Title: A memorial
Post by: dave.woodhall on March 15, 2011, 04:16:58 PM
Following a discussion on here a couple of months ago, we have received permission from the club to erect a plaque to those players, officials and supporters who served in wartime. This will be on public display somewhere around the ground.

After talking to a plaque manufacturer, we have come up with suitable wording, along the lines of

In grateful remembrance of those players,
officials and supporters of Aston Villa FC
who served their country in wartime,
and in particular
Bill Bowker, Arthur Dobson,
Alfred Edwards, Billy Gerrish
Walter Kimberley, Albert Rogers
and Dick Roose,
who played for our club
and were later killed on active service
during World War One

Those long uneven lines
Standing as patiently
As if they were stretched outside
The Oval or Villa Park,
The crowns of hats, the sun
On moustached archaic faces
Grinning as if it were all
An August Bank Holiday lark;                                      From MCMXIV, by Phillip Larkin

The plaque will be English brass & bronze with deep embossed lettering. The metal itself is cast from a specified ingot brass/bronze. The raised text, borders and outside edges are hand polished and finished. The thickness of the plaque is approx 4 to 5 mm.

We need to raise £300. A Paypal account is in the process of being set up and the Supporters Trust have agreed to allow us to make cheques payable to them. If you want to pay by this method, make cheques payable to Aston Villa Supporters Trust, at 2 Coton Rd, Walton on Trent, Derbyshire, DE12 8NL. Over to you....

Don't forget World War II.

The plaque is for all wars but those names specifically mentioned were the only Villa Players who lost their lives in a war.

So do this mean Villa didn't lose a player in WWII ?

So do this mean Villa didn't lose a player in WWII ?

No we didn't. Most of our players were in reserved occupations such as policemen and others served away from the front line.

Well done to all concerned. Collins and Dunne should be made to pay for it and clean it every week.

I'll put a cheque in the post and look forward to seeing it in situ.

Well done to Dr Butler who first broached the subject in a question to the General -  and very well done to you, Dave, for picking up the baton and seeing it through.

Do you envisage a formal unveiling? It could perhaps be an event whereby the club invites Villa fans who have seen recent active service in Afghanistan?

A while ago when making a Pay Pal payment I made a mistake with my email address so the receipt bounced. As they had my phone number they were able to call to check and then send it to to the correct one which I considered pretty good customer service.

All done. I went round the WW1 battlefields a couple of years ago. It really does make you humble and feel very very lucky we are a generation that never has to experience anything like the horrors they had to.

Have donated - also in memory of my great-grandfather George E Millard who was killed in action at the Battle of Arras in April 1917. He was the first of generations of Villa fans in our family.

Just spoke to Dave,  we are about 30-40quid shy of target.
Please do not send any cheques now.  I will be turning off donate button as soon as we hit target.
If you have already posted a cheque,  please PM me so I know (incl value) so I trigger closure of Paypal.

Can I humbly suggest that anyone who wanted to donate and now can't sends an equivalent amount to the charity of their choice?

Why don't those who were going to donate but didn't make it in time, throw something at the British Legion or similar old soldiers fund instead?

Can you not keep the donation button open and just hand over the cash to the British Legion and Help for Heroes once the plauque has been installed.

No doubt the Club would like to unveil it properly, be nice to hand over the extra cash to whoever is doing the unveiling?

Some people may not agree with those charities for whatever reason.
Better to just suggest they contribute to whatever charity they either patronise anyway or just like. I'm sure Acorns wouldn't turn it down for instance.

Folks - sorry, if anyone wants to donate to British Legion/Help for Heroes/others,  please do so direct - not only do we suffer a paypal charge, but we wouldnt get gift aid on your original value, so it is best to donate direct to your particular cause.  Thanks again for all those who have donated and those who missed the cut off.

Disappointed to miss the cut off so a donation has been made to both the British Legion and help for Heroes. Well done to all concerned. It will be a fitting tribute and another reason to be proud of our great club.

Well done everybody for getting in so quickly and generously.

Well done to those who thought up the idea, and to those who made it happen.

Well done Villa for their support
