourself we're going to turn into Barcelona is tragic

yes, that's what I think. Like there's nothing between the way he played his football at Birmingham and Barcelona is there? It's absolutely nailed on that he'll always now play his football in the same manner. That he won't adapt based on the players he's now got. Are you sure he played that way in Scotland too?
-
he was honking for rangers
ask any rangers fan - see what blackpool paid for him
1 good season in the championship and 1/2 a season in the premierships and now he is a 10million pound player
dont touch with a barge pole
-
he could but if we'd appointed pullis or allardyce would you be claiming similar? because thats the level of football he specialises in so far.. what evidence have you that he will see the promised land, abandon his old ways, and launch into a new era? Would Pullis and Big Sam have been the turned away from the dark side once villa came calling. And if so why didn't we go with them?
-
I'm not sure Adam will go to Liverpool. They've already got Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Meireles, Spearing, Poulsen, Shelvey competing for central midfield places.
If you're Kenny Dalglish you'd be focused on wide players, worryingly for us. I'm not sure if they've got enough money for Downing, I don't see why we'd sell for much under £20m. We don't sell our best players cheap.
I'm ambivalent on Adam. Gets a bunch load of assists and goals, and I was very impressed with him against man u on the last day of the season. But I've also seen him lose the ball in poor positions a lot. He's slow and I think he may have to play in a 3 man midfield. I'm all for a 3 man midfield but I'm not sure Mcleish will go down the 4-3-3 route.

In all the flying skin and hair on these boards over recent days there was an excellent little thread entitled Impression Opinion Fact. It sought to examine the progression between what we see on the field of play to what we think of it to what we believe to be proven.
It was too good a thread to live and was buried under Titanic metaphors of fans being plunged into icy graves and I said bollocks you're a ****** offerings.
As I see it all the impressions McLeish made on the world of football in general and on Villa fans in particular is now becoming opinion and metamorphosing from maggot to chrysalis and will one day emerge as a beautiful free flowing passing game top four butterfly. (At this point I will refrain from commenting that the butterfly known as the Small Heath (true) is very much in danger of extinction).
This is where fact enters the process. The establish facts are that Alex McLeish is a poor manager compared with his peers and that all the evidence indicates that he will revert to type.
The fact of how good a manager he will prove to be hinges on whether he signs players like Charlie Adam and whether players like Charlie Adam can also metamorphose from relegation fodder into top four players. Time will tell but as a person who has gambled heavily all his life and from time to time advises professionally on betting, my money is on modest budget mid table mediocrity with occasional cup flourishes and regular flirtations with relegation. To me that is the message which has come over loud and clear from our board and our owner in recent days.
-
Stop! No real link's, just more friend or a friend ITK crap!
I don't believe any of them, however well meaning they may be as most have been proven to be attention seekers.
The only one I have any time for is MM, he passes on what he hears but always adds a caveat that its just that, hearsay.
10m that Blackpool are quoting is ridiculous, GH got the right price 3.5m. We may feel like mugs right now but that would be nothing compared to how we would feel if we were to even think of paying silly money for a slow over rated player like him.
-
He always looks at least a stone overweight to me. Not the most mobile or hard working player. You'd need a workhorse or two in midfield to accommodate him.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if we did sign Adam, and i'd be happy enough. He's not as good as the media seems to believe, but he is a player I think would fit into our team well. Worth a go I'd say, even if is a bit of what Richard Moore calls a 'highlights player'.
-
12 goals and 9 assists last season for Blackpool. Hardly relegation fodder stats. Young was 11 assists, 7 goals. Both took pens. He would replace a creative element we will be losing and give balance with his left foot. I can't see how in our position we can turn our noses up at the prospect of a player that got double the assists and quadrouple the goals of a player that Spurs want 40 million for in a similar position.
-
I think he'd be a brilliant signings.
-
Well Sir Alex said his corners alone were worth 10 million (or something) and our policy is getting people in on his recommendation...
therefore NAILED ON!
-
Thinking about it, and I don't really hold with all this 'who's the biggest club' bru-ha-ha, but if if if we could pull of the Adam signing, it would probably represent a bit of a coup and maybe restore a bit of 'status' to the club. After all, he is a sought after player, so to bring him in would represent a bit of a restoring of order.
-
For the last time, it's not a FACT that mcleish may or may not be a poor manager. It's an OPINION. Even if it might be the right opinion.
-
The establish facts are that Alex McLeish is a poor manager compared with his peers and that all the evidence indicates that he will revert to type.
Sorry, Brian, but that's a right load of old bollocks. It's opinion, pure and simple. It might be a valid one but there is enough evidence from his CV to argue that he's a decent manager. Of course the relegations are a blot on his copybook just as they are on Harry Redknapp's but would anyone use them to claim as established fact that he is a poor manager? Or would they say winning a cup against the odds with an unfashionable is more a reflection of his abilities? To me I think it's all part of the learning curve.
He's not the man I wanted but there is enough in his past to suggest that he MIGHT actually know what he's doing. What happens over the next three years will almost certainly seal his reputation one way or another.
-
I like him but you have to ask what mcliesh would want with him.. i'm not sure he's much good at hoofing the ball forward at every opportunity.
He tried to sign him for Small Heath.
-
Adam is at the top of the range of players who would come to Villa now, beggars can't be choosers forget about top players, Adam would be an okay signing. Bannan will not make it.
-

