Title: Cheltenham Festival 2011
Post by: andyaston on March 08, 2011, 03:58:08 PM
Ok, those who love a flutter or going to the races give your thoughts on these catergories:

1) Banker of the festival

2) Best bet of the festival

3) Lay of the festival

4) Best pub to drink in Cheltenham

5) Horse you'd like to win for sentimental reasons

No good with horses i couldn't back a winner if the race only had one horse in it.

Banker - Time for Rupert
Best Bet - Solwhit
Lay - Menorah

Just checked the odds, thought Menorah was shorter. He's carrying al ot of weight but i probably wont lay him, specially with it being on the first day.

I'll go away now and leave the H&V horse-torturing fans to it

Time for Ruppert is very well fancied at 9/4. Anyway heres mine.

1) Big Bucks, cant see anything stopping him in the World Hurdle.

2) Dunquib is 14/1 at the moment in the Champion Hurdle, thats if he goes in it. If he does, I know Binocular and Menorah are more likely to win it but, 14-1 for such a class horse looks tempting.

3) He let me down last year and with the going likely to be good i'm going to go against Masterminded.

4) The Lansdown, its close to the Station and hopefully like last year will have a Pork Roast on.

5) Kauto Star, I know age is catching up with him, at 11 it might be asking alot for the Gold Cup. If he did it the roar up the home straight would be amazing.

1. Quevega

2. As above, anything better than evens is like buying money!

3. Cue Card in the Supreme Novices, terrible race for favourites

4. Not exactly in Cheltenham but The Plough is probably the best for a pre race tipple

5. I won't be backing him but it would be fantastic for Denman to come back and win another Gold Cup

Title: Re: Cheltenham Festival 2011

1. Big Bucks, licence to print money even with Grands Crus running.
2. Midnight Chase each way in the Gold Cup
3. I fancy most of the short priced ones but perhaps Binocular in the Champion Hurdle which is wide open.
4. Any that have a pack of cards in to carry on the gambling after the racing has finished.
5. Big Bucks to win his third World Hurdle would be special.

It's going to be slightly different for me this year, as I've started working there in the last 6 months, so I'll be there every day but won't get chance to have a drink, should get to watch 3 or 4 races a day though.

I thought Solwhit had been withdrawn?

Banker has to be Big Bucks.

I was reading about a Twiston Davies horse at the weekend who's got a chance in the Albert Tatlock Novice hurdle on the friday, Sybarite, 16-1 at the moment, lump on!

Only £22 in the best mate stand, may trundle up for a few pints of the black stuff
Anyone know how far it is to stagger from station to racecourse ?
Title: Re: Cheltenham Festival 2011
Post by: Bosco81 on March 09, 2011, 11:38:13 AM
It's a good couple of miles from the station, they do put on double deckers to take you there and back, on the way there I always bail out half way as the traffic is murder.

It's a good laugh on the bus on the way home with everyone beered up, you might have to queue up for a bit to catch them.

Ah the Cheltenham Festival.

For me a day out like no other.  Such a great atmosphere.  It's also the 100th anniversary this year, making it extra special.

Love to see Kauto Star come back and win the gold cup.  Especially seen as I backed it at 12/1.

I have a fancy for Kempes in the Gold Cup, but would love to see the Tank make an unlikely comeback.
Like the look of Realt Dubh in the Arkle, lay Master Minded in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Watch it in the Best Mate, it's usually full of 'noses. I've only ever popped in there once and heard "Wipe that Snot" within five minutes. They do have tribute bands on though, bangin' 'em out all day.

Each of the last 5 years I've paid for a return ticket, only to have to get a taxi back to brum about 5am the next morning.

Doubtless i'll do the same this year.

No there about a fiver return. I walk it anyway because the town centre is only about a mile away from Cheltenham Spa so, it acts as a pit stop beore walking from the town to the course which is another mile and half away. The buses looked full and the nearer they get to Prestbury the more the traffic slows them.

I went in the Best Mate stand for the first time last year and thought it was brilliant. Good views of the finishing post, great atmosphere and easy to get served in the bars, even though it was packed. Same again this year.

Don't go in The Midland over the road from the station. Plastic pint pots, the beer is shite and the landlord cleans the pipes as often as his underpants.

