Darren Bent has urged Aston Villa not to sell wingers Ashley Young and Stewart Downing in the summer.
Speculation has suggested the pair could leave Villa Park at the end of the season but Bent says Villa need to keep hold of them if the team is to be successful in the future.
Bent said every player at the club wants Young, who has just over a year remaining on his contract at Villa Park, to stay.
He told Sky Sports News: "Everyone in the dressing room hopes he stays because he has had a fantastic couple of years at Aston Villa and we want it to continue.
"He's a top, top player and, as I said he has been linked to some of the best clubs in the country and when you are playing as well as he is, it is only right.
"And the same with Stewart Downing - he has been fantastic since I've been here, supplying goals for me left, right and centre as well as scoring them and if we can keep hold on to them two players, it will be fantastic."
The striker, who joined Villa from Sunderland in a big money move in January, added: "Obviously, for selfish reasons, for myself and especially ammunition, you want them two players to stay because they supply chances left, right and centre and, as I said, if Aston Villa want to move forward we want to keep our best players and them two are certainly two of our best players."

Yep, we need to keep them. I dont think Downing leaving is on the cards at all because I cant see us recieving a huge offer for him as we might for Young. It would be a shot in the arm for Young to stay and I dont think anything has been decided yet.
Maybe a high profile new manager and a strong summer in the transfer market can persuade him to stay and sign a new contract.
-
Petrov urges Barry not to leave.
Carew urges Milner not to leave.
Bent urges Young not to leave.
There's a pattern but I can't quite put my finger on it.

If he doesn't respond to these kind words, I suggest they take Ashley into a locked dressing room and waterboard the little fucker until he signs a new contract.

Hope you're right but I can't see any way that Young will stay. If his head has been turned by Man Utd then he's off regardless of potential new managers. I think it'll be decided quickly after the season ends which will be a nice change from the previous 'sagas' we've all had to endure with Milner and Barry before him.
If we replace with a player of equal quality I'm not as bothered as I would've been a couple of years ago.

In which case I urge Blackcountryvilla not to leave.

Stuart (no song) Downing has been absolutely immense this season - a season when mediocrity would have been a 'nice to have'.
-
Anyone else thinking Downing's been tapped up too

Immense is stretching it a bit. Without doubt our best player this season, but I'd say he's been on a par with Steven Davis when he was our player of the year.
-
After the Man U Schalke game did anybody else notice Ferguson going out of his way to tap up the Schalke goalkeeper? It was so blatant.

If you had to choose one player to stay at Villa. Which one? Id go with Downing myself.

It was shown on SSN in slow motion, almost as 'an affectionate tribute to the sly old fox's managerial ways...'

Downing has been greatly improved this season (not hard compared to last) but calling him immense???

how long stu got left on his contract btw?

3 years I think. Am sure he signed on a 5 year deal.

I would rather keep Chopper Downing than Ash. Hopefully we keep both.

sell them both and bring back nigel callaghan and sticks

It depends what you mean by stay. If we're able to convince him to sign a new deal, then Young in a heartbeat. However I'd rather us keep Downing long term than keep Young with a year left on his contract.
-
And I'm sure his Sunderland team-mates wanted Bent to stay there as well.
-
I like all the 'we' comments from Bent. He strikes me as a model pro who gets on with his business and scores goals.
Downing - please stay.
Ash - not that bothered to be honest. When he's good he's good and when he's bad...
-
If Downing's going to stay, can we at least learn to spell his name correctly?
It's "Stewart", like the Scottish royal family or the pseudo-Scottish Rod the Mod. Not "Stuart", like the bloke out of Family Guy from Gloucestershire who writes articles for Heroes and Villains.
Sorry, BadEnglish is on holiday somebody has to keep order!

'We' soon becomes 'they' when a better offer comes along. Like any other greedy pro.

You're all very cynical. You should know that Villa players are only interested in the pursuit of trophies, glory and honour for the people of Aston.
Nasty chavvy clubs like Chelsea are only interested in money.

It's hard to play well when all around you aren't.
That's why I think he's been immense, informally !
Immense :-
1. unusually large; huge; vast
2. without limits; immeasurable
3. Informal very good; excellent

Agreed. Downing this season has been miles better than Davis ever was for the Villa. Davis getting player of the season that year was an absolute joke.
-
I wan't to keep Downing but I think AY will leave I would like him to stay but I just can't see it myself.

Agree Taxdodger. Ability wise, a no brainer. Logic wise is a different matter

He doesn't drink and never gets mixed up with girls, football and art is his passion, i would say he is a model pro
-
thought he got mixed up with Ms Bruce ;D
-
And went out with Darren Ferguson's ex-wife for a time.

What I love about Downing iswhen he picks up the ball and charges up field. Absolutely superb, he really drives the attack. The problem is he still can't consistantly cross the ball. If he could he'd be PLayer of the Year not just at the Villa but for every national player award. I still think we've got more to see from him which is why I really hope we keep him.
Ashley has more talent but needs a manager/coach to bring him down to earth and get him doing what he does best. If he does go elsewhere, you can bet that's exactly what his new boss will do and he'll look like bargain of the century.
