There are a lot of good shot stoppers in the premiership but not many that can command their area and can handle crosses around the six yard box. Out of Villa past. if possible who would you like in between thr sticks now? I will start off with Nigel Sims.
-
Spink
-
Ozzie Bozzie
-
At his peak - Schmichael
Over what they did during their career - Bosnich, Spink or James.
-
Bozzie at his best. Spink was terrible on crosses.
-
I can only really remember the tail end of Spinksy's career with us. Bozzie was outstanding, although his weakness was his kicking.
Out of the three I've picked above I think I'd go with James though.
-
Jimmy Rimmer every time
-
Jimmy Rimmer. Best all-round keeper we've had in my life, though he didn't have to face kicking the damn thing off the floor. Bosnich was a wonderful keeper but his kicking terrified me.
-
John Burridge by a mile.
-
Bosnich was great till ball went to feet, he was unlucky in so much as the back pass rule came into play during his tenure, but he was a superb shot stopper. Would have to vote Jimmy Rimmer overall though.
-
Bosnich just shades it ahead of rimmer for me.
-
Rimmer, Spink or Bosnich - all fine 'keepers.
-
I would go with Bosnich liked him between the sticks just hope we find a top notch keeper in the summer.
-
Jimmy Rimmer
-
I think it would be a toss between James and Bosnich for me. James was more prone to an error but was very good for his defenders.
-
James from about 3, 4 yeas ago. For a time in his Portsmouth days he was brilliant. For a non Villa connection it would have to be Schmichael.
Bloody hell, I must have removed him from my memory, I forgot he played for us!
I would pick him from his Utd days though not his time with us.
-
Has to be Bosnich - commanded the area, great shotstopper and good communicator with the defense.
-
Sam Hardy was good apparently.
-
Rimmer for week-in, week-out consistency.
-
Bosnich was probably the most talented, but prone to moments of madness, as well as a tendency to come charging out of his box and do a star jump in front of an attacker if there was a break on. As well as a complete inability to kick the ball.
Rimmer was less spectacular but more consistent, and less insane. Plus it would be amusing to see the faces of todays groundskeepers as he kicks up penalty areas when marking where his posts are. So Rimmer for me.
-
I'd go with Bozzie or James. The latter we should've kept and could still possibly do better than our current incumbent.
-
Rimmer, Bosnich, James or Spink... Jimmy just been bozzie for his kicking.
-
Jimmy Rimmer has been our best in my time, without a doubt. Spink wasn't as good as people seem to be remembering, although brilliant in Rotterdam I'm not so sure he ever became a top keeper.
Bozzie is the only keeper I can think of who left us for one of the tops sides, but he flopped at that level. Should have stayed here.
I also think in ten years time we'll look back on Friedal as being one of our better keepers as well.
When I started watching, and standing right behind the goal, I used to worship Colin Withers. I was too young to really appreciate whether he was any good or not (and in hindsight he probably wasnt too hot), but he used to pull off some spectacular saves. The sort of saves that really used to hurt when I tried in the road outside our house.
-
Aussie Bozzie please
-
Bosnich although his kicking was poor as mentioned. His display at Sunderland in the League Cup was dazzling amongst others and i particularly remember fantastic saves from Gavin Peacock of Chelsea and a Coventry forward (Moldovan?) in the FA Cup match they won at Villa Park.
Spinksy wasnt very good at coming off his line but a very good shot stopper.
David James arguably was the most consistent keeper we've had in recent years, the one big mistake he made however coming in the FA Cup Final.
-
Jimmy Rimmer for me every single time.
Spinksy was a great servant rather than a great goalkeeper and I can't have James or Bosnich as one couldn't catch a cross and the other couldn't kick a ball...
Schmeicel probably the biggest disappointment as probably the only goalkeeper signing I have ever genuinely got excited about!
-
Big Jim Cumbes for me and Bosnich for the thrills
-
Spink? One of the best shot-stoppers I've seen in net for the Villa, but was all at sea if he ever had to venture out of the six yard box.
Bosnich? Outstanding athlete and certainly the best shot-stopper I've seen. Penalty conceded? No problem, we've got Bozzie in goal. However, since a keeper's role nowadays depends on their ability to play the ball with his feet, his kicking was a liability.
James? Great all-rounder, but prone to catastrophic lapses in concentration. It takes something to lose two FA Cup finals for two different clubs through your inability to hold on to a cross.
So I'd go for Rimmer. Great command of his area and constantly keeping those in front of him in order. I can recall being quite far back on the Holte and hearing him bellowing at our defence from the Witton End goal. If you can organise your defenders, you don't have to be the greatest keeper.
-
Spink, for poking his tongue into his cheek
I remember Rimmer getting chipped on several occasions, coming too far off his line at inappropriate times
followed by Bosnich for his Adolph salute to the Spurs fans ;D
-
Colin Withers, Jimmy Rimmer, Jim Cumbes for me.
Before my time, but how about a mention for Nigel Sims ? (1957 and all that).
-
Big Jim Cumbes for me and Bosnich for the thrills
I can't think of Jim Cumbes without visions of Antwerp away flashing through my head. He never played for us again after that nightmare.
-
If you're in trouble he will save the day
He's brave and he's fearless come what may
Without him the Villa would go astray
He's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Rimmer
Without him life would be much grimmer
He's handsome, trim, and no-one slimmer
He will never need a zimmer
He's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Rimmer
More reliable than a garden trimmer
He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner
He's not bald, and his head doesn't glimmer
Master of the wit and the repartee
His command of penalty areas is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me!
He's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Rimmer
He's also a fantastic swimmer
And if you play your cards right
Then he just might come round for dinner
He's Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy Rimmer

