Title: 26th May
Post by: Chris Jameson on May 26, 2011, 03:19:07 PM
Just realised the date.

29 years, still at least it was a proper champions trophy and we could claim to be the champions of Europe having won our league the previous season and beaten the champions of other leagues in order to win it.

Modern football is rubbish.

And Small Heath are celebrating twenty years since the Leyland DAF trophy, just shows the gulf in class.

I'm trying to remember what I was doing at this time (mid afternoon) that day. I was the only youngster (11) in a crowd of grown-ups and I think I was sat outside a bar in Rotterdam reading a football magazine while they were on the lash. I think there was a kickaround going on in view as well and it was very, very hot. I'm pretty clear on the events from approx half seven to half nine though.

I was at school wondering why the place next to me was empty.

It turned out that the kids dad had taken him to Rotterdam to see the Villa win the European Cup.

Jammy bastard.

I was 18 and would have gone, but had an A level exam that day.

With hindsight, I should have skipped the exam and gone to Rotterdam. A levels can be taken every year.......

"Withe Evans help were Shaw to score"

I was in exactly the same boat Pete I was 19 and looking to take my final exams after 3 years of stuying at technical college, still wish I had gone too.
watched it in our local pub here in Cambridge and everyone rooting for Bayern until that shinner from Withe.....
not the same as being there !!!

I didn't find out till he woke me up on the Monday morning and told me I wasn't going to school, I was going to Rotterdam. Good job I was sufficiently accademically ahead of you to miss a week. I thought I'd made up to you with the Queen ticket a couple of years later (shit, shouldn't have mentioned Queen on here). By the way, cheers, I'm currently working my way through the lager you left in my fridge after the barbeque Sat!

Happily, I was there. Went to the FA Cup Final replay the following day, QPR v Spurs. When we got to Loftus Road to collect tickets we went into the pub next door and it almost went silent when they spotted my Villa shirt but got drinks bought for us and looked after by some 'pwoper geezers' who we happily managed to lose once they'd escorted us to Wembley.

I was there, and I remember every minute, every pint and every emotion.

I've told the kids that when I hit old age I want them to have me shot the day I can't remember Rotterdam. No point living on once that memory goes.

One of my abiding memories is of an incredibly pissed bloke singing 'Put another log on the fire...' over and over again on the return journey on the ferry.

I was only a year old but my grandad was there. first thing I thought if this morning was him and Rotterdam. I'm in Berlin at the moment and have spent all day under a stifling sun in my champions of Europe top. best I can do, and it still feels great!

It was a guy steaming into a pub shouting we've won. 'Beer at home means Davenports'  :D

Bastards! I was only 5 but remember my family getting smashed watching it and being bewildered at their reaction when we scored. My biggest regret about the Villa is that having been home and away all my life I missed the boat on our finest hour.

Sorry to be negative, I love it when my mates dad tells us about it. No matter what happens we were once Champions of Europe!!

By my reckoning it was a 7.30 ko, 10 mins half time and Withey scored in the 67th min. Should we all sound our horns then raise a glass at 8.47 and again at 9.10? (skip the raising a glass if you are actually driving)

I went to Rotterdam with the official travellers club. It was a fantastic three days and I'll never forget it - gorgeous weather, a Roy of the Rovers performance from Nigel Spink, a beautifully constructed goal to win it,  the moment of elation when the final whistle went, the hotel where we were staying running out of beer when the coaches returned to Amsterdam, and the joyous coach and ferry ride back to Blighty.
My only regret was missing the civic reception in Birmingham. I think we were still travelling back.

yeah and if it was still one team  , probably players like Downing would not be wanting to fook off to play CL , they wouldnt have a chance..   2nd , 3rd and 4th is a joke..

I was there as a 15 year old with my dad and grandad  and thought there were going to be plenty more of them...

Went with the Travellers Club, as that was the only way to get a ticket after the trouble at the semi-final away leg. After the match we went back to the coach, announced to the steward that we would not be returning with them, and went celebrating until the early hours at the bars in Rotterdam. I along with five mates and about fifty others, slept on the grass outside Rotterdam station (luckily it was a warm night); I was draped in my 'Aston Villa' Union Jack and we were overlooked by police the whole night. We then caught the first train to Amsterdam the next morning and continued our celebrations there until the Saturday, when we came back to England via the Hook / Harwich.

Those were the days!

I watched on the tele whilst our 2 very young children were in bed. When the Villa scored I went crazy, dancing around the room. I was so nervous I stood outside watching the rest of the match through the window. When they scored my heart sank I turned away. When I returned to the window the game seemed to have kicked off again. However at the final whistle, I couldn't understand why the Villa fans were going crazy. I ran inside to realize their goal had been disallowed and we had won the cup. I fell to my knees in front of the TV, remembering those dark days in the 60's including the shame of the 3rd Division. My son was born later that year and yes, both of us are season ticket holders.

