Title: Next seasons kit.
Post by: PaulTheVillan on May 02, 2011, 04:46:36 PM
This in Claret & Blue will do nicely please Nike. (Obviously not with the Arsenal badge on it!)

We either keep is classic or go for something totally different. Can't stand this seasons home kit.

I don't buy replica kits (too old, too fat, too tastefully attired), but if we're going to have them, they should be of the highest possible quality.

This year's looked really cheap and nasty in every way. It's probably for the best that it wasn't in the stores until almost Christmas anyway.

Reading these comments I understand to be in a minority, but I love this season kit. Generally speaking, I love the kits of the past where as don't like Nike and the modern kits (I find particularly awful the last two kits), but I consider the  current one nice, distinctive and with the correct shade of dark claret.

Not like Arsenal to incorporate some needless decorative embroidery on an expensive product of questionable durability.

take away the checks and that IS our kit we've got this season. Wouldn't mind going back to a proper collar (sky blue) or even better a 1992-93/Victorian style kit with blue hooped collar. No stripes, halves, quarters or sleeveless full bodied tops please.

Agreed that the checks look naff.

The kind of thing you'd expect to see on a lower division kit or West Ham (same thing, soon enough).

Going to be a key part of the Villa 'brand' for the forseeable though. I must have missed all those many previous successful Villa sides wearing checks. If they can do it in such a way as to not make the kit too 'busy' like this seasons effort  - maybe slightly different shades of claret for the body and plain sleeves - it won't look quite so bad.

Is this based on that kit mock-up thread on VT? If so, it's just someone decided to do a mock up of HTC as sponsor, so nonsense.

As the owner of the excellent HTC Desire HD I would be happy with that

In my ideal world, I would go Adidas as prefer their styling, usual claret and blue at home but with light blue socks instead of the current monstrosity and claret and blue piping on the shorts

Away from home, all white with claret and blue piping

All a matter of personal taste, mine reflects my 70s Villa upbringing, still my favourite era for following the Villa

What happened to the old days where if you didn't have a sponsor for the time you wanted to get your kit on sale you just released it without a sponsor?!

Wasn't there a season towards the end of the 90s where we played the first few months without a sponsor?

I suppose the issue now is that a sponsor wouldn't want to pay as much if the shirt was already on sale.  It does annoy me though so I'd be tempted to fuck the sponsor - just get it on sale pre-summer holidays so we actually sell some and get a bit of cash in!

This.

I haven't bought a non-retro top since 1998/99. The least tempted I've ever been to blow my cash on one is this year. Two horrendous offerings, in my opinion.

The only thing that may tempt me back would be a 'classic' looking top that is made available with the option of having no sponsor on it.

The checks are part of the club's branding. All about us being distinct from the other claret and blue mobs. The checks are everywhere you look, season tickets, programmes, inside the ground and on the kit.

HTC they were talking to as well as Macron about the kit.

No, they wanted to renegotiate the contract and we told them to fuck off. Fulham didn't seem to share that viewpoint and took it in the rear to maintain the deal. Either way, the shirt sponsor won't be Fx Pro.

Quote
It must be the shirt as people can buy it. They surely would have a crap tonne of legal problems if
a) they attempted selling a fake shirt as real
b) showed that image to everybody who pre-ordered it then gave them something completely different by the time deliveries came about.
c) made up a shirt and leaked it as the official villa shirt.

It's very strange and untraditional that the kit has been unveiled before its official launch.

I think it's awful.
I hate the white socks (we are Villa, not West Ham), the blue extended on the shoulders and also the checks that bring two different shades of claret on te body.
I expected  a proper Aston Villa dark claret for the 30 rd anidversary of the 1981 title, but this is by far our Nike worse kit.
I am always eager and anxious to see the new kit and I can't believe this awful outcome.

From SCG11:

Quote
As of yet there is no sponsor for the club shirts and therefore one option the club is considering is that the new strip maybe made available without the sponsors name. However if people do purchase one, then you will be able to return the shirt to have the sponsors name on at a later date. The kit is due out July for away and August for home. There will be no discount for the strip even though last years only came out 5 months ago.

Well if this IS real I am dissapointed that we didn't reflect the '81 kit in some way.

