I don't know whether this deserves a thread of its own.
The main headline on the back page of todays Times:
Liverpool have indentified Ashley Young as their leading target for an extensive summer building programme, and their priority is to beat ManUre and Spurs for his signature. Apparently Liverpool tried to sign Young in the final 24 hours of the January transfer window, but Villa were unwilling to sell and at that time remained hopeful of persuading him to accept a contract offer of £80,000 a week, which would have made him the best-paid player in the club's history.
-
reckon he'll end up at the mancs. He's not gonna stay here now
-
Still can't believe Man Utd would want him, he's simply not good enough for them.
He's Liverpool bound.
-
As long as it isn't Spurs..
-
Whoever pays the most money please.
-
i wouldn't say the mancs options are that good. giggs is way past even veteran stage, nani etc., flatter to decieve. he's a good player in the right team and would do a job for them
-
As Von Bentleburger said above, he's nothing like good enough for Man United.
-
As Von Bentleburger said above, he's nothing like good enough for Man United.
Maybe, but then I'd say the likes of Fletcher and O'Shea aren't either, and Ash is at least as good as them. Playing wide in a side like there's I think he'd prove to be worth the £12m or so they'd be paying for him.
-
If he plays to his best he is. Remember a couple of years ago when we all laughed at the idea of selling him for less than £30 million? I doubt Fergie would waste him in the middle, he would be (annoyingly) brilliant for them.
-
At least let's get an auction going, then we might get a little bit more for him. I don't care where, highest bidder please.
I would prefer him to go to Man U to be honest, at least he'll win things. I know we're a shambles at the moment, but I really don't think Liverpool are that much better than us, so it will be like Barry and Milner going to City.
And we will miss him, we really will.
-

Didn't they come through the ranks?
They haven't had to shell £15m out for them.
-
I think AY would be perfect for the bin dippers
Lets be honest both think they are much better than they really are
-

I wonder given last season and this, is he past his peak form?
-
I wouldn't mind him going to Spurs if it meant we could keep Walker.
-
I have only watched AY in the flesh so to speak this season and last season.
IMO he has been good but nothing above that. The only player I have seen in this time who was doing the business week in week out was Milner
-
I would take him in the car myself for 15-20 mil
Maybe in a team where he is no longer the big bollocks he thinks he is he may rediscover his form - at the moment far from being our best player i actually think he is becoming a liability and detrimanetal to the teams shape and play
-
Well, as he has moved back down south I would say he is Spurs bound
-
I would be amazed If we get 15 million for Ashley Young!
-

If we get Walker out of it, maybe it's a good thing.
-
Let the bidding war begin
Spurs hold the ace card in walker and maybe cudiccini

Ace card?
How the fuck is Cudicini an ace card?
He's a three of clubs at best.

Walker and £10 million would be nice.
-
Meant walker but cudiccini would be a good replacement for Friedel
-
How? He is 37 years old and has played about three games in the last ten years.
-
Who cares where he goes? Whoever stumps up the most cash gets the man.
-
Yep, should be +15m with those 3 going at it

I could live with that.
If they sell Bale they're going to be loaded so we might even screw a bit more out of them.
-
I think Ash will
- Score the goal that keeps us up against Liverppol
- then get transferred to Liverpool.
The media would love, the pulic would talk about it and sometimes you get the feeling these things are arranged in advance.
-

A while a go we were asking if Spurs would let him go. Now I'm asking myself would he WANT to come here after all that's gone on?

Great, let's have an auction!

Swap for Darren Gibson Tom Cleverley and Johnny Evans.
-
Swap for Darren Gibson Tom Cleverley and Johnny Evans.
I hope this is completely off topic, and not related to Ashley Young because I wouldn't want any of them. Also we should only go for straight cash unless it's a deal involving Walker.
-
In an ideal world I would agree but its time we got in the real world were not going to be challenging top 6 anytime soon and need to rebuild a SQUAD!
-
Given recent events, I would imagine GH will want to start with players he knows want to be 100% dedicated to the club. Ash won't sign a new deal it appears and so he won't want any distractions heading into the 2011/2012 season. I expect that he will go in the 12-15 million range.
I don't know that he isn't good enough for Man U. When they signed Nani it appeared that he wasn't good enough either but he's come on brilliantly. Ash will know that if he goes to Man U he won't be guaranteed a damn thing. Set pieces, starting place and certainly not the captaincy. Nothing will be guaranteed, and he will be rotated with everyone else. He will have to up his game and likely will do because the situation, the competitive environment and quite frankly, by having better players around him.
Also, the money won't be a barrier. Man U have shelled out a lot of money on dross over the years as well as on some very good players. They paid a lot of money for the Bebe bloke in the summer and he's been a disaster.
-
Spurs awaits.
-
If he goes to Spurs, we keep Walker and there is that extra from Supergrass they have knocking about that I wouldnt mind, Bale I think his name is.
-
Wherever he goes I think it will be as a wide left player. Can only see Spurs being in for him if they sell Bale for sillybucks. If Bale stays they've got him on the left and Aaron "eyebrows" Lennon on the right. Having said that if they do get loads of money for Bale it could spark a nice bidding war between Spurs, Manure and 'Pool.
Personally I think he will end up at Manure - wide left as a replacement for Giggs. SRAlex won't put up with any of his histrionics and so he'll have to focus on what he's good at rather than falling over and waving. Of the three potential destinations for some unknown reason I find this one the least offensive

