Title: Watching proper Villa players.
Post by: dave.woodhall on March 23, 2011, 03:35:08 PM
This Sunday March 27th the Old Stars are playing Birmingham City All 'Stars' at the Tally Ho Police Training College, Pershore Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B5 7RN, Kick off 12.00 midday.

The game is being played for the Lord Mayor's Trophy and all monies raised will go to the Lord Mayor's charities which are BID Services (Birmingham Institute for the Deaf), PHAB
(Physically Handicapped And Able Bodied) camps, the Stroke Association and
The Burns Centre at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

We're not sure of admission prices yet.

It is hoped that playing for Aston Villa Old Stars will be European Cup-winners Des Bremner, Gordon Cowans, Colin Gibson, Pat Heard, Tony Morley and Ken McNaught, with Paul Merson, Steve Staunton, Shaun Teale, and hopefully Ian Taylor making his debut.

It is believed that Blues squad will include the likes of Devlin, Horsfield, Mooney, McCarthy, Clarkson, Hyde, Gill, Hopkins, Barnett, and O'Connor.

Parkin there is limited. But you can park at the Midland Art Centre and get through to Tally Ho by a small gate at the bottom end of the car park

Are they doing intensive fitness training, practising rapid pass & move and also having a drunken fight one night before the game?!

It's Old Star players - the choice of Old Star fashion is entirely up to you

If Bremner, Cowans, Morley et al show signs of being in good nick, they should be called upon for the Everton game...

Failing that, showing the current lot a few DVDs of thirty years ago would remind them of what they should be aspiring to.

The current lot would just sit there with headphones on flicking through supercar ads before starting a huge popcorn fight.

Im tempted to go along.
I used to watch the old stars regularly in the late 60s when I was a kid.
Johnny Dixon, Stan`the wham`Lynn etc and a few others from the 1957 and 1961 cup final teams.

*** Says here its 11.30am kick off. Fiver admission or a quid for kids and coffin dodgers**

I'm going along to watch. My uncle is playing in this, but unfortunately he's playing for Birmingham. I have a dilemma as to who to support. Blood's thicker than water and all that but I don't think even family can bring me to support them.

Who is your uncle?

Ian Clarkson. Not sure how well known he'll be to anyone who doesn't follow Birmingham. He was their youngest ever captain he tells me (the actual team, not the all stars team.) he played for Stoke, Northampton and Kidderminster and Stafford Rangers as well as some other none league sides later on

He's one of the better examples of that lot. Not that it's saying much, but he's alright.

High praise that he can be considered "alright" despite playing for that lot. I like to think of him as an ex-Stoke player than a Birmingham one as he was 2 matches away from being a Premiership player for Stoke but they lost to O'Neill's Leicester side in the play off semis. In saying that I'd rather think of him as an ex-Kidderminster player than a Birmingham one.

This is off their website so I'm guessing this is the kit the Villa old stars wear:

A bar could be dangerous with some of ex blues players.

Pity I'm not around I'd have enjoyed taking my lads to see what football was like when I was younger... you know – standing up to watch, being able to keep the top on your bottle of dandelion & burdock, vicious career-ending tackles from behind, thumping an opponent across the back of the head when the ref isn't looking.
Next time maybe.

Which buses go past Tally Ho?

45 and 47, get off at Cannon Hill Park and it's less than a five minute stroll.

Thanks Dave - I think we're gonna do the 16 and 61/63 combo from the Jewellery Quarter/Navigation Street.

I guess I should be making sure that the camera battery is charged about now.....or I could have another glass of wine.

Not this time. 1-1 at H-T then Blues fielded a second set of players whilst ours were largely unchanged. Ian Taylor limped off after a few minutes due to a calf strain. Morley and Shaw were present but did not play.

Quite enjoyed it yesterday. It's a pity the sun decided to come out after the game ended though. Ken McNaught's hairstyle has'nt changed a bit and Stan Staunton is looking a bit porky nowadays.

And who was that bloater in goal for them in the 2nd half?
Title: Re: Watching proper Villa players.
Post by: Andy_Lochhead_in_the_air on March 28, 2011, 08:53:21 AM
Ian Taylor opened the scoring before he limped off, but apart from Fatty Foulke in goal for Small Heath in the 2nd half that looked their 'youth team' of 'veterans'.

Yeah I was just looking at the pictures (posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/17181772@N00/sets/72157626240236769/) and their team looked in far better shape than ours. O'Connor and Kenna only stopped playing a few years ago and Devlin is still playing!

Can you believe this made the BBC main Sports website

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/12879695.stm?

Would it have even been mentioned had Villa won 5-1?

No doubt the person who looks after the Blues section of that site is still having a wank over it now!

Lovely unbiased reporting there. No mention of the Knuckledraggers putting out two separate teams thus ensuring that they were fresh-legged for the second half.

Small Heath definetely cheated playing the kids.
However a 5-1 reverse is unacceptable and I intend to arrange 'Nicholl Out' marches and demonstrations when they next play.

He was in The Dome on Tuesday nights every week. Student night - the tight arsed sod. Nicked his and his crowds drinks one time.