Agree with you about Adam, Robbo, but I think Bannan will be a decent player. I watched them play for Scotland last season (only 1 game mind) and Bannan was superb whereas Adam had a 'mare. Bannan also had a stormer for us against Manure at VP last season so I think there's a good player in there
-
Adam has a fantastic passing range but I can't help feeling he could be a one season wonder.
-
I think he'd be great for us. Captain, can afford his luxury in a three man midfield, he's exactly what Bent needs behind him and we'd get a quality set piece taker.
However, I would worry about Fabian and Barry. How many left footed centre mids do we need?
-
It's about time we had a decent corner taker again and he is a terrific passer. Providing the price was reasonable, he'd be worth having.
-
Seriously what kind of player do some of you think we can / will sign? ???
Adam is a very good playmaker and fits our demographic perfectly - it may come as a shock, but Luca Modric is a touch out of our reach.
-
Can't help thinking it could all go a bit Sidwell for Adam but regardless I'd imagine he'll end up at Liverpool.
-
Adam would finally be our replacement for Barry, but with a twist.
Adam would instead actually offer the creative spark and could be the fulcrum of our midfield’s attacking intent, in the way that Barry just quite wasn’t up to the same task.
I reckon we could double his wages and still have him earning 50% less than Ireland. I think the downside would be his lack of mobility, but then that didn’t really stop Barry from being a top player for us. He’s not one that I could see working in a 4-4-2, for the exact same reasons as why I never thought we’d got it sorted with Barry being in there.
Nonetheless, he’d get big thumbs up from me. McLiesh could then look to replace Jimmy. A thankless task.
-
sory.... laptop gone mad cleared off
-
class player but i think liverpool or man u will get him.
-
why not give barry bannan to fill the position that charlie adam would have
-
I have only seen Adam a few times, but the times i have seen him he has a top quality pass/cross on him.
Only 26, and will not rely on his pace, imho would be a good signing, for me has better quality final ball than AYoung or Downing.
-
I hope we sign him, but he'll go to Liverpool.
-
Probably going to Liverpool as they are signing up all the known British talent but would be a good signing for us.
-
Last I heard, Liverpool want him and have placed bids but Blackpool are insisting on about £10m for a championship player with 1yr left on his contract. From what I understand, Holloway and the chairman receive a percentage of any transfer fee so they are holding out for the highest bid.
Liverpool have already spent approx £80m in the last 2 transfer windows so surely their spending must end soon. If Blackpool hold out and we manage to keep hold of Downing, then I can see Liverpool switching to alternative targets...saying that, they could easily get the Adam deal signed and sealed within the next few days if they meet Blackpools valuation.
-
I think Adam is a significant improvement on what we have. He is a top premier league player, he can offer many assists and goals. The only problem I see, is that Bannan might not get a clear chance, because they are very similar players and Adam is still 25. Or maybe Bannan can thrive as a backup of Adam. I would take Adam for 10m. But more important is to get a GK, RB and a third Winger
-
The next Sidwell. In my opinion.
-

