Title: Manchester City v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Legion on February 27, 2011, 06:41:02 PM
Abandoning the predictable 2-0 Aston Villa win forecast did wonders on Saturday so:

2-3 Away win

Milner 10
Barry 30
Young (A.) 50
Agbonlahor 70
Pires 90

Win at all costs. Bribe their youth players to doctor food and drinks to give half the first team the squits, kidnap players. Anything!! We HAVE to win!

Sadly, we'll roll over and give them a comfortable 3-1 win.

I don't think we will roll over, we will give it a real good go I just think they will outplay us and outscore us unfortunately.

The referee for the game is Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear)

After failing to send off Rooney yesterday, we should hope for a much better showing this time around. The last Villa game he refereed was our convincing defeat to Arsenal at Villa Park, while Man City have won, lost and drawn in his 3 games in charge of them.

He will be assisted by Ceri Richards (yellow flag) and Simon Long (chequered). Jon Moss is 4th official.

Similar to Chelsea in the cup last season, we'll play well for 60 minutes, miss key chances and City will finish us off late on in the game.

Last time we played Man City in the FA cup we were taken to a replay at Eastlands courtesy of a last second Micah Richards header, (that was also 5th round if I remember correctly)  In the replay we got battered by a far from first team, with Samaras scoring 1 or 2 I think.

This worries me, especially being as that was then they were shit, but then again - that was when our strike partnership was Kevin Phillips and Milan Baros. My prediction is a jammy 1-0 win, with Richards having a goal disallowed for (an incorrect) offside; with Agbonlahor playing hero.

Yep, almost 5 years to the day. Citeh scored a last minute equaliser at VP, a Richards header from a corner (was it JLo Samuel who gave it away needlessly?) and afterwards he got rebuked by Garth Crooks for swearing during the post-match interview. We knew we were sunk then. A predictably timid performance in the replay up there (remember it was only 3 months since being hammered by Doncaster) led to much gnasing and wailing on here afterwards. Same as it ever was.
It would be nice to avenge that. It would be nice just to be in the last eight with a home tie to look forward to and a fighting chance of getting to the semi-finals.

Come on Villa, get a replay out of it at least.

I think it's hard to judge as I expect Mancini to switch things around a bit.  We'll be buoyant, and they won't be, so I think the first goal here is key.

Still I don't actually expect to win there, so I'd be happy enough if we can take it to a replay!

The thing is Man City are nowhere near the level of Barcelona or even Arsenal.  When they beat us at their place a couple of months back we were a club in disarray.  We're Aston Villa and we want FA CUP number eight.  We can beat anyone on the planet.  When Aston Villa are in the mood no one can match us.  If our name's on the Cup we will win!!

Never driven to Eastlands so anyone know what it is like for parking on matchday? Might go if I can get back from Bristol in time.

As for the game, they have been a bogey side for us for a while which is strange as we used to do well at Maine Rd when I was growing up. Hard game to call but think it is all down to how we start. If we don't go a goal down early I think we can win this.

If he doesn't send out his first choice XI we can get a result.  Didn't think I'd be saying that after our last visit at Christmas.

I'd love to win this more than anything, but this is one of their last two hopes for a trophy with the league gone, so they'll field a strong and very motivated side and I don't see us winning. I'd be surprised if it's anything like the capitulation of a couple of months ago, though.

Nice one, i'd love to see (David) Villa in an (Aston) Villa shirt just to see how cool he would look, no chance of it happening although we may sign him up in 10 years when his legs have gone and he is after one last big payday, just like Pires.

If all our fans turn up to the ground with bells and start ringing them , we can definitely confuse Tevez on the pitch.

Two of the most promising young midfielders in the country and one who's never played a full game for us. You must be incredibly perceptive to make such a snap judgement.

Rotation's working okay for us at the moment, but I'd keep NRC in for this one. He's our form central midfielder, with Makoun out, Petrov fading, Bradley untried, Delph just re-finding his feet and Bannan seemingly taking a break.

