This quote from Ron Saunders has been built up by some of us Villains so much that the circumstances in which it was said have been somewhat lost. In this brilliant season 1980-81 review by Danny Baker, there is footage of the actual quote (from 7:03 in): &feature=related
It was said just after we lost 0-2 at home to Ipswich.
I am a bit drunk but I think the whole attitude of 'Do you want to bet against us?' should be taken into the last few games by the fans, and hopefully we'll beat relegation.
Up the Villa. Hic!
-
I'll have a pint of that, Stuart. My shout
-
Quick everyone, the milky bars are on damon !
-
Thanks for posting this Stu. Brilliant ...what a team that was.

What a day we had at Arsenal that day.
-
The score was 1 - 2.

No worries!

What a manager and a team to be proud of.
-
Would've been two all if the referee hadn't turned down the most blatant penalty appeal of all time.

Enjoyed the film

Wish i'd been alive to witness this. The boys should be sat down and shown this sort of thing to remind them of who they are playing for. Not that i'd imagine they'd give a damn mind.
-
Brilliant.
I can see myself on the South Bank in the crowd jumping up and down, where did all my hair go?
-
Awesome support on that last day. I've heard estimates of anything between 14000 and 27000 villa fans at Highbury on that day. Also supposed to be record figures for away support at an English domestic game. Can anyone confirm?
-
Not confirmation, but from memory there being 19,000 tickets for sale - standing.
There were some seats as well if IIRC.
-
19k amazing support!
-
19k that we sold, there were Villa in every stand though, so plenty more on top of that.
-
Shit support m'lord
-
I just wish i could have been there at the time to witness it.

Beat me to it.

I saw you pulling it out till Mboro scored the second against Ispwich!
-
Just watching that the other thing that strikes me is Ron, Sir Bobby Robson, Cloughie and BFR coaches to reckon with the best overseas around here now however where are home grown?
-
Brilliant.

I can remember you with a great comb-over the last time you played for us, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're as bald as a coot now.

The score was 1 - 2.
Correct, midweek game, didn't Gates & Brazil score ? think we were 2 down then got 1 back
It was a nice sunny spring evening remember that much

Do they still claim they brought 100,000 to VP in the mid 80s?

Seconded - the general concensus in the nationals that weekend was that we took 20,000 to Arsenal and that it was the largest official travelling support in the league in memory.
There were Villa fans scattered in the North Bank and east stand in addition to the 1000 or so official allocation in the west stand but only in small pockets, certainly not in large numbers (IIRC of course).

No, it was closer to 250,000

QPR brought that many here when they got promoted in the mid-sixties.
-
when the final whistle went and the away end is celebrating, did you see that amount of people running on to the pitch from the arsenal sides?
19k that day, i would say in my best Jim from corrie accent "Son, your mother is a whore"
-
We had 16,000 tickets for the Clock End and they sold out in seven hours.

I feel this thread has been derailed a bit. I didn't post that footage up so we could all talk about how good the 1980-81 team was (and it was a very good team), I posted it up because the attitude of the comment 'Do you want to bet against us?' needs to be taken into every match we have left.
The chips are down once more. With 110% backing from us fans, we will get the required results. Yes, I'm paraphrasing another great Villa manager :P
And yes, I've had a drink again. What? Its been a weekend of birthday parties!
-
Well said Stu, it's a great line and one all Villa fans should remember plus it has been my tagline since I joined the forum!