Get the deal done as quick as possible please Randy.
-

Didn't someone already mention he is a Barry replacement?
-
I can't believe he's only 25. Looks about 35.
-
25?! Bloody hell he's had a hard paper round! Get him signed, (hard paper round or not) think he'd do a grand job for us.
-
Didn't realise he played under McLeish before.
-
Great at the dead ball stuff, but we've got one of the best young prospects IMO in Fab Delph. I'd pick him every time and nurture Bannan. No good having a brilliant Academy/Youth set up if we don't use it!
-
I wish Charlie Adam success during the interview process ;-)
-
If its true, I didnt expect us to move so quickly which clearly sends out a message of intent or a way to appease the fans. If hes worked with AM before then lets hope thats a good thing and a deciding factor. Even the most anti-AM fans must see this as a good thing if it comes off. Hope we manage to land Adam, quickly followed by bids for Foster and N'Zogbia (after all...we are in Dave Wheelans good books!).

Did you see Whelan's comments re us today?
Reckons Martinez is too good to manage a club like Villa and he'll be at one of the really top clubs in the future!
Knob! Has he been talking to Gollum?
-
I like how McLeish is quick with transfers. MON used to piss about last minute.
-
Adam-Foster-Dann-izaguirre would make everything look very different .......
-
My Blackpool-supporting friend reckons that the January speculation, coupled with the usual case of a promoted team eventually being worked out, meant that Adam had a poor few months. He does though reckon he'd be a good acquisition for most mid-table to Europa League team - e.g. Villa.
-
Is it not the case that Eck broke off his holiday to join Villa and so he is probably back on holiday now so we won't be signing anyone for a few days at least?
-

I wouldn't bet on that

What was that in? I heard him speak really highly of us and said what a big club we are, although I also heard him say that he reckoned Martinez would be manager of Real or Barca etc

Pure speculation on my part, but I'd imagine having been given this opportunity, whilst he might want to continue his holiday, career considerations will be more important.
-
He could always send an E-Mail.

My firm's got a Blackpool office, and the manager there is a big Blackpool fan and would agree with you. I think Adam's a decent player and as you say, for somebody like Stoke or Bolton, would probably do a very good job indeed. I just don't seem him at somewhere bigger like Liverpool or Spurs somehow.
-
I'd like to see him play for us. Him and Jean II Makoun could be good midfield duo.

Isn't he 'being revealed' om Monday? I assumed that means a press conference so he may already have given up his holiday to get on with the job, including transfers.

I agree. I just can't see Liverpool being interested in him. Not so much because they paid 20 mill for Henderson, more because he is too liberal and free spirited for their style of play. I think they are likely to go for foreign players. I also read that they have a centre back lined up and have given their Greek fella another years contract, doesn't sound like they want Dann to me.
-
I've never seen Adam play in the flesh, but from what I've seen of him on Sky and MOTD, I think his ability in and around the box and his dead ball skills would be a plus. But as a few others have said his lack of pace could be a worry. Nine or ten million quid is a lot to pay for someone who would be a bit of a gamble, get the price down to six or seven, maybe. Then there's Bannan, why spend all the time, effort and money on him at the academy and then he leaves because he can't see himself getting a chance at the Villa? I could see that happening and he moves to a club and comes back to haunt us in the near future.
Much better to concentrate on a GK and our defensive frailties.
-
I like how McLeish is quick with transfers. MON used to piss about last minute.
It is only press speculation thus far.
I like Adam, but 9 million? Really?
-
Redknapp was on talkshit on the Jan transfer deadline day saying that they had agreed a 5mil fee to Adam but they couldn't fax the deal through to the premier league in time. His value should have gone down given his poorer second half of the season and Blackpool's relegation.
I think he would make a good captain, we had lacked a leader since Fat Baz buggered off.

I am sure they were looking at part ownership or something though.

I pretty sure Adam is a legitimate target for Liverpool and would have been done already if not for Karl Oyston stalling.
Not sure about Dann. He's been linked a lot but could just be because he's half-decent, available and scouse.
-

When we have the ball, yes they would be a good midfield partnership. But when we wouldn't have the ball then more then likely it will be goal to the opposition.