That's brilliant. Without a shadow of doubt, I would pick Jimmy Rimmer.

Big Jim Cumbes for me and Bosnich for the thrills

Our first ever adventure into Europe and a great Villa following in Belgium, we were really excited and in the big time now ready to conquer Europe.
4-0 down by half time wasnt it ?
-
Spink for me
10 years of consistency
-
Les Sealey. Never a dull moment
-
Jimmy Rimmer for me just in front of Bosnich and Withers.
-
Throughout history we've, according to those who know, had very few world-class keepers, but a lot of very good ones. Sam Hardy, Nigel Sims and Jimmy Rimmer come into the former category.
-
Jimmy Rimmer for me just in front of Bosnich and Withers.
Colin Withers was my first goalkeeping hero, and it seemed to me that he and Slogger kept us in many of the earliest games I attended.
-
Bozzie is best goalkeeper I have seen for Villa apart from his feet. Victor Valdes of Barcelona remind me of him.
-
It would take a very harsh judge not to class Sam Hardy as "World class" in an era when only England and Scotland players could realistically use that tag. Our best ever goalkeeper in my opinion.
-
Friedel has to be up there for consistency. Best I have seen is Bosnich, excellent keeper, didn't matter that his kicking was so shite, gave us something to laugh at.
Spink was terrible on crosses, another great shot stopper though. I don't remember Rimmer being anything but solid....but I was too young to remember any finer details.
-
Colin Withers was my first goalkeeping hero, and it seemed to me that he and Slogger kept us in many of the earliest games I attended.
Both heroes of my youth, Withers is often wrongly overlooked when the topic of great goalies arises. Perhaps because we were firmly in the doldrums in the period when he played and as you say, the truth is we'd have been up shit creek without a paddle if it hadn't been for those two.
Was lucky enough to see Nigel Sims play and he was also a great goalie, as was Jimmy Rimmer of course.
-
Rimmer is the best keeper I've seen in a Villa shirt in over 40 years of watching Villa.
Nigel Spink is still my favourite Villa keeper though. His performance on 26/05/82 was something most of us can only dream about.
-
Spinky for me, 1982 was just the best performance especially under the circumstances and I know we rode our luck. Then as I worked my way up the Holte he was always there performing well, even in the darker years.
-
Rimmer ahead of Bossie for me with an honourable mention for Spinksy.
-
I`d say Bozzie if it wasnt for the way he dumped on us to go to Man U, so i`ll have to say Jimmy Rimmer, definitely Arsenals loss and our gain, pity he didnt stay on the pitch in Rotterdam, he deserved it so much, a total star.
-
Bozzie.
-
Bosnich for me, amazing keeper & great character too shame what happened to
His career.
-
Bozzie for his luck and Jimmy Rimmer for leadership
-
Bozzie
-
Bosnich. He could make saves that most keepers couldnt dream of. I was at a game in the mid 90s at West Ham,and he slipped kicking a back pass, was on his arse, but still reached out an arm and saved a shot from Lee Chapman. I was in the West Ham end at the time, and even they applauded it.
Shame how his careerened,as he had the tools to be the very best, even better than Schmeichal.
-
Yup Bosnich was fantastic.
-
Rimmer was a great keeper but for a while in the nineties I genuinely believe Bosnich was on his way to being the best in the world. When his problems came to light around 2002 I remembered a conversation I had in Tenerife in the mid nineties. I was wearing my Villa shirt and this guy who reckoned he'd owned clubs in Manchester for years told me our keeper had a little problem and had done since he was a youngster at United.