Definitely Liverpool. Daglish will be given the money to make Liverpool British again, Ashley will go there along with Adam... And maybe Cahill or Jarvis.
-
Well, as he has moved back down south I would say he is Spurs bound
If we get Walker out of it, maybe it's a good thing.
Walker and £10 million would be nice.
I could live with that.
So could I, as long as the money is invested wisely.
I still think Scott Sinclair could take the place of Ashley Young.
-
I would take 10 millions plus Walker and then use the money to buy Matt Jarvis or a hot foreign winger
-
I think we'd be lucky to get any money as well as Walker. Spurs don't want to sell, I doubt he'd push for a move, he's just got into the England squad etc. If he were on the market he'd be going for £10m+. We'll do well to get more than for Ashley.

We bought him for £9 million and he's improved immensely since then.
£15 million will be a minimum but I actually think we will get more than that for him.
-
He has one year left on his contract.
We won't get £15 million for him. We will get about £12 million, or zero a year later.
-
I reckon Spurs would value Walker at £5m, so we'd be lucky to get £10m on top of that.
Having said that, I can't imagine why Walker would come here, i'm sure he'll have better options than a lowly team like us.
-
I reckon it will be £12-17million depending on how much of a bidding war there is.
-

Comparing apples and oranges there. Flethcer and O'Shea do solid jobs for them as reliable, solid squad players. They do the simple things very well and that is what is expected of them. They arent expected to come up with a moment of magic to win a game at the very highest level, which is what Ashley would be expected to do. I dont think he is up to it. He has done it on too irregular a basis for us for me to believe that Fergie would be interested in him. They have Valencia and Nani on the wings. I imagine Fergie's preference for another winger would be to find another youngster in the hope he becomes the next Ronaldo, Nani etc.
Young to Liverpool makes sense though. Having signed Carroll they need wingers to put crosses in for him. Not that Carroll is quite that tall for most of Ashley's crosses but the idea works in theory.
-
If manure want him (and I can see why) SAF will get him
-
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Chelsea in for him. They'll likely move that Russian lad on who hasn't worked out and could find a spot for Ash in their squad.
-
Is he definitely leaving?
-
Is he definitely leaving?
I always figure that regardless of rumour etc it's never definite until he's actually ITSOTP somewhere else, but i'd be amazed if he was playing for us next season.
-
Is he definitely leaving?
I'd say 99.99% certain
-
ha HAH, so there is a 0.01% chance of him being here next year.
Holy piss pants batman, everything feels depressing at the moment. Im off to ring some doorbells and run away.

Great post!
-
Well wherever he goes I'll be willing to bet his new manager will have the fucking intelligence to play him in his best position.
-
Great, let's have an auction!
I bid £1 he can mow my lawn
-
I think Ashley Young is a very good player, on his day and on the wing, and yet I wouldn't be too upset when he leaves.
Curious.

Same here, I was more upset when Milner went.
Just need to try and get a good fee for the filthy bastard.
-
He can go to anyone apart from liverpool or sunderland and of course any derby team.
I really hope he goes 2 man u though
-
I think he'll be at one of the manc clubs next season, but liverpool need wingers so we shall see.

Maybe we're just getting used to losing our best player every summer ;)

Let him go to Man City and we'll have Adam Johnson in exchange.

Or Milner, i'd be happy with either.
-
Not sure why people think he's as good as playing for Championship contenders. He'll go to Tottenham and get booed a la Barry when we get drawn against them in the 4th round in the League Cup.
-
I don't think we will make it to the 4th round next year with Rene in charge. Don't forget next season we have to start a round earlier.
-
Sell him to Bayern Munich.
-
I would not want ash playing on the wing for anybody else against us next season.
So hopefully whoever buys him plays him elsewhere.
And the tooth fairy and santa as CBs ....whatever
words fail me. I am a humble supporter but I don't understand.
Why do we keep selling our best players to our rivals?
-
I find it tough going reading The Times' back pages these days. Tony Barret and Tony Evans' reporting about Liverpool is beyond nauseating. I'd guess Ashley will want to be playing Champs League footy next year; if he ends up on Merseyside I'd be surprised.
-
use him to get kyle walker
-
Man United or Chelsea. I reckon Old Trafford though, they have a gaping hole on the left. He has took the piss this season at Villa but a manager like Fergie to keep his ego will check will seem him back to his best I reckon.
Chelsea is an interesting one. Drogba I reckon is definitely off in the summer. Id say they will go back to 433 next season with Torres up top which would suit Young. If he cuts out the diving he is still a player that can go past players and there arent too many of them around.
Spurs is a non runner with Bale and Lennon. Arsenal have too many similar players, always the possibility of City but with Johnson they are probably already covered. Liverpool would be a last resort really.
Another good performance for England will add to his value nicely. Really sad that yet again we are seeing another top player leave, while I had my doubts about whether Barry or Milner would improve leaving Villa, I have no doubts Young despite all his faults this season will improve in a better team with a strong manager.

