I have a Q&A with Gary Shaw tonight for Acorns and i'm looking for some questions to ask him.
Any offerings?
-
Is there any truth in the story that Maradona asked for Gary's shirt?
-
Did he ever feel overlooked by England's managers, or did he just get on with it?
-
Can he bring his boots along this Sunday ?
-
Did he shag Elaine that night we were drinking champagne with Frank Worthington in Elbow Room?
-
Which defender was the toughest you came up against?
-
What does he think of the current day goal celebrations and Wayne Rooney given how minimalist his own used to be?
-
What's his favourite Villa memory?
-
Gary,
Did you really head a brick during your days at Park Hall school?
-
Would he have swapped his first division title and european Cup success, but shortened injury ravaged career, for a for a much longer "normal length" career, but without the title and EC success.
-
Why didn't Barry take the penalty?
-
How good was Andrew Greaves in training?
-
Is he,like me,still bitter about his injury?
-
You fought a long battle to recover from injury before concluding you'd never be the same player. Do you think the penny will ever drop with Michael Owen?
-
Do you think the medical treatment in your time are good enough ? I mean players these days have treatment all over the world ie Dr Richard Steadman for players with knee injuries.
-
Which of the Villa managers appointed to manage the club since his departure from the game would he have liked to have played under?? And which one is he glad he didn't!!!!!!!
-
What was your favourite goal?
What was your most important goal?
-
do you remember a little lad you used to play golf with at Harbourne Golf Club, with unmanageble hair ? THAT WAS ME :-)
-
Do you ever see ads on TV for company's like Claims Direct and think of suing Ian Bowyer (or was it John McGovern, I always get them two confused).
-
Not really a question but a good story...
I bumped into Gary Shaw just the other week in Azim's Balti house in Lozells of all places, on the Saturday night after we'd lost to Wolves.
He'd been to the game and was in an advanced state of refreshment, as were we. Anyway he's a proper Villa fan to the core, he called me over for a chat when I said hello (he was out with his Mrs and mates so certainly didn't have to do that) and spent a few minutes talking about the good old days (although I was a nipper when he played, but he was my first footballing hero), and was good for a few stories.
The best bit was when he talked me through Withe's goal in Rotterdam using small pieces of broken Poppadom for the players, sliding them accross the table as he recreated the goal using an Indian starter!
We then sang a couple of Villa songs (he, bizarrely, started off the "Carlos Cuellar Villa centre half" song), and we left him be.
An all round top man. And I swear to God that's a true story, although the next morning I did have a "did that really happen?" moment.
-
I'm so looking forward to this tonight. I used to be Gary Shaw in the playground at school. I've met him before in the Green Man in Harborne, he is indeed a top top bloke. I'll try and get some pics up tonight!
-
Would you ever consider going into management, top bloke is Gary Shaw a true Legend.
-
Would he swap anything he did achieve for an England cap?

Great story Marlon

Agreed. Right up there with Lee's tale of bumping into Darius in a chippy somewhere outside Telford.
-
What do Gary think of media lack of respect to Aston Villa in general.

He says it it's true so I see no reason to disbelieve him.

The second part of that is almost impossible to answer given the number of choices....
-
Great night Dave, although I'm outta pocket but well worth it. Gary is a genuine nice bloke and you can tell that he has a lot of love for the Villa.
Hope the next few nights that you have are as good and raise some more much needed cash.

Bizarrely he said that it was Graham Taylor and even used the "T"word, but perhaps he was playing to the crowd a little, as he didn't really expand on that.
-
I hope not. He's really gone down in my opinion if so.
-
Wasn't it GT who let him leave the club? Does anyone know if there was harsh words when it happened? Surely he doesnt bare grudges after all these years.
-
Gary Shaw played for Graham Taylor. I remember Taylor describing him as the best finisher at the club when he first came. Shaw was struggling back from injury but played at least once for GT in the second division. I have a memory of him playing in midfield at Villa Park - it was a sad sight.

He played in the 1-0 win against Ipswich Town (in the 2nd Division) when Keown seemed to head it in from the half way line and then the fog came down and you could barely see hte other goal by the 90th minute. Gary played and looked like a player without any confidence, he had a few chances but nothing clear cut and after that I can't remember bhim playing much. Such a shame as he was somthing special!

Yep,hence my username,i honestly believe our history wouldve been different if he hadnt got injured,we havent produced a player like him since, may never again.

Dwight Yorke?

The best tribute to Gary Shaw that I remember was written by Bill Shankly in the Sports Argus around 1981 when he said he would be the best British striker since Denis Law.

Funny how people's encounters, recollections and memories vary. Shaw finshed up his career just as I started going to games, and my only 'live' encounter with him was in a Harborne pub. I was about to drive a Fiat Panda from UK to Mongolia for Charity. The club had donated shirts to me by way of sponsorship (to raffle, give away, whatever). Seeing Shaw was in the pub, I explained the cause and asked him if he might please sign a couple of them.
He tried to charge me.
Enough said.
Legend he may be, but like its what you do as a person that counts most. Lasting impression left, and not a good one.

Wow that is a surprising insight.
-
Definitely. He was more than happy to sign a shirt I asked him to at the most recent Old Stars match.
-
He played in an era when after his career ended he was probably faced with the necessity to work, I can recall being told that he was a rep with Bass for a time, whether that's right or not I couldn't say, but as we all know there was certainly a different pay structure in place back then and given how young Shaw was when he had to give up the game, I'm sure he had to make a living in some capacity....perhaps times were hard and signing shirts was an opportunity to earn a little cash.....
Irrespective of charging to sign shirts or not, Shaw is indisputably a legend, I'm sure we'd all agree on that.

Did you know you that in 1982 (and thereabouts) you lived just 400 *yards* from Bad English? (Castle Bromwich, you were in Kingsleigh Drive)