Haven't really looked at Thursday's races. The big one is the World Hurdle and Big Bucks is aiming to make it 3 on the trot, if he gets any bigger than 11/8 wack half your budget on him and hope to enjoy the massive roar as he comes up the hill.

Just enjoy it as it is a great day out and like you i'm not a huge racing fan, it's not cheap but you'll meet loads of characters, always bet on the Irish horses because they love the gold cup week and do all they can to win a race.

This is exactly what I said when describing the day to someone the other day. I too am going on Friday. i have been the past two years and have managed two winners each time. Last year was brilliant. Nothing massive, but I managed to start the day with £130 in my wallet, had a breakfast in bham for £5, paid for my travel on a minibus with mates for £20, bought a round in the pub in Cheltenham for about £25, Ate a pork bap for something extortionate in the course and a small round for about £15 in the course. I came home with about £140 in my wallet!

Local media is saying that hotel bookings in 'Nam are down this year.

Based on my failed attempt to get to the local Sainsburys just now, I'd say that more people are staying out of town and driving in.

I'm two and a half miles from the race course and the queue for the horse-torturing stretches back past the end of my road.

Two seconds and a third, a modest start but better than the desperate times of the last two years. Got some dough back but my wager on Barry Geraghty to be top jockey looks a bit shakey although he was a touch unfortunate today.

Anyway, day two on the horizon and the fun continues, pub tomorrow and at the course for the final two days.

A mixture of happiness and frustration after yesterday.

Had a great day out and broke about even.  Bottled it a bit on Quevaga.  Was going to have 2 hundred on it but decided to be sensible and have 60 quid instead.  PRAT.

Time For Rupert today is a class above the field, big price at around 11/4.

Would like to see Master Minded win it again, but the ground may be a bit fast.  Woolcombe Folly a decent each way bet at 9/1

I got very lucky, I had put £10 on Quevega in the morning, then I tried to put another £40 on befair but I didn't think it had gone through, I ended up trying again, resulting in £90 going on instead of £50, which is the biggest bet I've ever had, I think I sweated more than the horse did.

Confirmed that Time For Rupert broke a blood vessel.  So probably shows the class and fight in the horse to finish 5th. (NOT THAT IT GETS ME ANY MONEY)

Backed First Lieutenant and Beshabar each way, so again broke around even.  I'm hoping Big Bucks will push me into the black considerably.

Big Bucks is a huge price at slightly over evens.  For me the best horse in training, with the perfect jockey on board.  I think Ruby Walsh rides Big Bucks better than any other of the top class horses he rides.

Grand Crus is hugely talented and his time will come.  I do not believe it will be this year though.  I'm of the opinion that Grand Crus needs a bit of give in the ground.

Other fancys today are Loosen My Load in the 1:30, and Gauvain at odds of around 14/1 in the Ryanair.

Big Bucks will make or break my festival punting wise though

Grands Crus is drifting a bit to 4/1 which is about right, Big Bucks is a worthy favourite.

I went a preview night last sunday and Tom Segal (Pricewise) tipped up Loosen my Load and Daryl Jacob liked Gauvain.

Big Bucks stunning again today.

Fair play to Grand Crus, who I thought ran a fantastic race and is a special animal in its own right.  Could be a Gold Cup horse in a year or two.

Big Bucks unreal though.  Could easily win another 2 or 3 of these as I can't see it going chasing.  Ruby Walsh faultless(well apart from dropping his whip).

As regards the Gold Cup, I'm not going to get too involved betting wise.  I would absolutely love it if Kauto Star comes back to win (had 20 quid at 12/1 after the King George aswell).  He's been a phenomonal horse and has given me a couple of great paydays.

I think if Imperial Commander comes back to top form he will win though.  Should be a fascinating race.

My first ever trip to this event yesterday.  I really enjoyed it.  Great weather, great atmosphere, great craic and it wasn't too packed.  I have never scrutinized details about horses before to such an extent and I don't know why I did as I hadn't a clue what I was looking for.  I opted to go with "expert opinions" for the first few races...no joy at all.  I then went for the more fruitful decision to put each way bets on jockeys in claret and blue.  The day gave me a loss of £70, I was expecting far worse.

I will go again next year.

Does that mean you bet on Buena Vista yesterday ?

Well if there is anything I've learnt this week it's that I know fuck all about Horse Racing.

32 horses picked this week - 2 winners.
