Title: Team Captain
Post by: Salsa Party Animal on March 21, 2011, 07:07:59 PM
Petrov can't play regularly as his legs doesn't last 90 minutes. We know Ashley Young is not a player to be a captain.

Who should we use as a team captain.

Definately NOT Young7 ...........and while I'm at it can we see him on the left or right wing please!!

NRC for me, although it appears he is the scapegoat for Mr Houllier

Reo Coker for me. Heart, passion, no fear. Good captain and should be the first in the team at the moment, and certainly not taken off when we need to win the ball to keep going forward.

Till the end of the season, Reo-Coker. Next season, if we stay up... maybe Cuellar. If we go down and he leaves, Clark.

Ash Young for me as although he went missing a bit against Wolves as did everyone else he has been the player to give 100% week in week out whether he plays well or not.He needs cut out the petulance but was the only player I saw trying to gee the others up at any point.

Other than NRC and Collins I just can't imagine any of the others being captain material, were crying out for a big bastard in the middle of the park who barks out orders and gets the players heads off the floor

To give someone the captaincy who will not sign a contract is wrong in it's self. You look at some teams and they have a whole handfull of captains you could pick. I'm struggling to find one for us but probably NRC.

We need 4 skippers Ash gets the armband but moved back to wing, spud head back four, NRC in mid, and Bent up front, and fucking 4 4 2 get them wound up and lets get ourselves out of this shit. oh and someone like Ian Taylor/Andy Townsend on the touchline barking orders,NO waxwork dummies on the bench thank you

then when we are safe GH and GM fark offfffff you useless pair of pillocks

thank you goodnight

Sorry but although I like NRCs attitude whilst on the pitch he doesnt seem vocal in any way shape or form.Is Martin Laursen busy at the moment?

I don't see anyone at the club that I class as captain material. Which is probably one of many reasons we're so much in the shit.

Richard Dunne would be good but not on this season form.

I think we got captain of Bulgaria, Wales, and Ireland and none of them is ideal.

Give it a rest, please.

I'd go for NRC as captain.

A bit of a contradiction, no?

Possibly Downing or Cuellar.

Actually, why not Friedel? he's definitely the most experienced.
Title: Re: Team Captain
Post by: PeterWithesShin on March 21, 2011, 08:20:29 PM
NRC was on the pitch from the start on Saturday, when did he try and lead us? I never saw him being vocal and/or trying to encourage, gee them up or give them a kick up the backside. The only one I saw do that was AY.

I agree that Clark could be a captain for the future, but looking at the senior players, despite all the internationals etc I can't see any of them stepping up to the plate. Well apart from Dunne if it's piled high with cream buns.

Why not Downing, he's an experienced player, plays most games, looks like he'll stay beyond the end of the season and hasn't got the petulant streak that AY has

Have said this elsewhere, but as well as bringing players in during the summer we need to bring in somebody who will be a leader - a Terry; Gerrard; Keane; Viera.  Since Mellberg/Laursen left we have not had a leader on the field, Petrov was OK but not inspirational.

Title: Re: Team Captain
Post by: ozzjim on March 21, 2011, 10:07:00 PM
No Petrov nor Barry were leaders at all really. I agree that we need to get one. I would have gone with Collins 2 weeks ago - captain of Wales now too so got that to back him up, but he has somewhat pissed on his chips. I think missing out on Samba was a blow in Jan, apparently he lead the team talk at Blackburn to inspire the comeback for the 2-2. We could do with a bit of that.

Wasnt he captain when Boro went down? Downing hides under pressure, its why he failed in his umpteen chances with England. There is no choice for captain really at the moment, the obvious choices - Reo Coker, Petrov and Dunne are all leaving at the end of the season if Houllier remains. From a pure experience perspective, Friedel probably should be but he is in rank form imo.

A bit of a contradiction, no?

I know his contract is due but I didn't know he had been offered one. I got the impression Ashley doesn't want to discuss one until the summer. Has NRC taken the same stance as Ashley? If so I don't know. Like I said we have not got a abundance of leaders have we.

 NCR for me too.

What is it with women and ATM machines?

I'd go with Coker as well.

Being captain just seems to re-enforce Young's one-man-show tendencies. He needs to move back to the left too.