The way its going he won't be.

clampy, you really need to let go of james , he will not be coming back in the foreseeable future.

So far Ashley has scored 8 league goals in this striking role, amongst that are penalties that he previously did not take.
Last season he scored 14 from the wing.
If that doesn't prove he's not in his best position, I don't know what does.
Here's some seperate evidence from Wikipedia that show's that he's not the player he was.
On 10 October 2008 Young won the Player of the Month award.
This was due to his performances in the 2008–2009 Premier League season. Having also won the award in April 2008, Young joins the list of players who have won the award more than once including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.
On 7 December 2008 in the 3–2 win over Everton, Young scored two goals, one being an injury time winner after Everton's Joleon Lescott had equalised seconds earlier putting his tally for the season up to five. Manager O'Neill later described the player as being 'world-class' in the post-match press conference.
Ashley Young signed a new four-year contract until 2012 on the 4 November 2008. On 10 January 2009 Young was again awarded Player of the Month for December along with manager Martin O'Neill, who won the Manager of the Month award. He became the first ever player to win three FA Premiership Player of the Month awards in the same year
-
I wouldn't mind having Walker from Spurs plus 7 to 8 million but i think he will go this summer i should presume ManUre could be his most likely destination.
-
I'm not at all convince by Walker so to swap him for Young seems ludicrous. Sell him if they want but I'd rather get a player that would be better for us than a right-back.
-

I think Walker is good enough to play right midfield.
-
If we could get Walker and some money I'd be delighted. He can be a useful player and will combine attacking enterprise with greater defensive qualities than Johnson.
Spurs would be insane to get rid of him and persist with the likes of Corluka and Hutton though.
-

I happen to agree that he will go to Man Utd, but people who think we will get anywhere near £20 million are deluded! We have a player who will be in the last year of his contract. Realistically, we will get £10-£12 million or Kyle Walker in a swap.

How is walker £12M?
-
I reckon we'll get £12m-ish for Young.
Walker would be about £5m, but I can't see him wanting to come here.
-
I'm sure Ashley is off in the summer and I don't reckon anyone in the top 4 bar Spurs would be after him so if we got Walker as part of the package that might not be a bad shout. I would hope for lots of money plus Walker though.
-
I'll be gutted if he goes tbh. But he does need to go out back left (although I don't think he's been a failure off the front).
-
Didn't Spurs pay 5 million for Walker in the first place? Judging by his performances for us and the general inflation due to being English, i'd think they'd try and ask for about double that.
-
I think spurs paid in the order of 7m for the two Kyles from Sheffield Utd. At the time naughton was rated higher so I'd guess he made up the larger chunk of the 7ish million.
Either way they've done well out of it. At the time I thought they were mad to sign two young right backs when they already had Corluka and possibly Hutton but sending them both on loan successfully hedged their bets and they'd now make a decent profit. Levy is a cunning little f**ker.
-

An exeptional, young English right back. Glen Johnson went for £18 million, I think if we wanted to buy Kyle Walker it would cost us upwards of £10 million.

How is walker £12M?
A tall, quick, young, attacking, English full back. Glen Johnson went for £18 million and Kyle looks a far better prospect to me. He wouldn't go for less than £10 million as I am pretty sure they paid about £4 million for him before he had played Premier League football/recieved an England call up.
-
Don't think 10m on a right back is where we want to be heading

That doesn't really make much sense. Of the current top six the team that has the best left-sided/attacking midfield option is undoubtedly Spurs.
I'd argue that pretty much anyone would be after him ahead of Spurs.
-
Dalglish and SAF were both at the reebok to watch ash the other week
They are both after him

True enough, I see where your coming from.
I suppose I'm guessing because Spurs have shown interest from the day we bought him. They like to load up on numbers and Ash can play left, right and centre (well maybe not centre!).
I'm just not sure Man Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal would be interested in him. I actually hope he stays and we finally get the best out of him.
-
fuck off young... we gambled 9 .5 m on you... now your a mr big head
