Title: FA Youth Cup Semi-Final
Post by: Dan England on March 11, 2011, 11:39:37 PM
Seems we have a tie against Sheffield Utd after they beat Leicester City 2-1. Has anyone got anymore  info on when the game will occur? Pravda has no info at all and, in keeping with all things FA, their website makes no sense at all (Gives to dates next Sunday and two weeks Sunday with 19.00 kick offs). Quite fancy going along and showing support to the up and coming Villains!

Trying to work out from that link who we could play in the final. Looks like Liverpool v Man U decide tomorrow who plays Chelsea in the other s/f. But then Watfords name turns up too?

Hope we get Liverpool in the final....memories of 1972.

Just spoke to a Liverpool supporting mate who went to the Liverpool v Man Utd Youth Cup match this afternoon. Man Utd won 3-2, but -

Both sides had 2 players sent off each. With the game stopped a couple of times for fighting on the pitch.
Fighting off the pitch too - with about 10 arrests that he said he saw.
A flare thrown onto the pitch by the Man Utd fans.
He also said a lot of anti-Hillsborough and anti-Heysel songs being sang by the Man Utd fans that were there (about 300 he said).

Watched it on sky channel 434 and utds players showed awful
Dissent to the ref, ash will fit in like a dream if he goes there.

I watched this match on the box today (L'pool v Man Utd) and thought both sets of players were an embarrassment to their respective clubs.  Niggly tackles, badge kissing, arguing with the ref...an absolute shaming of the game at youth level.

Seems to me these two clubs desperately want to come across all "Rangers-Celtic" all of a sudden.

I hope Tony McAndrew hasn't taken the youngsters to Wacky Whorehouse for a bonding session ?

Good luck on wednesday lads.............don't believe we have any prima donnas in the squad, just
a good work ethic, from what I have witnessed on several saturday mornings at Bodymoor Heath

Daniel johnson looks a very goon player. Devine looks like a great boxer as he demonstrated to slew. They were the much better team and could head away all our high balls all week long.

Don't think any of our lads played to their potential tonight and will be disappointed
they let themselves down -

Tie not over yet, Blades didn't look anything special despite Tony McAndrew giving them
loads of praise pre-match -

Hoepfully the return leg will open up a bit more - could have been the occasion but
both sets of players looked nervous and frightened to make a telling pass or take
a chance-

Hopefully United will miss their boxer more then ours, Slew was arguably their best
player, whatever was Daniel Devine thinking, he completely lost it -

Villa finished with four wingers on the pitch but no natural goal scorer......... we will
play better in two weeks time but will it be enough to get us to the final ?

It was damn cold there tonight.

Thought we played ok in the first half but once United scored they had the upper hand.

Left a few minutes early and missed the sending offs.  grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Very cold night at VP tonight.
The better side won tonight. I thought Sheff boys were lot cuter on the ball  than ours. The CB McGuire just lapped everything up at the back. Danny Johnson looks a very good prospect however his long distance shots are worse than Ash's.
Not seen this crop of youngsters play before but I guess they can play better. Tonight they were not good but there is still the 2nd leg.

Freezing cold and I thought the game was terrible!

Only player to show any ability or passion was our captain Daniel Johnson who looks like he could be useful, at least he was trying to do something positive, the rest, purely on one viewing, were pretty mediocre! I am afraid we could still be playing that game at Christmas and still not score, it was that desperate!

Was indeed very, very cold (More grist to the coldest/dampest season of home games ever argument)

We started well and then Sheffield Utd grew in confidence, got their goal just before end of first half and we never really looked like getting level.

Johnson and the centre backs (Well till one of them joined fight club anyway) looked most promising for us.

Think Sheffield Utd's No. 10 will make a career for himself (He was their bod that got sent off) if only for his wanker gesture as he headed into the tunnel -  that is the mark of a premier leauge player, is it not? (To be fair I thought his movement during the game, was loads better than any of our players - maybe other than Johnson).

