Oi! You're supposed to be the ludicrously optimistic one.

I suppose I'll have to go with the ridiculous guess.

Arsenal 0 Villa 2.

The bastards have finally ground me down, especially with McLacklustre overseeing things. I don't think we've had a 2-0 win all season (I think I've predicted that result once or twice) so I hope they prove me wrong.

Why don't they ever play like they did against Stoke when they play us?  You just know they'll turn into Barcelona on Sunday.  Problem is now they need to win to keep 3rd spot.
Having said that, some of their players looked totally uninterested on Sunday so I'll go 1-1 to us!

Arsenal have annoyed me this season.  They have bottled it as usual when it comes to the crunch...    Losing THAT cup final was unforgiveable!  They have dropped silly points against teams around us too!

Saying that, they could still finish second.  I doubt our team will relax (now seemingly safe) and play calm, attractive football.  More likely they will relax in the same manner of recent games and not put much effort in!

Our record at the Emirates in the league must be one of the best though but I think this will be a predictable 2 or 3 goal defeat.

Can only see an Arsenal win here they need to secure third so they can avoid the qualifying rounds in the CL.Praying it will be a small margin a 1-0 or 2-1.Suspect it might be about 4-0 though.

I really think we will get a pasting.
Our lot really can't be bothered t play for the caretaker manager. We have been unable to raise our game against the likes of Wigan, Stoke etc.
There is no chance of doing it at the Emirates when its Arse's last home game of the season and they will want to sign off in style.

Arse 5 - Villa 0

4-1 to the Arse.

Can't see Dunne and Collins being remotely mobile enough ( particularly the former) against them.

We showed against Wigan how poor we are, it isn't going to change til next season.

But as the seats at the Emirates are far closer to the pitch than mine in the Upper Holte its the perfect, and hopefully last, chance to give those twats who have been such a spineless, inept bunch of tnucs a piece of my mind.

The season can't end quick enough. Roll on next season, new management (Steve McClaren is the whisper I have heard), a massive clear out of all the crap and new players who look like they give a toss.

The referee for the game is Michael Oliver (Northumberland)

He has overseen 2 games of ours this season - both away, both poor defeats (at Blackburn and Man City for those who are interested)

His only Arsenal game saw them defeated at home by West Brom.

The assistants will be Bob Pollock (yellow flag) and Ron Ganfield (chequered). Andy D'Urso is 4th official.

Just found a bet on Ladbrokes.  Arsenal to win the game with at least 3 goals being scored (ie, 3-0, 4-0, 2-1, 3-1 etc...) pays evens.  Had a fifty on it, thought it was too good to turn down.  Had two winners already today with 4 or more goals in the Blackpool game paying me 15/8 and Man City to win paying 9/10.  Result!

EDIT;  Considering most of us are expecting a hammering tomorrow that bet looks pretty nailed on.

Think Arsenal have won 2 of their last 9 league games. At least we are playing them at a decent time. Low on confidence, not as low as ours mind. Am hoping he doesn't risk Fabregas and Nasri...

Last time we played them at the Emirates we were in good form and Fabregas kicked our arses. Even without him I think the same is likely to happen tomorrow.

The mail suggest Mcallister is thinking of playing a somewhat experimental side.

I'm hoping he'll shelve this plan after today's results. It's just not worth taking the chance.

I would support a change of formation though, to 4-3-3. I'd play cuellar at right back, makoun alongside stan and NRC and the England trio up front.

I think Makoun might just have his best game for us tomorrow anyway. He looked some player against Man Yoo in January and Arsenal's style of play is less physical than what he's come up against since those early stages of his Villa career.

Surely, the Mail must be wrong? Experimental sides this season: Man C in the Cup & Spurs on Boxing Day. Plus, McAllister has struggled to manage the first choices since Ged hit A&E.

Considering how bad the first picks are I struggle to see how an experimental side could be any worse.

Also, considering the fact that most people on this thread reckon we will be cuffed what difference does it make?

We haven't lost a league game by more than one goal since manure away at the start of feb, not sure of previous occasion. Two more of those and we stay up for sure. Hooray! An experimental side could get mullered like at citeh. No rhanks

That wasn't an experimental side at Man City - it was a "surrender, we can't compete" shambles of a side. For that alone, Houllier should not be here next season.
A bloody disgrace.

This is getting really tough to call, with Arsenal's recent form. The fact that it's their last Home game of the season just makes me think they'll turn up.

I think it'll either be a 5-1 drubbing, or a scrappy 1-1 draw.

The worrying thing is, according to yesterday's B'ham Mail Gary Mac is considering an 'experimental' side for this game! He may give the fringe players a chance.... he really thinks we're completely safe and can relax! It only takes both Blues and Wigan to win and us to lose heavily at The Emirates...do you feel relaxed??

“The formation may change a little bit,” said the caretaker boss. “There may be room to try a few things.

“I might be looking to do things a little bit differently with different players.”

No Gary, this is not the time to fuck around.

This is what has to happen in order for us to go down -

Wigan beat West Ham (Let's say by 3 goals).
AND
We lose to Arsenal (again we'll say 4 goals).
AND
Birmingham beat Fulham or Tottenham
AND
We lose to Liverpool (again we'll say 4 goals)
AND
Blackburn or Wolves has to finish in a win for one of the teams
AND
Wigan have to win at Stoke (Let's say by 2 goals)
AND
Blackpool have to win at Man Utd (If we lose our 2 games with -7 they would need to win by at least a 3 goal margin).

If people still think that we are going to go down, with all of the above happening, then I suggest they take themselves to the bookmakers and put a pound on it all, because they will become very rich.

I feel relaxed and think we are safe.

Is an "experimental" team that bad? Why not bring in the players that want to play and maybe we'll see some fight out of them.

So lets drop Petrov, dunne, Heskey, Ash?! and play Makoun, Cuellar, Gabby and Albrighton from the start.

Ash wants to fuck off so he can do it now as far as I'm concerned.

Delph on the bench as well to replace NRC mid point of second half and make downing the captain.

2-1 Villa!

I would hope that was hoping that we would be mathematically safe today. I think it would be much the same team. Gabby for Heskey and Makoun for Petrov maybe?

Here's to dreaming of a win, hoping for a draw, settling for a one goal loss.

Thats great and I think , as you say, it would be a very strange scenario indeed to happen - but the fact is - it COULD happen.

There have been plenty of occasions in the past where the seemingly impossible has happened - Albion getting out of it that time being one, the "Dodgy goal" by Wimbledon being another. Look at the year Tevez kept West Ham up by beating Wimbledon - only to send Sheff Utd down - who everyone throught were not even in danger because a set of circumstances similar to what you have just said had to occur - and they did !!!

All I am saying, until it is 100% certain, we should be busting a gut, taking this game as if our life depended on it - not playing an experimental side.

Can you imagine if we played an experimental side and all this weeks scenarios you have just said happened ? - do you want to be going into next weekend looking over your shoulder ?

Title: Re: Arsenal v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread

Wigan 3-0 West Ham - 24/1
Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa - 16/1
Birmingham win v Fulham - 5/4
Aston Villa 0-4 Liverpool - 40/1
Wolves win v Blackburn - 11/10
Wigan win at Stoke - 12/5
Man Utd 0-3 Blackpool - 125/1

Put £1 on that lot to happen and you'd win £35,271,510.75 according to a bet calculator I've just used.
