Having thought about it, I think our best best of staying up is for Le Twat to return our line up to as near as he can to the one that wasn't too bad for the past three seasons. By this I mean getting Young (L), Stan and Collins back in the team, playing Gabby alongside Bent and Young (A) on the wing.
The current mob clearly aren't doing it and I believe there would be a better sense of togetherness and collective spirit. It's not a time for the younger lads - well not as many as we are playing at present, especially if we concede the first goal at home. It's a time for men to stand up and earn their money.
Those are my thoughts, so I'll await the backlash...
-
Up front I reckon we need Heskey and Bent, with gabby to come on if we're chasing a goal.
Also, Young should be dropped immediately. We don't need players with no commitment and zero passion, who also happen to fail to deliver every game.

Honestly - Young has zero commitment? You watch a different game to me. I don't dispute he isn't playing well, but to say he has no commitment and zero passion is in my humble opion a load of bull.
-
I'd go halfway between now and these basics.
Something like
Friedel
Walker Collins Clark LYoung
Albrighton NRC Makoun/Petrov Delph AYoung/Downing
Bent
If we are chasing I'd bring Gabby/Heskey on for one of the three (prob Makoun/Petrov) and put him up top with Bent.
-
Away from home I would go with your side Sandman, at home though I would have Heskey in for Makoun/ Petrov. It is the strongest line up we can stick out, maybe Cuellar in for Clark. Luke Young always does well at left back, Walker was the only one still trying at the end against Wolves. Heskey at home at least means we can hit him early if need be and there is someone to battle for the ball to relieve pressure.
-
It isn't AYs committment in question it is his belief that somehow because he wants to play midfield it makes him a midfielder.
Back to basics is a good call, apart from Clark i would play senior players when availeable. Young on one wing Downing on the other, Bent and Gabby up front, Cuellar and Dunne centre backs, Walker and Clark full backs. The midfield is the problem
still don't think we have the real mongrel in us to do well there.
-
Mentioned a couple of times that I was sat next to the tunnel on saturday, anyway as the players come off the only two that looked anything like bothered were Ash and strangely Petrov, even though he was'nt playing, you can question Youngs set pieces and petulance etc but its hard to question his effort and desire

Could somebody teach Stewart Downing how to cross a ball and Ashley Young to take a corner?
-
Could somebody teach Stewart Downing how to cross a ball and Ashley Young to take a corner?
Somebody probably could, yes.
Unfortunately it would appear that such a person cannot be found on our coaching staff. Either that or the two young rapscallions are messing around.
Tell you what: I'll have a word in Fabio's shell like and see if he can't arrange something while they are on international duty.
-

Agree with you about the corners Mark, but Downing delivered some wicked crosses on Saturday, one that Makoun should have scored with.
-
I'd go with the following in the next game
Friedel
Walker Collins Cuellar Young (L)
Young (A) Reo Coker Delph Downing
Bent Gabby
Subs: Marshall, Dunne, Baker, Petrov, Heskey, Makoun, Albrighton.
-
To Chris Smith's Eternal anguish, i'd go 4-4-2 with Bent and Heskey up front.
The current system isn't working and nobody can tell me we're getting the best out of Young in that position.
-
Wasnt `Back to basics` the rallying call and initiative to relaunch John Majors government ?
-
We're pissing in the wind with these suggestions though.
The obstinate bastard will carry his tactics through to the bitter end, with the emphasis being on bitter.
-
Why is randy dithering ? we know what's coming at Goodison ! We will be 2 down inside 15 minutes and end up with a drubbing
-
Could somebody teach Stewart Downing how to cross a ball and Ashley Young to take a corner?
Yes, but not until the Summer as MON taught them previously and you can't change mid season; or so we are told!
-
Why is randy dithering ?
Maybe because he cannot see what the alternatives are? - I can't see who might come in and asking KMac to do the job would be unreasonable and probably unlikely to keep us in the P'ship.

