Imagine if you had to choose an ex Villa player to be the next manager. Leeds have spent most of the last thirty years playing this game for real. Would you have Brian Little back? From the list of current league managers it would have to be Simon Grayson. Deano for his work in getting skint Wrexham into the play-off? Peter Withe has bossed Asian countries. Andy Gray? David Platt? Sid? Kenny Swain has done well with England youngsters. Curbishley? Staunton? Southgate? Ian Taylor? Dennis Mortimer?

Ian Taylor all day long.
About time a real brummie had a chance at the job.
-
All of those are pretty inexperienced at this level, so any of them should only come in with a DOF type figure at the club.
Deano is the one that stands out to me, but that's probably as he was a favourite of mine as a player. He also came out with the line "Villa are just as big a club as Liverpool - they just don't realise it."
-
We don't do ex-players becoming managers very well. Ironically, the only time was when we were at our lowest ebb and the likes of Graydon, Nicholl, Little and Rioch went on to have decent careers.
-
Of the current crop of ex-Villa players, my vote would go to Simon Grayson.
I think the most sucessful former Villa player as a manager has been George Graham.
-
In some ways I'm still in mourning about Brian going. In a parallel universe he rode out his first bad full season, stayed in charge and built an empire of which we're still reaping the rewards. Could've been. Stanley Victor has a lot to answer for
-
ready for some abuse......
Alan Curbishley lol
-
How about Grayson assisted by Alan Thompson and Gary Parker
-
Wow; and people are scoffing at the idea that Martinez - who is too inexperienced - is not a credible option!
The only current ex-player who is in a coaching / managerial role who comes close is probably Grrayson, and he is not only unproven, he's also a rabid Leeds fan; unlikely to move from the Elland Rd job of his own volition in the near-term.
-
I hated it when Brian Little was manager. I spent his entire tenure thinking it was going to end badly, and I was delighted when he got out more or less intact.
I wouldn't wish the Villa manager's job on any player I like or admire. Hodge or Hopkins then.

Never work as a three man midield without a natural holding player in there.
-
I can't help but wonder who of the last 10 years might one day take the leap and pull it off. I'd love to see someone like Mellberg/Laursen lead us out at Wembley.
-
I reckon my two will become true at some point
I wouldn't mind betting, within 10-15 years one of either Laursen or Mellberg will be Villa manager
And I cant wait !!
-
Stephen Hodge. With Tony Cantscorino as assistant.
Would be worth getting a season ticket a few rows behind the Trinity Road dug-out just for that.
-
Brian little, Alan Evans, Paul McGrath and Sid. Yep, that would do nicely.

Gareth Southgate is currently working with the FA as the head of elite development. From what I understand this involves sorting out youth football. Confirmed by this interview:

Whilst I would not want him as a manger or coach he strikes me as a very intelligent guy who could help Villa in some capacity as a kind of diplomat and strategic thinker.
Indeed reading that interview southgate says:
"You have to look at what drives you as a person and I like longer-term planning.”
-
Salifou. Definitely crap footballer, good manager Maybe.

Could be McClaren with Southgate as first team coach?!