I'd go:

Friedel

Walker    Dunne    Clark     Baker (if fit, if not Collins at CB, Clark LB)

Albrighton NRC     Delph     Downing

                     Young

                     Agbonlahor

Subs: Guzan, L Young, Collins, Bradley, Petrov, Heskey, Pires

The tickets at Albion would have been £43 though, the tickets for us tomorrow are £23. I remember we played Man City in the cup a few years back, sunday night, 6pm kick off on itv and they brought 7000. The simple fact is for a club of our size and location our away numbers are shocking at times, there just isn't the same need to go to games as say Leeds or Newcastle fans, their fans simply have to go to away games and sell out everywhere, our fans seem far more pick and choose and don't mind not going. Every club of similar size to us would have took a lot more than 2500 to Man City tomorrow night and that away end is going to look very sparse on the tv.

So their 5th rnd cup game at Stoke 12 months ago is a fairer comparison then!

It won't only be the away end looking sparse tomorrow, I'll be surprised if they get too many more than 30k. They're on a run of five home games in 15 days, and that's expensive even for season ticket holders with all the other costs involved, when there's the option to watch live on ITV. A lot of people do put supporting their family before supporting their team.
They charged £15 for the previous two rounds, why put another 50% on the price just because we're a Premier League side?
Some people call it a good deal because premier league games can cost twice as much - I call it taking the piss.

That is absolute rubbish.  I remember that 5th round tie with City, the attendance was poor, about 24k IIRC but I am not sure about them bringing 7,000.  Our away support is tremendous, and amongst the best in the country.  Let's see how many of their wonderfully superior supporters turn up tomorrow then.

Can't see it - I thought he might have played against Blackburn but neither he or Beye are any where near the squad. Think they'll see out their time in the stiffs unless Ged sees a change in their attitude.  Wouldn't be surprised to see Delph there again - or he may bring Herd in and move Clark to left back.  Bit risky against the likes of Tevez, Dzeco and Balotelli though

We need to get the first goal to have a chance and it's going to take a big performance from the experienced lads on a par with the 1-0 win at the Villa.

In and around the stadium.  Never driven to Eastlands but been there on foot a few times (not from Brum obvously but from the station).  Keep your colours well hidden and don't leave anything Villa related in your car is my advice.

It is if you walk around wearing a Villa shirt and a big claret and blue hat, singing Villa songs, pissing on people's cars and wiping your arse with a City scarf whilst carrying a huge placard saying 'I love Man United' and burning an effigy of Carlos Tevez.

I think Collins is out,as is Baker,so it'll probably be Delph at lb. Least they have Johnson and Silva out.

Please let us keep it tight for the first half hour, don't give away anything sloppy, frustrate them and hopefully snatch something.

Delph's never played left back in his life, whatever your reservations on either of them, they at least can play in that position.
I know Houllier has fallen out with both of them, but you can't go from being in England's World Cup squad to being crap in one foul swoop.
It's just that I think if he plays there, clearly out of position, it will be our achilles heel in the biggest game of the season.

I think Beye has proved that he can't play in that position. Warnock's a different matter, but if he's so out of favour with GH,i cant see anyway back for him. Is Luke Young ready? He's usually pretty steady in that position.

You can if someone cannot clearly be arsed to perform the absolute minimum for the club that pays you. I do not want to see that petulant cnut anywhere near the first team.

Rather a committed Delph try his best there, if he gets ripped apart I'm sure GH will change things and offer him some sort of protection there.

I've heard L Young is on paternity leave but cannot confirm it.

Hmmmm. City are a bit light on width, with Johnson out, SWP rubbish/out of favour. I wonder if we, in our mini full-back crisis, could get away with this:

                                           Friedel

                      Walker           Dunne       Clark

                                           NRC
          Albrighton        Petrov           Delph      Downing

                                          Young

                                          Agbonlahor

Subs: Guzan, Warnock, Bradley, Bannan, Herd, Heskey, Delfouneso

Walker has played left back and is competent there if needed , I think if lichaj had been here he would have gone with him at right back but this is a tricky one , I was hoping luke would play but if not have we anyone in the reserves who could step up to the plate?

Lichaj was completly and utterly roasted up there a few months ago.  Even if he was here, I wouldn't have played him in this game.  Keep Delph there, he'll be ok.  he's athletic, can tackle and can pass, he'll do fine.