And yes, I still believe we can do it again!   :)

Great story, I was 7 and my oldest sister 14 so my Dad has to stay home and look after us otherwise I am sure he would have gone. I remember the goal and not much else but my sisters took all our Villa scarves to school next day except for an Andy Gray one. Anyway Wonderful memories and it'd be great to be back there one day. Happy Rotterdam Day folks!

I was 7 and watched the game sitting on my dads knee in front of the tele.I really wished he would of gone now so he could of come back and told me all about it but our kid had just been born so money was tight i guess.I remember him throwing me up in the air when we scored and my mum going mad at him for waking my baby brother up.

Anyway,my little boy is 7 today and he was born to the exact minute 22 years on that Withe scored the goal.
Happy birthday son and thank you dad for giving me the gift of following the greatest football club in the world.

We are the champions, champions of Europe

Uncanny.  Have to confess I hadnt realised the anniversary til coming on here tonight.  The weird bit is that today at work I went in my 1982 European Champions tracky top to wind up the resident (southern gloryseeking) Liverpool fans - first time I'd worn it this year.

Remember it like it was yesterday - 12 years old and running out the door and round the estate at FT screaming, to the bemusent of the Yam Yam majority in our part of Halesowen  ;D

The night before the game in Brum was electric as thousands enjoyed a few drinks before joining the queues for the special trains from New Street down to the awaiting ferries at Dover. I think our train went at about midnight, so it was a noisy flag-waving hour after kicking out time as the crowds waited outside the station. No channel tunnel back then unfortunately.

I was 17. Went with my mate by ferry and coach. Fantastic memories of a 2 (or 3, it's all a bit hazy) day bender. Got home a day later at 2am. Watched the game again twice on the betamax video that my old man taped for me and went straight to work....

Things that stuck with me:
Playing footy against the Bayern Fans on a pitch down the road from the stadium.
Wondering where the fuck Rimmer was going after 9 minutes and who the hell was Nigel Spink?
Being right behind the Withe goal.
Enduring the longest period of time ever after we scored.
Seeing the Cup being lifted.
Shedding a tear.

I went with my next door neighbour who was told to look after me as I was only 17 and as daft as a brush, well he fucked off to the pub as soon as we got to Rotterdam and I never saw him again until I somehow got home. Luckily I stumbled acrossa couple of other lads I knew from school and they looked old enough to secure alcohol (I looked about 13!) and we proceeded to get wasted.
Getting home was fun seeing as my neighbour had the travel details and I hadn't got a clue which ferry I was on or anything, and anyway we decided to join the huge amount of Vila fans who were making a night of it, I bluffed (or stowed) myself away on a ferry and then a couple of trains to brum (no money left by then) but I think they had decided it was wise not to bother the still celebrating hordes with trivial things like ticket checks!

You sound just like my 22 and 19 year old lads (latter is also at NTU!); seriously, I hope your time will come - I did have to endure the 1966 - 1975 period of decline and then renaissance.

I was homeless at the time living in a friend's back room and watched the match on a b/w portable.
When we scored I went mental and broke the rather flimsy single bed - it was the only piece of furniture I owned at the time but I didn't give a toss.
After the match went to the waterloo in Wollaston and drank my entire week's dole

I still get teary eyed when Withe shins it in...

I got married on Saturday June 5 1982 and this fact alone is responsible for me not being able to go to Rotterdam. (money/time etc) What I didn't realise at the time was that it wasn't  just one day in my life that I was going to suffer as a result of getting married!!
Anyway watched it on telly. Somehow didn't feel nervous either  before or during the match. After all it was fun for us getting that far when you consider Sir Ron Saunders  had left the club. But I guess it was his team and the team had inbuilt winning mentality.

I am going to play the video highlights of that and previous season for youngsters in my family to watch before the game starts tonight.

I remember the 3 days so well and the game far, far better than the 57 Cup Final.
Sadly of the 8 of us who went together only 4 are still alive but each and every one of us had a lifetime of memories to keep us smiling through. We had all been part of the return from Div 3 to that day in Rotterdam. Each home and away match, each high, each low all led to that through ball, that cross and Withe's shin. It was fate and payback.
Wonderful

went to school as usual that day  - couldn't concentrate at all from the excitement of it - i was 8 then. Ran home as quick as I could after it and remember being really nervous in the build-up. I watched with my mum and dad (both man u fans) on our old black and white telly. Remember being gutted when Rimmer went off injured and as the wave of attacks kept coming I thought we'd got no chance. I went mental when we scored jumping round the lounge room. The last 20 mins were excruciating. Seem to remember a karl heinz ruminegge overhead kick that i thought would go in. Top night, obviously was knackered the next day from getting no sleep.

Honestly can't see us winning it again in my lifetime - even qualifying for it is unlikely for the forseeable future, despite the 4 places being available. Although as my mate always says: Ya gotta believe Rob, ya gotta believe!!