It was also a Viz character.
Gerard would make a good Viz character.
Pierre Le Dunderhead and his disaffected team.

We need to do something before it's too late.

Friedel

Bent Gabby

Agree 100%
Bent and heskey together are too alike

My view on back to basics is not so much a change in formation but in our approach to the game.
I remembered what I used to say about the Baggies under Mowbray, they had to earn the right to play the football he was wanting them to. We need to do the the same.
When Delph came on for Baker I said to my mate that we must be going for a record for the shortest average hight ever for a Premier League side. We need some bite in the side for Everton and Newcastle, players who will not hide and can stand up to the physical intimidation. They also need to be brave in possession.
I'd think about a midfield three of Petrov, Reo Coker and Delph with Young and Downing out wide and Bent on his own up front.

Also a rather good club in Leeds in the early nineties, I've never seen so much fanny in one place, anyway I digress.
-
I'd drop Young.
I do rate him, but he's playing for himself now and not the team and we simply can't afford that. In his place I'd play Delph as an attacking central midfielder. No lack of work rate there and he also has the ability to score/create. Behind him I'd play NRC and Petrov to give us a good solid feel as, especially away to Everton, we need to stop leaking goals first.
Downing and Albrighton wide with Bent up top.
Defensively I think we need the Collins & Dunne partnership back. Walker is an easy pick for RB, but LB is a little different. I'd go with Luke Young as was defensively solid there and as I said - we need a team to not lose first. Call it negative, but that's what I think.
So......
Friedel
Walker
Collins
Dunne
L Young
Albrighton
Petrov
Delph
NRC
Downing
Bent.
Still a decent bit of attacking ability, but a strong spine with the Collins/Dunne and NRC/Petrov partnerships. The option would be Gabby or Heskey on the bench and go 4-4-2 if needed.
-
Everton away ? I would take a point now !
UTV
The Doc

Or "Back to Nature" ?
John Major / Fad Gadget..... easily confused !!
-

Agree with you about the corners Mark, but Downing delivered some wicked crosses on Saturday, one that Makoun should have scored with.
Second half, Downing was mainly relying on Walker to put the ball into the box. Downing for all his speed, skill and effort must average about one decent cross per game. We normally score from it but it's still a very poor return.

Good call, without Gab up top, weve missed his pace so we can stretch teams, and alot of the time he'd pull out wide and create some space.
Bent on his own up front makes it too easy for teams to defend. Its a shame that most of us on here can see it,but the one who counts is completely blind to this.
-
Yet when we did play 4-4-2 virtually exclusively we got overrun in midfield and failed to create. We simply shouldn't be married to either and be able to change as the game dictates.

What is grey and smells of Currie?

Yeah, I should have thought that particular connotation through before posting.

Pires seems to be left out here. His experience is what we need in these dark hours. The rest we are stuck with until next time.
I just hope we can keep our heads and escape in the confusion.
-
4-5-1 at Everton for me, Clark and Carlos in the middle, with probably LYoung at LB.
Central midfield 3 of Makoun, NRC, and probably Bradley. For me we looked a small team on sat, and need a bit more height in the team.
I mighteven consider playing Carlos at RB, and bringing Collins in.
Dunne and Warnock.......never again for me.

Yeah but you implied he can't cross a ball, but I gave an example of when he did put in a decent cross. It is a poor average but he can cross a ball, he just doesn't do it enough.

It's an extremely poor average, in fact I'd fancy my chances of matching it. It's all very well and good spending £18m on Bent but a waste if we can't give him service. It was the same last season, poor Gabby had to fight for scraps from our wingers. I'd have hoped GH would have picked up on it by now. We all know that if we get the ball into the box Bent will be there or there abouts. We're just not doing it enough and Downing really has to hold his hand up as the main culprit. Every other part of his game (tackling apart, I've given up on that) is fine. He drives forward with the ball at amazing pace, all he needs to do it get the bloody ball into the box. Bent will do the rest.
