Villa's reserves will look to bounce back from consecutive defeats when they take on Everton at Hinckley tonight [ko 7pm].
Kevin MacDonald's men were unlucky to suffer a slender 1-0 loss against Wigan at the Robin Park Arena last Tuesday, following on from the defeat at Wolves a week earlier.
But the youthful claret and blues outfit gave a good account of themselves against the Latics, with teenage sensations Callum Robinson and Jordan Graham looking particularly impressive.
Arsenal's defeat at Newcastle last week means Villa have not lost any ground on their title rivals.
They remain five points behind the Gunners with two games in hand, meaning the destiny of the Southern Group championship is very much in their own hands.
Everton currently sit bottom of Northern Group B with eight points, although they have played less games than the other teams in their section.
The Toffees have suffered consecutive defeats to Blackburn, Sunderland and Manchester City.
With a number of stars out on loan - including Nathan Delfouneso, Barry Bannan, Jonathan Hogg and Shane Lowry - another youthful Villa side will take to the field.
Gary Gardner starts in midfield, having been in excellent form since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Habib Beye lines up in defence while there are reserve debuts for Richard Bryan and Spanish midfielder Juan Jose Serrano De La Cruz.

No Warnock? Being saved for the weekend maybe, with Clark and Young out?
-
Salifou is found!
Oh and a new chant - "There's only Juan Jose Serrano De La Cruz"

Not even the reserves want him nowadays.

What a great name, what is the deal with this player as i've never heard of him before?
-
Lost two-one. Sounded like we had a pretty young team out.
Incidentally, why are we playing a Reserve game two days before a Youth Cup semi? Bloody fix.
-
Not another goal in stoppage time? Tsk!

FT - Villa Reserves 1-2 Everton Reserves (Juan Serrano 34, Vellios 13, Gueye 90+3)

Even the bloody reserves are letting in late goals now.
-
It's The Villa Way.
-
It's catching, yes.
In fairness, the team was actually weakened tonight with the inclusions of Beye and Salifou rather than the impressive younger players like Weimann, Delfouneso, Bannan, Lichaj and the like who are out on loan and the youth players like Carruthers, Williams and the like who are most likely being saved for Wednesday.
-
Yes, it was very much a reserve reserve team.
-
He didn't think we could beat Everton.
-
Resting players in a league game to concentrate on the cups? That's not the way we do things round here!
-
Whatever happened to Omar Cummings?

When the final whistle went last night we had FOUR lads from u'16 on the pitch-
Salifou had decent first half but faded badly, Gary Gardner nearly scored with
an audacious overhead kick from edge of area and a thirty yard piledriver that
cleared the bar by barely an inch -
Good experience for some very young lads but KMac had face like thunder after
we conceded 93min winner -
Beye played the entire match, got booked for professional foul and fortunate not
to get marching orders when he lambasted the referee at final whistle -
Possibly wasted a last chance to close gap on Arsenal ..........3 defeats on bounce
now
-
Oh well. The last time we had our typical reserve side out we absolutely bollocked Arsenal 10-1.
So if they win the league, fair play to them. We have to think about the senior team and the youth tournaments and the reserves are kind of second fiddle to that and so the team gets broken up to suit.

I bet the late goal was from a fucking corner as well!