It looks like delph is the only option , he will be tested by them and I hope he avoids an early booking , city look like they are going to put out a very strong side so it's a good test of how far we have come- it's the cup and anything can happen in these one off cup games- let's hope the result goes our way.

Delph is not a left back, he wasn't tested once on Saturday.

I'd play Warnock, he is the best option in that position, we are paying him around 40k a week, so let's not blow a good chance of Wembley by being stubborn.

We seem to be eternally cursed in the full-back positions, don't we? We've actually got Warnock, Beye, Luke Young, Walker, Clark, Baker, Lichaj and Shane Lowry at the club, all of whom can play at left-back, and none of whom seem available to play there tonight for whatever reason.

Unbelievable!

3-5-2/5-3-2 was designed to counter 4-4-2, the idea being that two forwards would be man-marked in advanced situations with the sweeper in behind to pick up the pieces or late runners into the box. However, there is no chance whatsoever of Man City playing two strikers, and the problems 3-5-2 has against the lone striker systems are very well documented. For all City's perceived lack of width, they have players easily good enough and intelligent enough to adjust their positioning to double-up on a wing back, keeping him trapped in his own half for most of the game.

Nige could play right back and just sit deep and do a solid job, I think Ged would do that if Makoun was available. Maybe he will and will go with Bradley alongside Stan?

Personally, I wouldn't change it round too much, have Delph at left back and put Gabby infront of him to help him out. And just get Nige to play infront of the back four as he has the engine to cover either fullbacks defensive lapses. Not ideal but it isn't the worst idea I've ever heard.
Title: Re: Manchester City v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: eastie on March 02, 2011, 04:27:11 PM
Good point jj, nige has played right back in emergency and walker has played at both right and left back in his career , so could swap to the left if needed. At least we have that option as well as delph.

Indeed, I still have nightmares about that punt from Reina to Riera, Nigel's positioning being not so much suspect as tried and convicted.

Tonight, I would play a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1, with Delph at left-back (not only because Warnock would definitely be rubbish and Delph only might be, but also because Delph has the pace and athleticism to potentially account for the inevitable positional errors), with Petrov and NRC holding, Young in the free role etc. Predictable, perhaps, but it strikes me that our best chance against City will be Young and Gabby using their pace on the break (plus Ash's ability to run with the ball at speed must scare the shit out of opposition defenders). I would try Downing on the right and Albrighton on the left for much of the match, though, not only because they looked good there on the weekend, but also with losing Bent's superior finishing and movement, the 'inside-out' wingers might be able to cut inside and get more shots off to compensate.

1-1 draw last minute goal for them. We'll then beat em in the replay, win the cup, finish 7th with Sandwell and SHA relegated returning for a brief stint in 10 years time. Back to todays game!
We need a result tonight, the FA cup means so much to us all and would make this season one of the best ever following Villa. Well, if my above prediction comes through, it will be the best ever season

Makes sense. I put forward that 3-5-2 as a point for discussion as much as anything else and if we had another CB to put in the back three allowing Walker to play as a RWB I'd be tempted. But I do think in a situation like this, the less pulling players out of position, the better. As it stands, Delph at LB means only one player being used differently, and at least he had 45 mins or so there on Saturday. And Delph does have the attributes to cope there; and he won't really be facing a right-winger with pace, I don't think.

Petrov's days as a starter are numbered but I'd put him in for this one; we'll need his composure and experience at Eastlands.

I think is the sort of game where we don't have the luxury of accomodating Young, Downing and Supa MA on the pitch at the same time.  I would play only two of the three.  Maybe Downing + Young first half with Supa MA coming on second to run them ragged when they tire - 4-5-1 with Gabby up front.

Actually Young is possibly the hardest working player in the side, along with MA, and Gabby presses very well high up the pitch, so there could be an argument for playing all three BECAUSE we need to press the ball more.

Just shrugged the shoulders for this one when the draw was made "Ok, we're out. Might be for the best with our dire league position."

I've now gone from thinking we have no chance to thinking a win is unlikely, But this is the week for shocks: B-lose, Ireland - so maybe.

The amount of games they've had to face looks like it's catching up with them. Shame. I really couldn't care if we beat an understrength or half injured citeh side, anything that puts us through to the QF will be OK in my book.