IMHO this is pretty boring, and I normally prefer classic kits. I don't get the checkerboard either even if it is part of establishing a corporate look. It is messy on the shirt.

TBH the shirt just about sums up the Club for me at the moment.

What's the fashion perspective on checks ?
Do they make you look fat(ter) or thinner ?
This will determine my decison whether to buy or not.

Thicker, probably.

Never mind the quality, feel the width.

From SCG11:

When did SCG11 take place?

I can't imagine too many people returning their shirt to have the sponsors logo applied.

I like it. Just need to get rid of the FxPro logo and see what the new sponsor looks like. At least the checks aren't as hideous as the current kit, and it looks like Nike might have made us a decent shirt after last season's lazy effort.

And we've released an official statement saying that a prototype image has been circulating, it isn't the finished design and to buy the kits from the club shop when they're out. Is the kit posted on our previous page the one JJB had up?

I'll bet there was a right 'OH FUCK' moment in the Villa marketing department this morning when they realised the kit details were out there.

I would guess the only finalising of the design is the new sponsors name.

It's a shame in one way that it always gets leaked in this way, they'd probably be better off releasing a load of different designs into the electronic world so no-one knows which is the real one.

Good news. Even if I agree with those who think  that he only finalising of the design is the new sponsors name.

I have made a poll between the members of the Latin Lions and there is no one that considers it better than AWFUL, I think it's a record.

I really like that actually, the checks are quite understated, and the kit retains a traditional feel with a new twist, which is I suppose the most you can hope for really.
Title: Re: Next seasons kit.
Post by: FatSam on May 04, 2011, 01:19:25 PM
I'm happy with the shirt and shorts, especially if the new sponsor is something unoffensive. The fundamental aspects are there; claret body, blue sleeves, white shorts etc. Its certainly an improvement on this season's abomination, although its a shame about the white socks.

If the club insist on launching a new kit each season, then it puts a lot of pressure on the designers to come up with something different. As long as they stay within the parameters of claret body, blue sleeves, white shorts, and blue socks I'm generally happy - although I feel that overall sales are probably not helped by launching a new kit each year as people are put off buying something they will only get a year's wear out of.

Post by: JJ-AV on May 04, 2011, 01:38:45 PM
Kit is nice, I'm not too arsed about the checks when they're different shades of claret, just the thought of Claret and Blue checks that I wasn't in agreement with.

White socks though? Not happy with that.

The statement from the OS is interesting. To me the leak was delberate, and a way to gauge opinion. They might have other final designs that they are considering, and this version might be the leading contender. What better way to get early feedback than using cyberspace and social media. Based in the reaction they would have had a more conservative and/or expressive design that they could have turned to.

The away kit should be interesting.
Title: Re: Next seasons kit.
Post by: JJ-AV on May 04, 2011, 01:48:13 PM
One thing I would say is that the bottom half of the away kit will probably have a fair bit of blue on it, as the shorts or socks are both white on the home.

I guarantee you they are. You have to remember that Nike are behind them, and despite some of the delays and issues we've seen, they are arguably the number one world wide sports fashion brand. They know exactly what they're doing, and much of it is very deliberate.

Better than this years, not as good as the first Nike / last 32 Red kit.

Someone was selling a load of those on ebay, home and away, without the sponsor. I went into a frenzy and bought about five of each. I never wear them.

Future generations will thank me.

Frankly that story is a load of bollocks.  Mocking up a page, that is identical to hundreds of others on the website, just to get an idea what it would look like is a load of tosh. They just happened to have some promotional photos that Nike send out to retailers to let them know what the kit might look like in a break from tradition of trying to keep the kit secret?

Or, if the image was indeed, JJB's own, then they've been sent the kit to photograph - which is even more incredible.

Do they think we're fucking stupid? If that isn't the kit I'd be very, very, VERY suprised.

As the poster above said, it was launched at a HTC roadshow - along with lots of other apps which they wanted to use to push their hardware - I don't see that as much of a link beyond "here's a high profile, new app which will get awareness in this week's location".

It wasn't really much of a collaboration beyond that.

Thanks. Just seen the kit... looks like a good template and fit, not too sure about the checked squares though lol.

