I have to say of all the stuff i've ever found on youtube this has got to be one of the most pleasing. One of the greatest nights ever. How we only won 1-0 i do not know, we had shot after shot, Whittingham hit the bar and right up to the final whistle we were forcing corner after corner. Possibly one of the last great nights at Villa Park in terms of atmosphere, despite the Holte Upper not being open at that time the noise we made was incredible.
Everyone rightly remembers the 2-0 Nielsen match but for me this has always surpassed it and helped by the fact we actually progressed into the next round as a result. The 1990 match was magnificent but theres always this nagging thought that we actually lost the tie on the whole. Anyway, a glory night typical of the BFR era and easily the last great and memorable game of his reign as the team couldnt reproduce this kind of form in the league and he was sacked two months later.
Edit - had we lost the penalty shootout it would have been a travesty. Always remember Parker's flukey look and Phil King's "walk in the park" manner.

This was one of the best nights of my teenage years. It was only my second time to Villa Park and me and my stepdad hotfooted it up to VP from deepest Kent after I finished school that day.
Pushing it a bit to say 'we used to be good' on the blurb for that clip, as the 1994/5 season and this one are broadly comparable in terms of results/league position. But at least we took Europe seriously.

What a great night it was and what a match. We were behind the goal in the Lower North, owing to the Holte being closed, and were in the ground singing and dancing until well after final whistle. They had to kick us out eventually.
Another memory I have of that match is just how good Bergkamp was. Every time he had the ball he was booed, nearly always a sign of a good player, and he just never gave the ball away.
One of the great Villa Park nights.

Anyone spot a certian young spotty oink at the end?
-
Nice hair cut from Lee, what a great night that was!
-
He's a wurzel, that Phil King.

Fantastic find. What a night. I enjoyed them years under Big Ron.

Me too, funny seeing Fashanu on the bench too... shudder!

Just spent the past half hour looking up classic games like that one. Here's hoping we have more of the same to look forward to.
Get behind the boys this Saturday.

I was a regular Holtender back then and loved that era. Fantastic stuff.

I was Lower North for that game, right behind the goal and a perfect view of all the penalties. I always remember how few Inter fans there were, it seemed like there was only a couple of dozen.
Still prefer the first Inter home game, in theory the gulf between the two sides was massive and we shouldn't have had a chance so victory was that much sweeter.

That was because he div..., uhem, played for the penalty in the first leg IIRC.

After that, simply awful to lose to Trabzonspor. And I know it's not in the same league (the Europa League in fact), but it was almost as bad to beat Ajax and then go down to MSK Zilina.

Well remembered, Somniloquism. I'd forgotten that entirely.

One of my abiding memories of that night was how noisy the crowd were despite the upper tier of the Holte not being open yet.

Was trawling eBay the other day for some more stuff to add to my Villa collection and found "The Italian Job". It shows the build up of the boys heading off to Italy for the 1st leg with highlights of that match and then the full 120 mins plus shootout at VP. Excellent stuff !!! And all for £1.50 ;D

still got that vhs myself although i havent got a vhs player anymore! Will have to convert it. It was one of those nights that felt like we'd actually won a cup final even though it was only the first round.
