Title: New contract for Marshall

Aston Villa's reserve goalkeeper Andy Marshall is set to sign a new contract with the Barclays Premier League strugglers.

Marshall, 35, provides back-up to Brad Friedel and is in his second spell at the club.

The former Coventry player has still to make his debut under Villa manager Gerard Houllier but he has impressed sufficiently to earn a new deal and has replaced Brad Guzan, now on loan at Hull, as the second-choice goalkeeper.

Marshall, whose current contract ends in June, confirmed: "I'm just about to sign a new contract so it is very pleasing because I really enjoy being at this football club.

"It can be frustrating (being back-up goalkeeper) but I've gone from number three to number two.

"It will be hard to dislodge Brad Friedel who has been phenomenal and it will take an injury, not loss of form.

"It's not being defeatist, it's being realistic."

Most goalkeeping number 2's do fuck all, unlike a lot of them, he doesn't come across as a whinger about it.

Good. At least that's one player we don't have to replace in the summer.

I dont think I would if I was paid 10 grand a week to do sod all.

At least with someone like Guzan he could deputise for Cup games

Yes, absolutely phenomenal.

seems a daft thing to work yourself into a tizzy about. He's a reserve keeper providing a bit of cover who cost us sod all. no different from half a dozen other premiership reserve 'keepers.

At least he will give us experience on the bench.

Won't he be number three again when Guzan comes back?

He could be Guzans number 2 if we're relegated

Sounds like he really loves it at the Villa. There must be a terrific atmosphere in the dressing room if we're hearing stuff like this.

Premiership reserve goalkeeper, almost as good a job as an airport fireman... all training and hardly ever having to do your job for real...

He might even be a half-decent centre half.

If he's a good influence on the young lads and reserves fair play.
I'd nearly give him a go in place of Friedel in whom I have increasingly less confidence.

They have let Elliot Parish out on loan for the rest of the season too.

Indeed and most PL clubs have at least 3 or 4 goalkeepers who can all step in.

Friedel should have been dropped / rested and Marshall given at least a couple of games
Whenever ive seen him warming up he looks decent

Going by that method we should just pick the players that score in the warm up shooting.
