Title: Contracts For Downing & Young
Post by: madirishvillain on February 26, 2011, 12:55:48 AM
and move if need be mods (apologies in advance)

but i see in todays papers that we are going to offer Downing a long term contract as we "face up to losing Ashley Young"

im a bit, mmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhh to both of them

Downing has improved, which wasnt hard (improved as in he is scoring goals, his performances have been middling to poor still)

Ashley in my opinion is a waste of a shirt at the minute and has been for a while

would we miss either of them?

Like both of them. very glad that Downing is being offered a longer contract.  Think that the comment about Ash going is a kite being flown and it is up to Villa to make it clear to raiders that he is our player.  Last time I looked he was saying he was happy to be a Villa player.

hey madirish - you want to get rid of Downing and Ash?

Mad....definitely

Irish...well, I'm not going further because of ethnic issues - and family issues...because I still want to go on holiday this year to get together with the cousins and friends in the SW again...!

But seriously about the players.   WHY?  Every time I've watched the villa this season Downing and Ash have been our stand-out players.  I don't want them to go!  Either of them!

I realise that this might not be the reaction to your post that you were expecting.

not at all, its in the papers today

Young is going, is he not free in the summer, or only has a year to run - hasn't signed a deal yet

Downing, as i said scoring wise has done better this season

if they are our "stand out players" that probably explains why we are in a relegation battle?

i wish this season woud end now, so we can be safe

I must admit there is something that makes me agree with the notion that the best result for villa would be the season ending now! But then I think that we could win a few of the games coming up and end up in the top 6.  Looking at the totals it's possible!

As for where we are now, I still say that D&Y are superb players and that it is not solely down to them that we are only 2 places above the relegation zone. Everybody has had bad days at the office.  It's up to GH to 'go do that voodoo that he does so well...' to quote the song.

all this talk of ash moving on has been going on for ages, ash has said that he will sit down and discuss at the end of the seson not before, you know that i know that even my dad knows that and he aint been up the villa since the 70's

we are going to have it in the papers day after day week after week that he will be leaving but i'm sure the club will do everything they can too keep him and show him we have ambition

louzie ash hasnt been a "superb" player for a while now (if ever tbh)- in my opinion since MON called him world class against everton and THAT goal

the problem is ALL OF ASTON VILLA "has had bad days at the office" since August 2010

thats why if we got money for any of them i would take it

You would sell the entire squad?

good grief!

Madirish I had no idea....you're going for a radical re-model.  Total respect for vision.

When you get your millions+, who would you get in first?

well for a start Lou

think of the team we could build when we get millions for our "superb" players in ash and downing

who would you not sell?

obv bent, moukon and bradley are exempt....

go ahead then smarthole

why are bent, makoun and bradley exempt?

Seems to me we have a blank page. Given the posts up to this.

oooh!  who to choose....thinking thinking thinking

well

I think I'd go for Ashley Young.  And then, Stuart Downing.
And we might need Emile Heskey (cos I like him) and and and ....a goalkeeper would be good...and...

why not all the players that we have who are (goodness knows) terrifically good?

I don't share your pessimism but I will defend to the death your right to have it.

Ooops - perhaps wrong constitution...

Downing has been OK this season. Nothing more. He is a winger that can't cross the ball which is always a bit annoying. Plus when he's bad he's infuriating to watch.

Young is a class act but has been totally ineffective all season due to being played out of position. Why neither KMac, Houllier or seemingly Young himself have seen this I really don't know.

Keep them both BUT PLAY ASHLEY ON THE LEFT

Perfectly reasonable thread to start, but some sort of useful title as to what the thread is about would be a good idea

Both very good players that I hope we keep. We have to put a stop to losing a top player every summer, it gives the impression that we are a selling club and isn't a good message to send to the rest of the squad.

It always makes me laugh when I read from those who reckon Ash isn't that good advocating that we sell him to Manu. In effect the poster is suggesting that they're a better judge of a player than Ferguson.

Ash - Goodbye

Downing - Keep

i would get rid of both for the right money and replace.... matt jarvis for example could easily replace both... and im sure with our fancy new scouting that we could attract someone with real potential...

downing has improved, but that wouldnt be hard considering how poor he was last year, but he is still enfuriating with his powerpuff girl tackling... and when he is off form, he is pretty much pointless...

as for young, i am sick to death of seeing him fall over and complain at the referee... and that is pretty much his game these days no matter where he plays... for the position he is being shoehorned into to try and placate his ego, we could replace him wth consummate ease... i personally think that we already have a player better suited to that particular position he is being wasted in, with delfouneso or delph...