I'd like us to stay with Nike, #1 sports brand, but if we don't renew with them I wouldn't mind us being sponsored by Under Armour. I like Under Armour.

Both of those are awful. We have never had round collars - do they think we're West Ham? It's nearly as bad as Macleish for manager. On the plus side at least they'll both only be around for a year.  Why Nike don't just give us the collar from this

with the rest of the design from this, in claret and blue

How fucking hard is it for the owners of our club to realise that all we want for a home kit is: claret and blue shirts (with claret and blue collar), white shorts (light blue when they clash) and blue socks and for the away: white shirts with claret and blue trim, claret shorts and white socks. Surely it isn't rocket science? Just like its not rocket science to realise we don't want some blue nose twat in charge of team affairs. Honestly, it boggles the mind sometimes!!

And what if McLeish starts with 5 wins in 5 games? If you are a true Villa fans you should back your manager, or at least give him the opportunity to let him prove you wrong or right. If he is eventually hired. You can protest, but if he is hired, you will only hurt your team if you continue to protest

hits who in the pocket? Oh the club. The club you support - right? Which in terms leads to lower revenues, and less to spend on players and ground improvements. Yep, makes sense. Don't by the kit if you don't want to or can't afford to, but you're a fool if you think it serves any purpose as a protest.

Looks like something that would struggle to sell on Wilton Market. Dreadful.

I think the idea of wearing socks as evening gloves (over the elbow) could catch on with the players who already like snoods.

I will have to wait until i see it in the flesh but 1st impression is it looks like something a team in the Sunday leagues would have

Pretty fucking awful

I wonder how much input the club has in the kits with the powerhouse that is nike - i bet they almost tell us what they will be offering  - this is what it looks like as i cannot see anyone connected to Villa actually saying that is the prefererred choice. IT looks like they have a job lot left over and have though "this will do for villa"

Anyway, this shirt will actually benefit from a decent sponsor logo, I think.
It's not completely horrible but I'm not in love with it either.

Ghastly, far too much claret and a very odd shade of it too and I can't stand the claret shorts

I so wish Adidas did our strip as I am confident we would get what I personally have always wanted - an all white away strip with blue socks and claret and blue piping on top and shorts. As you can see, I am grounded in the mid to late 70s!

I never used to like Adidas but ive seen some cracking Adidas kits lately especially in Europe .  I would like to see us go Adidas ..

Not impressed with that away kit ..

I agree. Much prefer Adidas styling, miles better than Nike for me. And not just in the football arena, always buy adidas running gear too...

Funny how the sponsor hasn't been leaked. I find that strange because there seemed to be quite a few 'ITKs' who seemed to know who our new manager was going to be. No one predicted of course because no one knew. The thing is, if you really are in the know, you don't tell people on a message board without their say-so because you'd lose you source. It's that simple, innit.

I have a feeling that shirt has very low level lighting on it to show off the chequered pattern. In normal or brighter light (outdoors) it should appear brighter, whiter and the pattern less obvious.

Just been viewing the pictures of the new away shirt, which I really like.

One observation: the club badge appears to be stuck on the shirts, as the sponsers are - it isn't a woven badge. Can anyone confirm that ? Is this the new Nike way, i haven't seen the other shirts just released as of yet?  I'm very disappointed if that's the case.

I didn't think last years kit was good quality either. It felt way too thin for my liking so if it's the same sort of material those comments shouldn't be surprising. The Acorns kit from a couple of seasons back was great quality and Nike haven't come close to that since. The design is good, the material just doesn't do it for me.

Ahhh, remember all the questions to the General about the last kit and would it be around for two seasons considering the delay in getting it.

There was a considerable lack of openess from them on it, even though we all knew that it would probably be the shortest kit launch we have had.

And then they had the amazing statement on the club site along the lines of "due to delays in getting the sponsor sorted you may find shirts in the shops without the sponson on! so please buy from Villa shops to ensure you get the sponsors name on it, or you can call into the shop and we will put it on for free!"

If I got one without the sponsor I would be very very happy!

So last season they had a manufacturer of football shirts who couldnt make a football shirt and now this season they couldnt get the sponsor sorted before the kit went into production!