Very disappointing and not typical of this team. Still some of our better players missing for some reason and a couple have only just come into the team.
I think we'll win the tie though although now it's looking a bit trickier.

Sad isn't it. Even youth team kids now think this is the norm when it comes to behaving. I remember the Chelsea kid doing the same when he was sent off at Villa Park a couple of years ago.

He'll be an England regular before too long.

I listenening to most of the 2nd half on WM and that was their assessment.

Nice tippy tappy stuff with no cutting edge and it looked like Sheff Utd were playing within themselves

Wm reckoned that after 15 mins Sheff united had sussed that all of Villa's play came through Johnson so the snuffed him out and we ran out of ideas.

Never really in this match. Sheff Utd were much the smarter, quicker team all over the park.  They passed the ball better than us, moved around much better and generally bossed us.  In fact I do not think we had a shot on target all evening, typified when Carruthers got the penalty in injury time and decided to hit it with his instep leaning back at the same time, resulting in missing the crossbar by a good couple of yards.

Daniel Johnson didn't really get into the game, although they kept a tight watch on him.  Carruthers did some good work but much of the Villa play was too much one man stuff with a long ball up to two small front men who the No.5 of Sheffield had in his back pocket.

Derrick Williams looked ok at the back and Jordan Graham showed real potential when he came on, although when he hit a 40 yard pass from the left out to the right and expected the Villa player to be Usain Bolt to reach it as shown by his gesticulations was a bit OTT in my opinion.

Saw the Doncaster Rovers manager (forget his name) before the match, presumably looking to see if any of them were worth loan deals next year.  With the exception of the ones I have mentioned, and doubtful about those, I don't think he would have been too impressed by what he saw in Claret and Blue.

Yes, Perc.  She went as well, wasn't too impressed but felt sorry for the keeper when he got sent off!

Forgot to mention that, but the ref indicated with both arms across his chest "no foul" then looked at linesman who was indicating penalty so he gave it and sent our lad off.  It was up the other end of the field from where we were sat so couldn't see exactly what happened.

Also their captain got booked for taking his shirt off when he scored the penalty and then got sent off when he got involved in a bit of a scrap towards the end when tempers were getting a bit frayed.  Don't know if he will miss the final or just a league match, but if it is the final he will remember not to take his shirt off again!!

Disappointing display from our lads.

My assessment of the lads would go as follows:

Barrett -next to nothing to do. Very unlucky to be sent off.

Nelson-Addy -played out of position at right-back; looks a better midfield player.

Jenkins -played out of position; made a decent fist of it.

Williams -good player, strong in the air and likes to bring the ball out, though no Ciaran Clark.

Ciara -not much cop.

Robinson -nice touch and didn't look out of pace amongst older players.

Johnson -lovely, blaanced, two-footed player; faded afetr a good start.

Carruthers -good touch but a little slow off the mark.

Cameron -like Johnson faded after the opening half-hour.

Drennan -the new Luke Moore ie sulks when things aren't going his way.

Connor Taylor -the new Tommy Johnson; can't make up my mind whether he's a world-beater or rubbish; probably the latter.

Jordan Graham -Get that Premier shirt-number ready. Easily the best player on the pitch, just needs to learn how to cross the ball with some 'whip'.

Graeme Burke -nice le3ft foot and a good finisher; got a chance.

Any thoughts?

Yep DCDC agree with you on this.

Living "up north" only got to see them at Leeds and this match.  As I have said I was disappointed in both games at the level of ability throughout the team.  Apart from the odd ones already mentioned, I expected that the overall standard would be higher.  Was disappointed in the fact that Sheff Utd seemed much sharper in their passing and movement than us, one thing I thought that as PL juniors they would be good at.

Agreed about Jordan Graham, although only on the 45 minutes, he certainly stood out.  The thing that worried me was his hand signals and gestures to the others when they didn't get on the end of his passes, just hope it's not the first signs of "I am good, I am".