Downing has been our player of the season so far, he has been the most consistent throughout the season.

I have a feeling next season Clark will be first choice CB and Albrighton will be first choice right winger with Downing moving to the left, his best position.

AGree shrek, downing has been our best player this season in my opinion and I see him and albrighton as our wide players next season, and agree that Clark will be our centre back, on young I feel sadly that he will move to newer pastures and would not be at all surprised if man utd were interested in him .

Sadly i think he would fit in great at Man U because of his energy, he could rotate with giggs on the left or play behind Rooney in the big games.

But i still have hope he might sign!

I really do think Downing gets a hard ride with a lot of our fans. For me, he was superb y-day. I think people only look at him when he f*cks up but don't see what he does. Yes, he can't takle but that's not his job. As for Ash he was back to his best yesterday, just got to keep it going.

If Young moves on, then I'd try to get in N'zogbia or jarvis and I wouldn't be adverse to playing Downing centrally for a bit.

He has a decent short and uses the ball intelligently.

Even yesterday having his best game of the season, Young's throughballs were still on the whole frustratingly overhit (although Bent easily had his worst game for us).

I believe that Ash is by far our best player and that Downing, in general, is a very good footballer.  I can't believe two things:

1.  That anybody could even contemplate wanting Ash to go, he is as i have said, as good as anything we had at VP in a long time and will be very, very hard to replace.

2.  That anybody could actually believe that he is staying.  He is blatantly off in the summer and we will have to move on, there is no way on Earth that Ashley Young will be a Villa player in August.  It is as inevitable as Barry and Milner's departures.  In fact, probably even more so.

As for Downing, I believe he will stay and thank goodness for that, he is probably our 2nd best player imo.  I know that some people will disagree with this as he has his detractors but his contribution to the team is there for all to see.

The Independent:

Downing's dazzling switch stakes England claim
Aston Villa 4 Blackburn 1

By Ciaran Cronin at Villa Park
Spring is in the air at Villa Park. After a winter of discontent, where Gérrard Houllier's side have toiled unconvincingly around the Premier League's nether regions, the optimism that followed Saturday's 4-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers was easy to detect.

Were it not for Keith Andrews' appalling error in giving away the 49th-minute penalty converted by Ashley Young, this might have gone ended up being yet another unsatisfactory afternoon for the home side. But once freed from pressure of breaking down the limited if well-organised visitors, Villa put on a show that offered an enticing hint of just what they might be capable of with the burden of relegation lifted from their shoulders.

Marc Albrighton, stationed on the left flank in that second half, was a continuous menace. Ashley Young, in the hole, was direct and purposeful in everything he did, a point exemplified by both his dispossessing of Andrews to earn the penalty and the prolificacy of his finish for Villa's fourth. Darren Bent made intelligent runs to stretch the Blackburn defence and leave gaps for others. The most impressive of Villa's English performers in front of the watching Fabio Capello, however, was Stewart Downing.

"Stewart is outstanding, he has improved a lot," said Houllier of a performance from the winger that was considered and flamboyant at precisely the right times. "He's more confident, he can pass, he can score. His goal was fantastic. He can make runs sometimes to cover, sometimes to fill in, and his technique is good, his awareness is good. Stewart can be on either side, right or left. He's one of the rare players who can use his both feet."

Houllier believes Downing should be in England's squad for the European Championship qualifier against Wales in Cardiff at the end of March and given that England's perennial left-sided midfield issue refuses to be solved Capello might agree. It won't have escaped his attention that Downing was immeasurably more dangerous against Blackburn cutting in from the right-flank in the second half than he was stationed on the left in the first. But still, talented left-footed English players remain a rare species.

As for Blackburn, they can only ponder what might have been had Jermaine Jones beaten Brad Friedel in the second half with the score at 0-0. This was their fourth league defeat in six games, a result that puts them in the middle of a battle against relegation.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/downings-dazzling-switch-stakes-england-claim-2227477.html#

I just do not understand the doubts that some have regarding Downing. Even when he is not performing that great he is still likely to score or set up goals. During any season he will contribute enough goals and assists to be well worth his place. He does defend and track back, but no, he does tend to go in for crunching tackles but thats not the player he is. I think its vital we keep Stewart and if he gets a long term deal at the end of this season then great.

HAve a feeling that Ash likes to be the big fish. I doubt that would happen if he left at the moment so i wouldn't be at all surprised to see him stick around, and be the focal point of the team. If he plays like he did on Saturday then he can have what he likes. Captains armbands, higher wages, play anywhere on the pitch. just try and put the penalty to the other side every now and then as he is very telegraphed.