Coupled with the managerial merry go round, I wouldnt be suprised if the new home kit is just a bag of skin paint that you apply yourself!

I asked the guy in Villa Village about the kits, He said the ones on display were quick mock ups as the little holes will only be on player issue kits not replicas.

the ones on display at the moment have stuck on nike ticks and villa badges, these will be sewn on the genuine articles.

anyway I guess we'll see tomorrow!

The away one looks OK, but Nike have become boring and complacent.

Adidas in future please AVFC.

If you want Adidas, be prepared for even more boring kits that look like everyone else's (unless of course you're a French team)

I dont agree, I use to hate Adidas but they have done some cracking kits recently , much more interesting than Nike .

Agree, Nike seem to be getting complacent - three claret stripes down the light blue sleeve would look superb !

Nike IMO have been a disgrace

2 seasons of ripping of Lens kits

The home kit available in December

This seasons home kit will probably be out a week before the season starts if we are lucky.

Bugger me I remember when the next seasons kit was available on the last home game of the season.

Fuck me it's not difficult is it

Whoever 'designed' the new goalie kit deserves torturing.

Gunshots to the kneecaps first... then the hands, then cigarette burns to his eyeballs and finally forced to admit publically he was wrong for even contemplating putting the beloved villa emblem on a blue and white kit. Dont get me started on the pink & black underarms!!!

That GK shirt is seriously taking the p***. Royal Blue for any Villa Shirt is a joke, are Nike totally incapable of producing a shirt with some claret and blue. Photoshoppers how about home GK of  Black with claret  & blue under arms and away sky blue with claret & white under arms.

FFS there's plenty of other options!

Please not white socks! PLEASE!

How much do Nike design the shirt, and how much imput does someone at the club have? And who, exactly?
This could lead to us having to form a committee....!!!

Nike design our shirts by looking at old Lens FC shirts and thinking that will do for those cocks in Aston.

Getting a home shirt before August would be a bonus

After all the fuss over where we got our new manager from, for the club to then proudly display his first signing in a royal blue shirt really is beyond taking the piss.
It makes you wonder if anyone with half a brain is still working in our marketing or public relations department.
You'd think that somewhere along the line someone would have said "hang on a minute, maybe this isn't a good idea".

I don't really care what colour the goalie top is, but I agree completely.

It's just ridiculously easy to avoid cock-ups like this, yet we seem to make them at every possible opportunity. Whoever is in charge is either terrible at their job, stupid, or both.

My son has just bought the away shirt from Chav Magnet. He came home wearing it and it swamped him. When we looked at the shirt it was tagged as 'Age 10/11 but was actually an 'Age 12/13' shirt!

We took it back and got him the correct size (10/11) and that shirt was tagged as 'Age 9/10' ffs! In fact, every shirt we looked at had the wrong size on the tags. The staff said they had arrived like that from the manufacturer.

Be interesting to see if Nike (or whoever tagged them) have been as careless with the Man Ure or Arse shirts...

Every football fan in the world is fickle, dont just use it as a stick to beat your fellow villa fans with.

And the GK shirt colour maybe petty, trivial or even insignificant to you, but Aston Villa should NEVER play in blue & white.  So yes, it does matter!

Green, yellow, black, white, purple, orange... all potential colours. Not royal blue with white writing.

Who cares? I could understand it if one of our rivals played in blue but I don't consider any Second Division team to be a rival of the Greatest Club in The World.

Plus Man U play in blue quite often, Arsenal sometimes play in white and it's only the goalie's shirt.

They're obsessed with us...

We played a few away games early 90's with black shorts and black socks along with the regular home shirt, that looked quality IIRC. Far better than some of the more recent mix and match away efforts, like that weird looking all claret number.

I'd prefer blue socks on the home kit, but in the grand scheme of things it's not worth demanding the removal of the board over.

Still not sold on the shirt at all but, like most others, I have to admire the decision to go with the black socks. Far better idea than white.

Home shirt looks much better being worn than the promotional images.
Away shirt looks much better on the promotional images than being worn (the grey checks look pretty crap).

Good turnout at Star City last night.

