Title: Scorers of Great Villa Goals
Post by: DeKuip on February 15, 2011, 11:48:08 PM
Whose Villa goals have you enjoyed the most - simply because of the quailty of the goals.

So it needn't be a striker, or even someone who got loads, or even someone who scored particularly important goals.

My shortlist from 40-odd years of watching would be:
ANDY GRAY - scored the best headed goals I've ever seen, and plenty of decent ones with his feet too. He seemed to get so many classic goals, often through not being afraid to put his head where it might get clobbered.
DAVID PLATT - had the knack of perfectly timing runs into the box and just didn't score bad goals.
JUAN PABLO ANGEL - some of his finishes, whether headers or shots, were of the highest quality. I just wish he'd played at a time when we had a better team.
BRUCE RIOCH / TOMMY HITZLSPERGER - I can't seperate these two. Clearly Rioch was a better all round player but did "The Hammer" ever score an average goal? Two of the few players we've had who could hit a rocket shot and get it on target.

My shortlist is getting longer in my head as I write, but I'll let the rest of you have a go now.

In my years its gotta be Hitzlsperger, although Staunton and Alan Wright get a mention too

Brian Little scored some breathtaking goals and could even make a tap in look like goal of the season. Chico Hamilton knocked in a few blinders too from around that time. Benny Carbone springs to mind in latter years

Believe it or not, Dalian Atkinson- not just that goal against Wimbledon.  Just look back at the 90s video's and he scored quite a few belters.

He had a spell in 92 when he scored nearly 3 goal of the months in a row,a couple at Sheff Wed spring to mind.

Bruce Rioch - once I was directly behind him when he hit one from out right into the top corner. Exocet doesn't do it justice.

Andy Gray for me

Watching that team of 76/77 of Little, Graydon, carrodus and gray was the most exciting team I've watched at VP

We had our own goal of the season competition at Tottenham in the late 90s when we won 4-2. Dion, Alan Wright and someone else all scored great goals. The passing goal scored by(Yorke? Saunders?) at home against I think Sheff Wed when we passed them to death.

Oh, and then there was Ash...Lee???????

Deanos against Ipswich at VP. Here at No.2>>

Dalians run and goal at Selhurst Park against Wimbledon. As above link, at No.1 of course.
Chris Nicholls belter at Old Trafford against Everton in the LC final.

Mersons at Goodison Park 2000.

Petrov 50(?) yarder at Derby.

Carbone in the cup against Leeds.
&feature=related
Savo in the cup final at Wembley.

Brian Little run and acute angle in the 75 Old trafford final.

Andy Lochhhead header in the 70/71 semi at VP against Man U. (And if anybody finds footage of that I will pay them to see it again)

Did Andy Townsend ever score a bad Villa goal?
My favourite was his free kick against Chelsea in 97/98

He scored a great one at Portman Road too.

Tony Daley was the first name I thought of, a couple v Everton (home and away), that run v Luton.

Practically all of Hendrie's goals were pearlers , even his most hardened critics (Chico, Leighton, Deej) would have to agree.

How many of you remember a Welsh player called Barry Hole who,  before being up and down and in the Rose and Crown and shot and missed and always fucking pissed,  scored a few crackers.

Steve Staunton's were usually all crackers. Alan Wright never scored a duff looking goal either.

Petrov's goal against Derby, hit it on the half volley cut across it with his supposedly weaker foot & bent it into the top corner from  45-50 yards out.

I'm happy to say I was there, there were a few moments of stunned silence before we realised it had actually gone in.

Had Beckham scored that it would have been on telly ad infinitum/ ad nauseum

Tony Morley run from the edge of his box in East Germany in our european cup run, goal at Everton the same season.

Brian Little goal v Man City in league cup 76/77, overhead kick.

Atkinson goal v Wimbeldon was excellent

August 1995, Villa Park, scorching sunshine. Manchester United the visitors and already one nil down. Alan Wright disposses Phil Neville with an excellent slide tackle and then slips the ball to Mark Draper. Draper touches it on to Yorke who sets off on a long run up to the edge of the penalty box. He gives it to Milosevic who nutmegs a challenge and passes it to Draper who has made the run from deep inside his own half. Terrific placed shot, 2-0 Villa. One of the best Villa moves ever.

From when I starting watching  at VP:
Bruce Rioch when he hit them they stayed hit. There was no swerve no bend  just straight. Getting a free kick in around the  pen box was as good as a penalty to us.
Andy Gray for shear domination in the air.
Brian Little's cut in from left or right.
and of late that combination of Laursen and Ash , in that purple patch Ash had in 2008,  when we  had a free kick on left you could almost see a goal  and it usually did.

Many many others but this will do.

Harry Burrows ,Bruce Rioch  and Der hammer for shooting. For heading it would have to be Tony Hateley, Dion Dublin and Andy Gray. For skilful goals it would be Paul Merson and Brian Little. For the luckiest goal i have to go for Bouma against the barcodes

Dwight Yorke for me

invented the lazy / arrogant penalty kick and his goal against Forest 91/92 is still one that gets the rewind button treatment

Garry Parker also scored some corkers
