Title: Superstars who almost become a Villa Player
Post by: Salsa Party Animal on May 28, 2011, 11:24:47 PM
Gary Lineker - Was rumoured to be moving to Villa Park before Tottenham bought him from Barcelona

Christain Vieri - John Gregory could have bought him but we didn't for some reason. He would be ideal number 9 :(

Juninho - What a player - not sure why it didn't happens.

Any more.

Gazza every close season for a while, usually when Doug saw season ticket sales were lagging a little.

BRF almost bought Oliver Bierhoff didn't he? He didn't rate the lad apparently.

I think it may have been because Doug wouldn't pay some contract pay off on Middlesbrough's behalf.

Rowley Regis' very own Iniesta, Carlton "18 caps" Palmer.

Robbie Keane.

Think he would have become a superstar if he joined the Villa and stayed for a number of season's.

Instead he went to Coventry and never really settled at a club long enough.

I'm not sure about this one. On the one hand, it was the last time Doug was believed when he said we were in for a player, but then again Juninho hardly did anything after that, so maybe we got away with it.

I remember reading in Deadly Doug that we nearly signed Juninho and Roberto Carlos in a joint deal after the Umbro Tournament in 1995.

Les Ferdinand is another that springs to mind too.

There was the link to Alan Shearer in the Autumn of 1998 (I think) - when Gregory had taken us to the top of the league.

Radamel Falcao is about to join Spurrrrz for £stupid millions - we've been linked to him for every summer since time immemorial.

Big Fat Benni McCarthy was going to be the best centre forward we ever had according to John Gregory - never happened.

I remember Les Ferdinand had a choice of us or Newcastle in the Summer of 95 and opted for the latter. If we would have had him up front instead of Savo in 95/96, who knows what we could have achieved. The bloke was a goal machine.

Roberto Carlos, if Ellis is to be believed. He could have had him but Brian Little preferred Alan Wright!

I think Brian Little's version of the Roberto Carlos story was that Doug seemed to think he'd unearthed a hidden nugget and Brian had to point out he'd been playing for Brazil for three years and was on his way to Inter for a huge fee!

I remember one morning it was on Breakfast TV (can't remember if BBC or ITV) that we had agreed to sign Bergkamp. He signed for Arsenal instead.

I remember that PWS I think it was the former Villa captain Bruce Rioch who signed him.

Frank Lampard from West Ham

True, apparently he was good friends with Darius Vassell and thought about it for a while.

Jurgen Klinsman was rumoured (before finally settling for John Fashanu)

near misses were:

Peter Davenport
Kevin Drinkell

Wasn't BFR supposed to have said he wanted to sign Klinsmann and Roy Keane but "had to cut his cloth to suit the chairmans pocket?"

He also said Klinsmann had said he didn't want to come to England, then joined Spurs, and he preferred Andy Townsend to Keane.

I remember Kirsty Gallagher announcing about 12/13 years back that we'd had a bid accepted for Pedrag Mijatovic. Read in the Holy Trinity a few years after that "somebody" at Villa Park had pulled the plug on the deal. Wasn't Gregory interested in Hakan Sukur for a while? I remember a tenuous link once to Carlos Roa, the keeper who saved David Batty's penalty.Which would have been great cos he was crazy mental! Once retired cos he thought the world was going to end when the millenium arrived

Dennis Bergkamp is one of those names, apparently he just hated the idea of living in Birmingham. Another dutch master we missed out on was Van Nistelrooy, who was apparently nearly persuaded along by Luc Nilis, one of his close mates.

Not sure about the legitimacy of these, but they're ones I've often heard about.

Teddy Sherringham was linked too wasn't he?  But we ended up with Cascarino.

I was convinced we were going to get him, or, more to the point, I'd convinced myself.

That was some Doug-onomics, the Millwall chairman offered us the cheaper Cascarino instead of the better player Sheringham and the rest is history!

For us it pretty much did.  Give or take five months.

Didn't Gregory try to sign Gazza at some point? Think I'm right.