The only thing I can accept of the new kit are the black socks, that are a return to the good old tradition of the pioneers and to the 1957-58 season, when we won our last FA Cup.

Apart from this, the new kit is absolutely awful, for all the details: the chequered pattern, the double shade of claret, the blue sleeves, the nature of the sponsor, the chinese fonts, etc.
I can't forgive the manufacturers do rubbish like that when they would have models to inspire like these, for instance (and we were in the old Division Three):

Great shirt

I think that we should have he a retro kit last year for 30 years since we won the league, but hey with Nike you just have to accept any load of shit they give you.

Archie, your Italian too, Villa should be taking ideas from you !

Must say, I like both kits, but at £50 a pop, they are ridiculously priced - they are terrible quality with a lot of Nike spin about breathable etc ... when in fact, they're Primani quality !!

Went to Villa park to look at getting a top, plumped for the away top in the end .But found it surprising there are no changing room's in the shop so had to strip half naked to try the bloody top on , so although giving Villa £45 i probably derprived them of a lot more as the shop half emptied as i stripped of my top !!!

I agree. I know Nike are going to say the material is good for the players etc etc, but the 2009/2010 kit was excellent in design and the fabric. The last two years I'd agree it does feel cheap. If we don't renew with Nike next season I won't be too upset.

This new recycled plastic bottle material is very limp and very clingy almost like its full of static. The material on the last England shirt, the one like a white polo shirt was very nice, its the 'coolest '( ie evaporates sweat from your body-cool) football shirt I own. I hope we stay with Nike but convert to Umbro which they own for next year.

Puma or, preferably, Umbro next year, please. The "tailored" shirts Umbro are knocking out at the moment could provide us with a shirt worth buying.

Spotted the new kits in Sports Direct in the Bullring on Saturday. New home shirt felt very thin. They'd also pinned the security tag through the AVFC badge which would no doubt damage the shirt! Not keen on the away having seen it in the flesh - the checks look cr*p IMHO. Much better on the home shirt, which I might buy.

Does anyone know if the club shop do the "official" felt-style Prem. lettering? I bought my last shirt from Villa Direct and it had the rubbery letters which aren't as good.

I have to say that given the sweat soaked shirts today - the little holes on the side didn't work did they.

Why does the Claret for the past couple of years look Red? It looked much better when darkened by sweat. I am sure it was darker in the old days. Except for the pink one of course. The club simply has to chose the Claret on a colour palette and stick to it. Whatever the medium.

I think it's the same colour as last year. I do agree it looks a better colour when it's sweated to the full Stilyan. If you want to see a disaster go back and check out that old NTL sponsored top. Now that was almost fuscia or something.

I like those claret Fred Perry tops as well, it's a shame they're stupidly priced. They're doing a nice Claret Polo shirt in the club shop at the moment which has got Fred Perry type sleeves, which is very smart.

Training top looked like cheap market tat  - it was about 20 shades different to the shorts and socks - finally when the team came out it was apparant that the playing tops don`t even match the shorts and socks.

Overall not impressed with the look and quality of the stuff Nike putting out.

Time for a change of supplier?

What relationship is there between our shirt sponsor and the kit manufacturer?

FWIW, Genting are a truly enormous company, way bigger than most PL sponsors, and our deal is one of the biggest in the top flight.

Just because most people haven't heard of them, don't assume this isn't a prestigious, big deal.

It's just an indication of how we have dropped back in the scheme of things. No European football, no England internationals, no competing in the top half leads to a less attractive proposition to potential sponsors/kit suppliers.

I know the club were scratching around desperately trying to find a sponsor, hence why the deal was so late, it also goes against what the club said about the 32 Red being the sponsor.

FWIW I actually like this season's kit with the black socks being a masterstroke,  although I doubt the kit issue will be the main point of discussion in the coming months...

dont agree with this, been to quite a few european cities in last couple of years and i always see villa shirts in the stores. our kit this season is pretty nice i think! I went in to JB sports before that, and couldn't see any Villa shirts so asked a friendly staff member....3 times and eventually he said no, they didn't have any. My Irish accent aint that difficult to understand. How can you work there and not know who Aston Villa are ? Unbelieveable.
